PRIMITIVE - HIKE IN CAMPSITE

Weekends: $20 Weekdays: $15

About the campsite:

Camp Palustria is on the edge of a beautiful marsh within 75 feet of a trout stream. It is about 1000ft off of the Superior Hiking Trail. The campsite is primitive, which includes fire pit with grill, table, chairs, and composting outhouse.

Parking is on the road and you will need to hike about 600ft to get to the campsite. The first 400ft of the trail is a swamp with a simple elevated boardwalk through most of it.  It is usually passable with hiking boats or street shoes, but there might be some muddy spots. Dispersed winter camping is also available.

This campsite was featured on NPR Marketplace.

Campsite is closed during hunting season.

About the property:

Trembling Gardens is my 10 acre swamp camp paradise in the rural suburb of Rice Lake. I am currently developing the land as a personal off-grid vacation home with a tent cabin under construction. The property is less than 20 minutes away from downtown Duluth and Canal Park.

“Oh the swamp is a mystical place all right. It's sacred. You think you're any different from me or your friends or this tree? If you listen hard enough, you can hear every living thing breathing together. You can feel everything growing. We're all living together, even if most folks don't act like it. We all have the same roots and we are all branches of the same tree. In the swamp, we see visions of people we've lost, people we loved, folks we think are gone. But the swamp tells us they're not. We're still connected to them. Time is an illusion and so is death.” -Avatar, The Last Airbender, Book Two: Earth, Chapter 4: The Swamp

Great property! The description as a primitive campsite is accurate. The walk in was dry when we arrived but a little rain on day 2 reminded us that Blake did say, "Bring boots."
We visited at the end of the growing season and the path in could use a little TLC. Yet in a way it added to the private feel.
We enjoyed our stay!

Great price and spot for a quick getaway. Nice and secluded, fairly quiet. Bathroom could use some upkeep.

Got in at around 9 so it was very dark but we hiked our way in okay! Wouldn’t recommend to an inexperienced camper/glamper but overall we had a great night. Host had great instructions.

The campsite is just off of a major road and it is wonderfully woodsy. The hike to the site only adds to the ambiance. Great site. Great host.

Great property! The camp is very well set up. Nice trail in...the boardwalk made for a good little hike in and having the camp setback from the road makes it very private.

We enjoyed our weekend at Camp Palustria. It was easy to find and was the perfect size and location for us. There are only a few reasons we wouldn’t give it 5 stars. One was because it was very overgrown around the boardwalk area and there were a few spots at the end that had broken pallets. It looks like they may have just rotted away from the weather, but it made it very tricky to walk through. We also couldn’t find the creek due to overgrown grass. The camp spot itself was cleared out well but it was very difficult to find a spot for our square 4 person tent because of a small tree in the middle and a hole in the ground with rocks. But most of this was just a one time annoyance and didn’t ruin our trip.
