Fort Pierre Campground

This is the type of camping that fills you with longing: for a memory that never forgets, for a body that never tires or dies, for time to stand still. I pitched my little Zpak tent on the prairie, without another soul in sight, save the birds that dove in and out of the grass like dolphins on the ocean. Even in the spring, you'll have a little trouble maneuvering your car onto the tall grass, so take it slow in anything less than a 4-wheel drive. Make sure you download a PDF of the roads within the grasslands; I was a little puzzled at the lack of signs or information, but ultimately I just drove in and set up. What a place! No bathrooms, water, or even evidence of other humankind. Just the wide sky, the wolves, the birds, and me.
