My second stay here... I came back for the animals and was not disappointed. They are obviously the highlight here, and I'm even more inspired by this beautiful sanctuary the second time around. You're lucky if you get the whole field to yourself like I did, but there's plenty of room to spread out either way. Susan is a lovely host with great communication. Thanks for the stay :)
Had a great time at this pretty property. My son loved all the farm animals and we had a blast on a last minute camping trip. I loved how they provided fire wood, a fire pit and a torch!
Just an absolute magical and otherworldly place. I left a few days ago and am still coming down from the dopamine high of communing with horses, goats, pigs, donkeys, chickens, dogs, etc all against the backdrop of spectacular and beautiful Missouri farmland. I honestly can't say enough good about Susan and this beautiful place she's created without edging into cliches. I will DEFINITELY be back. ♥️
Fun, amazing, relaxing
We had such a blast staying here. The animals were all super friendly and so much fun and Susan was amazing. She was super friendly and easy going and we will DEFINITELY be going back in the spring.
Everything was great! The host was extremely nice and explained everything we needed to know when we got there. Our kids loved the farm animals, all were very friendly. Especially snickers the donkey. We will definitely be back!
Secluded and quaint
This place was awesome. Far enough away from town that it was dark at night and I couldn’t hear the drone of nearby highways.
Yes there was poop from the farm animals. I didn’t find it to be unmanageable, and the presence of animals walking around was definitely worth it. Also, owner said that she has a mower she uses to mulch it, but it had broken.
Owner was super nice and helpful. A couple of things I’d probably do if I were her: 1) Make the locations of the dumpster and water spigot easier to access/locate. 2) Put down a more permanent structure for the lavatory.
If you are spooked by farm animals (chickens, geese, donkeys, horses, goats, pigs, etc) this will not be a fun place for you. They were close and made noise throughout the day and night (bring some earplugs if you’re a lite sleeper!). If you like animals, or are at least fine with keeping your distance, it’ll be no problem.
It was a good time staying at Hummingbird Holly Farm Sanctuary. There are a few things that we don't feel were covered in any of the reviews, which made the expectations likely incorrect. The hosts were certainly hospitable and it was an affordable and easy way to connect with some family. The animals were definitely a plus and a cool experience.
The flip side of the animals were that there was poop throughout the camping experience. We searched for this in other reviews but didn't see it so we assumed there was some sort of separation between the camping and the animals. You'll just need to weigh that in. I can't say that this alone would keep us from going again, but definitely would be a detractor.
The camping experience with other campers is akin to what you'd get at a public park camping experience. It's probably actually a little better. You can see and hear other camp sites (maybe 100 feet away?) but it's bearable for sure.
The bathrooms were also very much a true camping experience. We selected the location because it said it had a bathroom. We assumed it'd be some sort of basic outhouse or something. It's really using the restroom in a small tent into a plastic bag. This can certainly be better than the woods or no bathroom but it's on the line.
Outside of other campers, it was very quiet and beautiful at night with the stars.
We would certainly go again for the first-time farm camping experience if we had never been.
