NOTE AS OF SUMMER 2021: Some road work may be happening this summer. Watch for equipment on your drive up. The road has deteriorated in some places this past winter due to snow melt, so drive carefully. This small 2-room cabin is isolated on a mountain top at approximately 9,300 foot elevation. It is very rustic and in the forest with beautiful views of the valley below and surrounded by fir and aspen forest.
The cabin is mostly unfurnished (except for shelving, a couple tables and 5 chairs, so bring your own bedding (cots, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets). There is no electricity or heat. You have lots of privacy and solitude here, and although there are two cabins on the adjoining properties, they are hidden by the forest. Our neighbors are sometimes there in the summer, and if there are noise problems, let me know and I'll address it the best I can.
We have about 3 miles of trails on our 139-acre property, and we will provide you a trail map and show you around if you ask! Feel free to hike our trails and explore.
Keep in mind that this cabin is on top of a mountain (Ocate Mesa) and there is a lot of wildlife: elk, black bears, coyotes, chipmunks, rabbits, mice and possibly a mountain lion. This means that you must keep the cabin clean, do not leave food outside or in the open, and do not bring any meats that require cooking (only pre-cooked meats or dried jerky are allowed) as these can attract wildlife. There are no kitchen appliances (refrigerator, stove, etc.) so you will need to bring your own cooler for food, storage containers for your food, etc. The cabin does close up securely, so it is safe to leave food inside as long as it is in containers. The road to get here is rough in places, so an AWD or 4WD vehicle with clearance is necessary. It is uphill all the way and somewhat steep. So take it slow and watch for ruts and rocks. Hope to see you on this beautiful mountaintop!

Aspen Cabin is absolutely incredible, I highly recommend. My family of four plus our two dogs take a summer vacation outdoors every year. We usually stay in a tent but thought we could use a change. This spot is a winner! One of our top family vacations we have ever taken. The cabin was perfect. We loved the simplicity of it, it was insulated well, we were pleased that it stayed cool during the day and warm at night. The "main room" of the cabin was a great family area. We used the counter space for preparing meals and storage of groceries we brought. We played family board and card games around the table, the chairs for guests were a huge plus. Our kids and dogs slept on mats and sleeping bags on the floor, no complaints from them. The "bedroom" in the cabin has the most incredible view at sunset and sunrise looking out from the large glass panes. We brought an air matress and slept comfortably on the bed frame provided. The front porch and fire pit were definitly our favorite areas. We spent a lot of time out there enjoying the view, watching the dogs and kids play, playing cards and board games, and enjoying beverages. We went on a few hikes with our kids (ages 10 and 12) and dogs and everyone really enjoyed exploring the beautiful land. A map was provided at check in, it was accurate and useful. The 10 gallons of water provided upon check in was plenty and the cabin is stocked with a lot of great items like toilet paper, soap, dish soap, aluminum foil, kleenex, etc. There is also a small amount of cans and non perishable food items that seem to have been left by others. We added to this pile because community rocks. There was plenty of firewood as well to use. I would give the set up at A+.
We are city folk and were not prepared for the road. This was no ones fault but ours as this was mentioned in the overview as well as Crystal made sure to mention it to us directly. I clearly did not understand the kind of problems that could occur. Our first day up it was raining a lot and the road got very muddy. Our Ford Freestyle got stuck a .4 mile hike down from Aspen Cabin. We ended up walking our things to the cabin and were able to leave our car there for two days till the roads dried up and we were able to get out the morning we were leaving. Even with this uneasy situation of being stuck, totally our fault, this was a fantastic trip and well worth it. To make us feel even more like dumb city folk, the day before we left we tried to move our car and must have left the car on. We came back to a dead battery, haha! Star, Crystal's partner, was SO wonderful and helpful, she gave us a jump. Crystal was awesome, great with communication; all around wonderful hosts!
We will definitely be back (with a different vehicle, haha). Great memories made!
We loved the cabin and the beautiful little trail system. We hope to visit again after they get some rain.
Went to greet the first winter storm and it was well worth the view! Crystal is great. We did not have AWD or 4WD, and although we made it up the mountain since the conditions were dry on our arrival, we had to be really careful with the mud on the way down. Would recommend 4 wheel drive!

Yes, that first snow was impressive, but a lot of mud to deal with afterwards. I had never seen that much snow middle of September, so I was pretty surprised! I was worried you all would be too cold, but was happy to learn you enjoyed it.
What an amazing experience! Star and Crystal we’re beyond friendly and accommodating— making a beautiful place that much more beautiful! If you’re looking for some serenity in this crazy world, this is the place for you. I will be back without a doubt. Thank you Star and Crystal for making us feel at home!

Thank you Anna! It makes me happy that you enjoyed your stay and were able to relax. It was nice to chat with you. We'll reopen for the 2021 summer season next May. Hope you come back and visit us.
