Nestle your tent at the edge of a gentle stream among groves of walnut, poplar and cherry trees or select a site at the top of one of the many rolling hills, overlooking neighboring farms. Backwoods Adventure Camping offers a several primitive campsites throughout the 240 acre McKee Farm. Each of the six campsites offer a quiet escape into nature's splendor on rural Ohio farm. There are hiking trails through the woods and wide open hay fields to explore. Guests can hike with views of horses, cows, wildlife, corn fields, large boulders, and rustic barns. The dirt roads provide great places to drive ATVs and four-wheelers.

Four wheel drive vehicles are helpful on the back country roads and useful to getting closer to our more primitive campsites - however there is a parking lot for those who don't have 4WD and some sites are more easily accessed. There is a composting outhouse for our guests, and our campsites have picnic tables, fire rings, garbage cans, and a shovel. Running, potable water is available at the white barn which is central to the farm. Two of our sites are hike in sites.

Firewood is available for $5.00 a bundle and is delivered directly to your campsite. You can pre-pay for it through HipCamp or pay cash upon arrival.

The roads leading to McKee Farm are dirt roads and offer beautiful view of our neighboring farms. There are small Amish businesses throughout the area and don't be surprised to see a horse and buggy drive past the farm. Nearby Black Hand Gorge is another wonderful place to explore with hiking trails, great views, and a super cool old railroad tunnel. About twenty minutes away is a horse farm which allows riding (reservations must be made to ride). Dillon Dam is also about twenty minutes away and offers more beautiful wooded trails and a lake for swimming or boating.

Fresh coffee and baked goods can be ordered and delivered to your site. Ask us for information and to find out what's baking each day!

CAMPSITES:

Site 1 - Winding Woods Creek Trail Camp: This site is our most primitive site and is located in the midst of a beautiful beech tree forest. Campers can park either on the gravel parking area right off the road or may drive off road to the entrance of the Winding Woods Creek Trail. The trail is a short hike through the woods and leads to a quiet site with a picnic table, fire ring, garbage can, and shovel. There are plenty of places to pitch a tent or to hang hammocks. The campsite takes an offshoot of the Winding Woods Creek Trail, but if you continue onto the trail, you can explore the creek and woods.

Site 2 - Edge of the Woods Site: This site is easily accessed from the parking area off the road, and offers a table, fire ring, shovel, and garbage can. The site is nestled at the edge of the woods and overlooks a hay field. There are plenty of places to hang hammocks, and a few places flat enough for tents.

Site 3 - Sunset View: This site is easily accessed by vehicle. It is situated at one of the highest points on the farm not far from the corn cribs. It overlooks the barn and hills beyond, and offers amazing sunset views. Guests can walk along the ridge, overlooking the farm, or walk down into the woods to explore. It is within walking distance to the outhouse. There are no trees directly at this site. There is a large picnic table, fire ring, shovel, and a garbage can.

Site 4 - One Tree Hill: There are more trees than one on One Tree Hill, but this site is nestled beside the oldest tree on the far back of the farm. It's a large oak tree on the furthest corner of the farm bordering two other farms. The site can be driven to, although you will be off-roading it through a wide open pasture. There are both woods and pastures to explore near the site and plenty of privacy. There is a table, fire ring, garbage can, and shovel for your use.

Site 5 - Little Site in the Big Woods: This site is easily accessed by vehicles and can be driven right up to. It is nestled right inside the woods surrounded by beech trees, oak trees, and maples. Beyond the site are huge rocks an boulders, and if you're lucky, you'll stumble upon a bird's nest hidden among the rocks. It also provides a view of our horses and one of our wooden barns. There is a picnic table, garbage can, shovel, and fire ring provided for your use.

Site 6 - Top of the World:  This is an open site (no trees for hammocking) on the top of a hill overlooking a neighboring Amish farm and surrounded by crop fields. There is flat room for several tents. If you peak through the woods, you can see Tullihas in the Trees, McKee Farm's very own treehouse. (Also available through HipCamp). Great sunset views and views of the countryside on this north west facing hill make Top of the World a beautiful site. The site is very private, but can be accessed by vehicles (once again, off-roading it a bit). There is a fire ring, shovel, and a garbage can

Site 7 - Waterfall in the Woods: This site is a hike-in site. It is located in the woods near a steep valley where there is a waterfall certain times of the year. It's a quiet, isolated site. Campers must pack out their trash. Fires are limited to the fire ring provided. There are lovely trees and places for tents. This site is not close to the outhouse and is truly a rustic site intended for backpacking in. Guests may still access the water and outhouse at the barn - but it's a hike.

Backwoods Adventure Camping is situated on a beautiful farm in rural Ohio. While it was cold during my stay (Ohio is like that in April) I really enjoyed it! There were horses grazing nearby, beautiful woods to hike and explore, and scenic views of farmland and forests.

Beautiful and vast forests to hike and explore. tent people dogHorses were grazing in a nearby pasture as we set up camp. They were lovely! hiking activity

This place was amazing. The perfect place to relax and unwind. The camp site I was at was everything I wanted! I took a nice hike through the woods where I saw deer, chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and even a horse who was near my campsite! (But was within its fence and very nice and very approachable!) It was the peaceful getaway I needed! If you are ever in the heart of the mid eastern state of Ohio you gotta find this place and set up camp!

Autumn and her family were super friendly and accommodating. Her dad showed us all the campsites, let us take our pick for the night. He brought us a map of the farm and even brought us extra firewood. The stargazing was amazing, can’t wait to go back!

Autumn and her family were very open and inviting. They gave us a map of their property and even gave us a tour! They made sure we had everything we needed and let us know they were there in case we needed anything. It is a very beautiful and peaceful farm and we will be back, we have been twice already.

The land was great and we had an excellent camping adventure. The perfect first camping getaway for my 5 year old daughter. We were able to camp in the woods on our own without being surrounded by lots of other tents or RVs - none at all! - and we had so much fun exploring the woods, the hillside, and watching the sunset. I’m pretty sure we’ll be back again. Autumn was a great host and made sure we found our site, knew how to use the composting toilet, and helped us scope out the flattest spot for our tent. She even provided a great map to help us find different places to see. Definitely would recommend.
