It has beautiful mesa views with plenty of privacy and a newly built outhouse within 50 yards. Madrid and sister village, Cerrillos are loaded with places to explore on foot or by other means. Both towns are very rich in history, from past ocean existance to Native American civilizations, silver and gold mining to booming wartime coalmining industries, to ghost towns.

A great place to stay near madrid
Great little spot for a getaway. Kim, the host, was very kind and really cared to make sure we had what we needed and our stay was enjoyable. Would go back and recommend!
Amazing view! Cute town! Accommodating host! Was at site #1 to take in a beautiful sunrise and sunset with the perfect cool breeze coming with each. The area is quiet and serene. There was a tent mat, rake, soften flatten out soil, fire extinguisher, shovel and a jar of cinnamon (Kim taught me it keeps snakes away!) didn’t see any but def sprinkled it around precariously. There was a clean outhouse including tp and a guided path to it, at night guided by solar lights. Great area to set up shop for a bit
Kim was an absolutely great host, she was attentive while still respecting our privacy. The landscape is stunning and the nearby village of Madrid is a joy to drive through. A must stay for anyone in the Santa Fe area.
This place is amazing!!! Off the beaten path, with rewarding views. Woke up to the sound of coyotes in the canyon (totally safe) and a beautiful sunrise. The host was incredibly nice, communicative and an overall badass! Great experience, great times.
Such a unique spot! This was our first Hip Camp and it won’t be the last! Kim was easy to communicate with. She provided more than expected at the site! One night here was ideal to check out Madrid (close to campsite but road makes it a 10 minute drive), and camp under the stars! I personally would not have wanted to bring a RV / trailer up the road unless it is a rugged build/design, or you are willing for it to take some rocky road abuse and are going to stay for awhile, we truck camped but her tent spot is a great option too.
This site was super private and the views were so beautiful. It was everything we expected and hoped for. The outhouse was also very convenient! Kim greeted us with her dog Cole and she was super kind. You might want to make sure you have an all wheel drive vehicle for the ride up the Mesa. It’s a dirt road with quite a few rocks and is washed out in some places. Madrid is a cute little town and I wish we stayed longer to check it out!
Highly recommend this peaceful spot
My family camped on the mesa (site #1) for three nights and absolutely loved it. Kim was so communicative and helpful. The camping area is open but reasonably private, and we saw some magical sunrises/sunsets/rainbows there. The outhouse is nearby and was clean and well decorated. We were in a minivan, and, as others have noted, the road to the site was a little intimidating at first. But we took it slow, and everything was fine. We loved exploring Madrid, which is just at the base of the road from the site. The general store in town has everything you might need, and the Mineshaft had good food and music when we visited. I hope we can make it back to the mesa one day.
Amazing views / amazing host
This spot is AMAZING!!!
The views are spectacular. And the campsite was so well kept. You can tell Kim takes special pride, and thus care, of her property. AND she is amazing! Friendly, helpful, balancing all she is responsible for with Grace. Well done Kim!
Absolutely stunning vista and very private campsite. Very inviting setting and Kim came over to greet me on arrival, which I appreciated. Lovely fire pit & evening coyote serenade, with a small cemetery nearby, so the whole place felt a little sacred.
I found the last few miles of rocky incline to be a rather precarious drive, but I own a very non-sports utility vehicle, so your mileage may literally vary.
