The 'Ant Shack' is basic, hand built, quaint and mostly recycled. From the wide verandas you overlook a rainforest gully and can watch Nymboida River flow endlessly past. The outdoor campfire wins every time.

Black Mountain’s’ Ant Shack has everything you need for a night or a week `Unplugged’. No mobile, no internet and limited solar power.

A queen bed and bunks accommodate up to 4 people in the bedroom.

The Lounge/Kitchen has a sofa-bed couch, dining table, small fridge, 3 ring gas stove, sink and cupboards stocked with all the utensils you need. Rainwater is provided for drinking.

Limited solar power provides lighting, fans and a fridge. Candles, rechargeable lights and ice-filled eskies back-up when required - a return to the `old ways’ or romantic interlude. A small gas heater keeps winter chills at bay. One gas bottle is provided, additional gas supplied at cost.

There is a composting toilet close by and shared amenities provide a hot shower and additional compositing toilets.

Breakfast is not included because Black Mountain is remote, a long way from shops and fresh food.

Guests are welcome to use free internet which is available at the main house.

Eagles Nest, Myrtle Terrace, Platypus Leap and (Spangled) Drongo Dell are four campsites nearby. These areas can also be booked through Hipcamp.

The Ant Shack was a fantastic experience. It is a very well equipped 2 room shack, and a good set-up for a couple or a family to stay with everything you need including linen and towels. It is nestled in the bush on a beautiful and remote property with the Nymboida River flowing past just down the hill. Toilets and a hot shower are just up the hill. Merryl and Alistair are excellent hosts and we enjoyed chatting with them about their property and all the work they have done on it. Floating in the river on tubes at dusk was just perfect.

It was great to host Rebecca and her family and I enjoyed their visit. They left the Ant Shack perfectly and are welcome back anytime, hopefully when the mighty Nymboida is a bit lower and better for swimming!

The ant shack was stunning. It overlooks beautiful country and the River. We were met by merryl who guided us to the cabin. They have thought of everything from newspapers and firewwod for the campfire, solar energy to run a fridge and fan, and even an array of camplights, mosquito coils and repellent. All the utensils are available you literally just turn up and relax. Merryls commitment to conservation and ensuring the environment is preserved is a much appreciated value and our time spent at the cabin reflected her hard work.

If you are looking for a place that is remote this is the place for you.
We so enjoyed staying in The Ant 🐜 Shack.
The bed was so comfortable and it had everything we needed.
Waking up to nature at its best with the Nymboida river not that far from you and the singing of the birds in the morning. In the evenings enjoying the open fire place and looking up at the stars ✨ it truly is a place to unwind.
We took our kayak up stream and enjoyed some challenging but fun times on the Nymboida River.
Merryl really has a special place - please be mindful that you are out in nature and there is native wildlife that you need to respect as we are the visitors.
We hope to go again - 💕

It was a delight to host Merryn and David. They were friendly and appreciated the inevitable visits of our wildlife at the Shack. They left the place clean and tidy and I hope they come again with their friends.

Wonderful experience staying at the magical Ant Shack on the equally magical Nymboida river.

Getting there is half the fun, its a navigation exercise through fire tracks and densely populated forests. Take it slow and trust your instruments, it's worth the journey when you find it.

Warm welcome on arrival, made to feel right at home from the minute we arrived.

The access road down to the campground is a bit of a challenge for our car, so Merryl and Alistair went out of their way to solve that issue for us. Most appreciated.

Down to the campground - magic and enthralling. Everything needed for a safe and comfortable stay has been well thought out and well executed.

The shower facilities are first class, with super strong water pressure due to the excellent layout. Well defined campfire area with ample firewood. Multilple fresh water taps spread around the various sites too.

The shack itself is well made and beautiful. Could easily stay there for months :) The kitchen is fully stocked, as is the camp cooking supply box outside the hut. Beds are big and comfortable, and with the doors and windows open, it's like sleeping in luxury amongst the trees.

And then there is the breathtaking river ... see photos. There is a kayak under the hut that you are free to use if you want to go for a paddle up the river too.

In addition, there are several level camping sites artfully placed around the area. You could easily accommodate larger groups of tents with good levels of privacy, access to facilities, and fire safety.

Loved it, will be back as often as we can.
