Welcome, hammock campers! We are easily one of the closest, and cheapest, camping options when it comes to staying in Asheville. Only 8-12 minutes by car from downtown Asheville, we are a friendly, family-run outfit. The camping spots are in a small, private, green valley, and you’ll feel like you’re "out in the sticks" even though you're actually super close to all the breweries and parks that make Asheville what it is. This site accommodates up to two hammocks - bring your own! :) Tent camping in this spot is also totally fine.

The Baying Hound Campground is where rural Appalachia meets “keep Asheville weird.” You’ll see sleeping pods decorated by professional artists, structures made from upcycled building materials and permaculture experiments in the making. Not quite glamping and definitely not KOA, we're happy to offer you an alternative to cookie-cutter lodging without breaking the bank.

If you happen to be interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we own and operate a gym on the premises. You'd be able to attend all classes free of charge during your stay!

Amenities: Communal fire pit, picnic tables, sink with cold running water, outhouse, outdoor solar shower, indoor bathroom with sink/toilet (no indoor shower), hangout spots

Full disclosure: there is a farm directly up the hill from us that can occasionally waft unpleasant animal smells (usually when they clean out their pens). No matter how often we tell them, the animals refuse to respect our quiet hours, so you might hear them at night. There is sometimes some noisy traffic in the neighborhood during the day.

Frequently asked question: "Can I sleep in my vehicle?" Yes! The parking area is separate from the camping sites, so you won't be able to pull right up to the spot. Plenty of folks do choose to sleep in their vehicles. The parking area is on a private road shared with elderly neighbors and other campers.

**Between NOVEMBER and MARCH, we can NOT GUARANTEE ACCESS TO SOLAR SHOWER due to winter weather. While we still allow winter reservations, please be aware that conditions are on the more primitive side of "primitive camping."**

(Another) Full disclosure:Our neighbor up the hill from us has Confederate flags displayed on his property. We understand the hurtful, disrespectful and ignorant nature of these symbols and really really wish they weren't there. The message they send is the exact opposite of everything we believe - tolerance, love, inclusion, equality - however, there isn't a whole lot we can do about it besides give y'all a heads up and let you know that ALL are welcome here at our campground and differences in race, color, religion, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, and political belief/affiliation are things to be celebrated. Rest assured, the neighbor poses no risk whatsoever - he is an elderly man who has trouble moving around.

Very cool camping spot. A lot of thought went into making a unique space with cool art and creative shelters. These are true camping spots though fresh water and parking are provided and convenient.

The spot is remote in a great way while still being very close to Asheville (10 min drive) and all it has to offer.

Highly recommend. This is the most unique place I have ever stayed. It really provides that Asheville vibe and I will definitely be back. I really enjoyed the curiosity trail too.

Really nice unique campground, with local artisan built structures. As of this listing not all of the sites are listed on HipCamp which is too bad because I would have rented one of the larger structures if I knew they were available. A little hard to find but remember to FOLLOW THE STARS past the ju jitsu studio and up the hill to the parking.

Cute little campsite but sites are sorta close together. My brother and I enjoyed the vibe and the people. We spent a good amount of time walking around and taking it all in and taking ideas if I ever decide to build a tree house or use old truck parts for a roof. Great ideas!

I wanna know more about the story of the neighbor. Is he a guy who bought country land hoping to get some quiet and now has a neighbor with random people wandering around at all hours of the night? A fascinating place indeed. This is my second stay and I'll likely be back if I'm in the Asheville area when the state and federal campsites are full.
