Please be aware that we do have wildlife that comes through as we're right by National Forest. If you are not comfortable with a bear visiting looking for food, this is probably not the perfect place to stay as we are remote! Located in the mountains by Pecos, only 25 min drive to Santa Fe and 15 min to the Pecos canyon. Get the best of both worlds. Suitable for a couple or small family that seeks an outdoor experience and want to reconnect with nature. "Prairie Fire" has no electricity but candles, solar lights and oil lamps do the job. Site is secluded. Cell reception is spotty depending on provider and location. Wi-Fi access only available by parking area/host residence. Please check in before it gets dark (around 8:15 pm during summer months and 7:15 pm spring/fall) in order to avoid getting lost as we have no light pollution and it's dark!
Enjoy the unique experience in the magical La Cueva valley right by the Santa Fe National Forest. Pitch your tent or stay in our romantic hand painted 18' tipi "Prairie Fire" overlooking the arroyo on our picturesque 30 acre forest property. The cozy space has a queen size bed and a couch that turns into a bed. Do you take the road less traveled and like to be off the beaten path? Friendly pets are welcome, we do recommend to leave them on a leash especially if they tend to wander. Please let me know if you bring animals as there are other dogs on the property. There is a lot of wildlife that comes through. Please do not feed the wildlife and keep your food locked up or up in the trees. We do have bears, mountain lions, chipmunks, raccoons, deer, bobcats and many birds. , etc.
The restroom is a converted horse trailer with hot water, electricity and a compost toilet (shared with two camp sites). Firewood can be collected if there is no fire ban in place in Santa Fe County (fire ban generally from May through mid July before the monsoon season). The fire pit may be used to cook. There is also a Weber charcoal BBQ at the site.
The tepee is ideal for two people and max two children. Please add the additional extra person fee for any child over 2 year of age.
We consider last minute stays, overnighters, and tent camping.
Things to consider and be aware of:
We're located about 2 miles down a dirt road. During bad weather the road might be a bit slippery, a 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicle is recommended but not necessary.
To get to the teepee, it's a short walk. If you have a 4x4, you can drive to the site if the weather permits (at your own risk).
Best to do shopping and get gas in Santa Fe before you head up the mountain as there are only a few options.
We are at 7,300 feet. It gets cold during the winter months. Bring warm layers.
Things to do: A hiking trail wanders to the top of the hill that is overlooks our valley. If you want to explore more, the county dirt road goes up to Glorieta Baldy that has a view all the way to Albuquerque and the Espanola valley. There is also an old abandoned fire lookout tower (closed). Pecos river and canyon, Pecos National Historic Park and Monastery Lake (fishing) are about 8 miles.

Susanne is amazing. She’s very responsive, kind and personable. The teepee was amazing along with the neighborhood dogs and roosters. The place is amazing with great hiking trails. Highly recommend!
Everything was perfect
I wish I could live here. My friend and I had the best night’s sleep, had literally everything we needed, and felt safe. I hope to go back when I visit New Mexico again. It was a little hard to find, but well worth it. Our hosts were the sweetest people.
La Cueva Tipi was a great place to stay. It was super stocked with all the things you need. We didnt even need to bring if we didnt want to. The tipi was comfortable and the horse trailer was nice to open up and shower in nature.
It rained most of the time we were there. It was cold. We got our car stuck in the mud. Despite all that, our time in the tipi was my favorite experience of our trip to New Mexico. It was dry and cozy inside the tipi and Suzanne was beyond helpful. I can't recommend this place enough.
Awesome camping experience!
I was told how amazing camping was there and I decided to book some dates. From the moment I booked to the moment I checked out, Susanne was amazing about everything. The campsite had more than I expected and I was giving a quick tour. Hiking is definitely great and easily accessible. I would definitely be going back and recommending to friends.
Great stay in a fantastic location
We had a great time in the teepee, it was comfortable and Susanne provided everything we could need. The bathroom is ok, although I did struggle to get in and out of the horse trailer sometimes. The walks on the property were incredible and highly recommended. We would very happily return here to explore some more in the future.
