Built into a hill, made of the earth. The truest Hobbit Hole you will ever find. Less than 2.5 hrs from Toronto and in the heart of cottage country. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. Enjoy total privacy and serenity. No sirens, no traffic noises, no construction, no people. But there will be bugs. The Hobbit Hole is in a field on a farm. Please do not expect a "Hilton Experience". Expect more of a glorified tent with amenities. Outhouse is onsite. Completely off-the-grid solar power provides minimal electricity for lighting and phone charging. Propane stove (Please bring your own propane, as we have a local shortage in stores) cooking supplies and crockery available. A spring-fed swimming hole is steps away. The queen-sized bed has a mattress with a protective mattress cover and there is a camping cot that sleeps one. Please bring your own bedding (linens/blankets/sleeping bags/pillows.) The Hobbit Hole only sleeps 3 but if you visit Hillside Stables Wildness Retreat on HipCamp, Campsite #1 is reserved for overflow from the Hobbit Hole at $50/night. Pitch a tent and enjoy all the amenities as your friends staying in the Hobbit Hole.
Hobbit Hole is open all year and ozonated after each stay to kill germs and odors.
Please bring your own firewood or order a bundle from us at the time of booking.
Please keep a close eye on your children. This is a working farm and children need to be supervised at all times. This is a very big property with many animals. If you are scared of horses or dogs it's likely not the spot for you.
The Hobbit Hole was constructed by Hugh Moreshead. The carvings were done by Bill Hastie.
If you bring pets, please keep them on a leash. We are not responsible for what happens to your animals.
We ask that guest please arrive before it gets dark, otherwise it is extremely difficult to show you what you need to see.

Peace and quiet
Our stay at the Hobbit House was fantastic, very quiet and peaceful, the weather was great, although chilly at night, but the wood stove supplied ample heat, and never had to check fire for 4-6 hours , just need to get it blazing and then shutdown the dampers on the STOVE DOOR leaving damper in the chimney pipe wide open
Such a cozy space and the two of us and the dog loved it, the dog slept for almost two days, he was exhausted from all the hiking through the grounds, just had to watch him around the mounds of jewels the horses left, as he seemed to think he should roll around in them LOL
Our entire experience was great from start to finish! The host was very welcoming and even had both the fire pit and wood burning fire inside the Hobbit Hole started for us for our arrival (this was a nice touch). There were ample items on site such as cooking utensils, plates/bowls, cutlery, cutting board, propane stove & propane BBQ (bring your own 1lb propane tank), kettle, ax (this was very dull so you may want to bring your own or a sharpening kit), water jug, shower bag and more for our use! It made our stay even more cozy to enjoy the hobbit hole creation and surrounding environment. If you love animals, you may even get an opportunity to be visited by their 4 horses, 2 donkeys and 2 dogs! All of the animals are very friendly and we especially loved the donkeys (Jethro & Eeyore). The area is picturesque with small rolling hills and some paths to wander around the property!
Hobbiton without leaving ontario!
My partner and I stayed at the Hobbit Hole for two nights and had a wonderful experience. Right off the hop, Rebecca was welcoming host and was gracious when we arrived late. She made sure to show us everything and go over everything we might need. The Hobbit Hole was well stocked and had more supplies than I expected, which was a bonus for us! As well, the place was tidy and well organized as to where everything was. We opted to get the 1/2 dozen fresh eggs as an add on and they were delicious! Overall, we very much enjoyed the quiet and being tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, plus we made friends withe Maggie and Lola (the farm's puggles) and Chloe (another farm dog) during our stay.
As a first time camper, I was a tad nervous but there's enough supplies and amenities at the Hobbit Hole that made it a great first time camping experience for my partner and I. Just some things to note for any future guests: 1) we arrived after a couple of days of rain and the path to the Hobbit Hole might be tricky in a small car. 2) There are plenty of cooking utensils for you to use, but there wasn't a pair of tongs (it looked like they had been broken by a previous guest) so you may want to bring your own if you plan to cook anything where tongs may be useful.
We had a great experince at the Hobbit Hole and would definitely recommend it!
September 10, hobbit house
We absolutely loved our time at the Hobbit House. Thank you for sharing your masterpiece and creativity. We enjoyed meeting the animals and experiencing this once in a lifetime memory. So many fun memories have been made here and we greatly appreciate your role in that. Our Middle Earth adventure was a success. If you are debating whether or not to visit, just do it, it is well worth it.
A few notes to make before you go on your journey; the hobbit house is situated on a large open land about a five minute walk from your host's house. There is an outhouse on the premise. It gets very dark at night, so I highly recommend bringing some extra lights (the hobbit house include candles and electricity). Lastly, enjoy your time. :)
We booked the place for one night but we weren't able to stay. The place was not clean at all. The bed had dirt all over it, inside the house smelled bad and you cant even open the windows to let the air out. The host warned us about ticks being an issue but she hadn't done anything to minimize the risk of coming in contact with them. The grass was not cut so ticks could easily get on us. The dogs that would come by for a visit looked like they had ticks and they would come so close to us. We didn't even spend a whole hour there. We kindly explained and asked for half the money back, since we had commuted a long way to get there and basically had no choice but to rent a room for the night. She seemed very understanding and offered a partial refund but never actually went through with it. I emailed her a couple of times to follow up, thr first time she replied that she will refund the money in a day but we never received any money back so I emailed her a second time and she just ignored it and never refunded us any money back.
This was my first time staying at a site on Hip Camp. I typically travel outdoors by canoe so our stay at the Hobbit Hole felt like I was at a 5 star resort. Rebecca was a phone call away any time we needed more water or help with anything. Her partner stopped by and chatted with us while we were having a swim (Yes the water really is that blue!) and they are both very gracious hosts. Their property is huge and I think we only explored a fraction of it. We visited the orchard to collect apples to feed the donkeys that roam the property. In their barn they have a really fun medieval themed pub. The hobbit hole itself was incredible. Lots of fun Tolkien themed items around and a beautiful raised queen sized bed. We had brought our own dishware and cutlery but that was provided for us, so no need if you are wondering what to bring. The starts at night were incredible, we were lucky enough to arrive on a full moon and I don't think I've seen so many stars in quite a while. Overall it was a great experience and we might just make it an annual trip! Thanks so much Rebecca, our stay was amazing!
