The campsite is on a wooded hill with great views overlooking the banks of the MO. Robert met us and we followed him up to our campsite. He was a gracious host, providing a 12 volt battery with a converter and lights as well as a cooler with a couple of gallons of wonderful well water. This was our first stop on a 2 week camping/road trip and it made for a great first evening.
The Brogans
A wonderful unexpected find off the beaten path! An amazing mountain spot with the most generous and friendly hosts we have had the privilege to meet. If you are looking for that one of a kind sanctuary away from the hustle of the modern world and just want to relax in a hammock as the sun rises in the distance then check this place out!!!
Bob and Charlene really made us feel welcome — escorting us to the remote camping from the main road (past an impressive array of old boats and vehicles, providing cooked dinners, loads of water (it was hot!), selling us fresh eggs, and sharing history of the area. The camping area is on a tree-covered knoll with a cleared view looking into the Missouri River Valley, and features an eclectic mix of lawn furniture, several large picnic tables, and a stage. The marine toilet, set up in the middle of an old trailer, is unconventional, but so is everything about this place, including Bob and Charlene, which is a big part of Happy Hollow’s funky charm.
Robert was so kind to us. It was our first camping night as a family. Robert and his partner generously kept our two hot, tired daughters occupied and calm while my husband, son, and sister struggled to put up our tent in the dark. Robert and his partner also provided delicious well water to drink and bacon and eggs for us to make for breakfast, apologizing that they couldn't cook because Robert had an appointment in the morning. In short, we couldn't have asked for sweeter hosts.
The campsite was large and fairly level. The toilet is in an old camper beside the site, kinda creepy and a little unappealing, but serviceable. The view was lovely. No mosquitoes, lots of cooling breezes.
The road up to the site was bumpy and twisty and passes several apparently abandoned cars. There's a spot where the track was flooded a little, nothing our Kia Soul couldn't handle.
It was very peaceful. If not for a historic heat wave, our night would have been pretty near perfect.
Bob and Charlene are some of the most gracious hosts! They made sure to accommodate for everything and made our trip so fun. I couldn't recommend their place enough!
Bob and Charlene are some of the most gracious hosts I've ever met! They took care of every accommodation and helped us have the best time. Thanks for everything!
Robert has a beautiful place out there. They supplied us with enough firewood for 3 days, and delicious well water! Looking forward to going out there again (been out there 2 times so far)
The property was nestled perfectly up on a ridge with a great view of the rolling, wooded hills. They had hammock setup and multiple picnic tables. Additionally, our spot had a stage that our girls really enjoyed performing plays on and being silly. Others may use this for music purposes, extra seating, or even a small tent.
Right off the property is the creek and swimming hole. It's either a quick car ride down the hill or a brief 8-12 minute walk depending on your pace. We all loved swimming there and the water is mostly knee level to 4 foot deep at most with gravel bars around it. Great spot!
As for the hosts, they are wonderful people! Robert made sure we found our spot and was wonderful to visit with. His wife was so sweet too. She brought our girls popsicles, gathered eggs for us, and showed us her hummingbirds. If you are bringing children, I highly recommend having Robert and his wife as your hosts. The care and sentiment is unmatched!

Gee Whiz Tyler! Thank You for the awesome review. I thoroughly enjoyed You & Taylor & your beautiful daughters having a wonderful weekend at Happy Hollow! I don't have any grandchildren or a son, but I have two daughters that are the best. Spending special time with the family 👪 is the most important time invested. Anyway, what I really meant to say is; " You're always welcome home little brother!" Always your Big Brother Bob.👻
