I have two full hook up RV Sites at the Dark Ridge Hide Out, the one currently featured has my coach on it for reference, the other is in the corner past the Montana fifth wheel. Photos will be updated soon. It is part of a 20 acre parcel in the Blue Ridge Mountain's on the back side of the Beech Mt Ski Resort in a secluded quiet and safe community with less than a dozen homes in a one mile radius. Away from light and sound pollution. Except for an occasional passing vehicle "and often none at all from 10pm to 6am" all you will hear is the sound of the creek which runs by the site, cricket's and frogs at the nearby fish pond and only the light from the moon and star's in the clear mountain sky and fire flies. It is my home place with a tobacco barn and a big cattle/tobacco barn where I grew up and my parent's made their living farming. The section of Elk River with the Compression Falls "45 ft high" and Twisting Falls which is part of Pisgah National Forest is less than two miles from here, and an old logging road going around the mountain above the river for about three miles to another Falls "Elk River Falls, 65 ft high" is a great place to hike or mountain bike. You will be free to explore and hike any part of my property except the house and out building's. The pond's are full of Trout and Blue Gill fish that are like pet's they love little pieces of bread. You can feed the fish but no fishing.

Great getaway in the mountains
I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away from it all and enjoy some time in the mountains. Curtis has a great set up on his property with both tent and RV camping. We were in RV site one and it was a great set up right by the creek. The site is set up as a pull in site for a motor home, but we had no problem getting our 42’ fifth wheel pulled in, detached from the truck, and set up.
Curtis is a great host! He is around the property and willing to answer any questions you may have. He met us when we arrived and gave us a run down of the area including areas to hike and where the best sunset is.
One warning when visiting is that the area is very mountainous and you need to really pay attention to the route you take. If you come through Boone on 321 make sure your GPS does not take you up Russell Norris RD. Make sure you stick to Buckeye Rd. Buckeye is still challenging with a large 5th wheel, but Russell Norris is nearly impossible. I still don’t know how we made it through there.
We will definitely return to Curtis’s place in the future.
One of my favorite camping trips!!
This was one of the best camping trips we’ve had. We absolutely loved the campsite that was right on the creek. It was nice listening to the water while we were in our camper as well. We really enjoyed our host Curtis. He was a very friendly and a joy to talk to. He had lots of suggestions of things to do in the area. Plus he had two ponds with fish you could watch and feed if you like. I really hope we can go back soon!! Highly recommend going to visit Dark Ridge Hide Out!!
Beautiful campsite by the creek, trout pond nearby, trails to awesome waterfalls, and a great host. We felt remote but safe and the few neighbors we had were friendly and quiet at night. We took our popup this time and can't wait to go back tent camping.
We loved our stay at Dark Ridge Hide Out. This is our second time and it was as good as the first. Curtis is an amazing host, his land is beautiful and this time he told us about an amazing sunset view - best we’ve ever seen!
This was our favorite Hipcamp stay so far. We love staying off the beaten path and this location was everything we were looking for. Curtis was so welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable about the area. His campsites and land are very well-maintained and thoughtfully laid-out. Everything was perfect for our 23 ft travel trailer. Curtis was thoughtful enough to let us borrow his 50 to 30 amp adapter because we forgot to bring one. We enjoyed the hiking trails on his property, the scenery, the sound of the creek, the fire pit, the trout pond, and the local waterfall hikes. We went to Boone two nights for dinner since it’s less than a 40 minute drive. This is a great location convenient to many high country attractions and we found this place to be very inspiring. Even though we had no cell phone reception here, the internet was super fast, so loved ones could still contact us in case of emergency. We loved it so much we went ahead and booked another stay in two months.
Perfect getaway! perfect host!!
We had to make last minute plans over Labor Day and we totally lucked out. Curtis is awesome and the property is beautiful. He is right there all the time if you need anything. We had a full rv hook up site, right next to the creek so we could hear the water all night. We took the nature walk, and fed the fish. There is so much to do in that area. We could not get it all done so we are going back!!
