COVID 19 - when you make a REQUEST TO BOOK, we will message you with the precautions we have implemented to keep our guests safe and enjoy your stay at our sites.

COLD SEASON - please note the Wooden tent is not heated or insulated and recommended only for experienced and prepared winter tent campers. Please consider our "ROCK BOTTOM CABIN" listing for winter camping. Also the 4WD access, is walk in only, with snow on the ground.

If you are an experienced winter tent camper with proper winter gear - please message us for availability

Wooden Tent site is a primitive site, (NO electricity, plumbing, heat, or AC), in a secluded hardwood forest setting, 300-foot elevation drop from ridge top to valley campsite. Easy walk in / drive in ( 4 wheel drive )  trail access, plus five miles of woodland hiking trails on property, maps provided. The Wooden Tent campsite is accessible by four wheel drive vehicle - minimum clearance 6 inches,  - if the soils are not saturated. If guests do not arrive in a four wheel drive vehicle, we are able to help transport your gear to the site with a UTV while you enjoy the walk in, or a tractor and trailer if conditions are poor.  Let us know your needs when you book with us and we will do our best to help you with getting to the site. The  Wooden Tent sleeps 2 adults comfortably with plenty of room at campsite for additional tents as well, ( please inquire ). This campsite though close to highway access is very quiet and secluded.  The only artificial lights visible from the campsite are the occasional airplane and your own flashlights or lanterns ( strongly recommended because it is very dark in our woods at night). When the sky is clear, the  stars are fabulous.

Our Wooden Tent campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts - a nice fireplace (with firewood), picnic table, outhouse, and solid shelter. We also provide a 3" - queen size mattress pad, on the floor of the Wooden Tent, and fresh drinking water in Thermos jugs.

There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride.

For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing  or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. however the Wooden Tent is not heated so bring winter sleeping gear.

This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows.

Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites. No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book.

We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

This was our absolute favorite campsite we have been to; the trails, the atmosphere and the hospitality were fantastic. My daughter, myself and our dog had THE best girls weekend in the cabin in the woods. Please do yourself a favor and come stay at the Gilles farm!!

The fire pit/camp stove is the bomb, it functions like a rocket stove the way it draws in the air from the front. The grate is heavy duty (welding gloves provided on-site) and not adjustable height-wise. We brought our own grate to employ on top so we wouldn’t lose a brat, hot dog or steak. Trail system is awesome and no pesky neighbors anywhere near by. Joan was busy with chores so she got Mike for us. Mike took us down to the site and is very knowledgeable and a great storyteller. We loved our stay!

Mike and Joan are FANTASTIC hosts. You can really tell that they're on hipcamp only to share this bit of magic they have with people to bring a smile to their faces. You will have a constant smile on your face. As you look around at the love, care, patience, and skill that went into making such a space. To think one man, with some help from friends and family, made these trails and campsites! I am so LUCKY to only live two hours from the Gilles family farm. It is definitely one of my happy places.

The wooden tent site has everything you need for a rustic night in the woods! Mike and Joan have spent a lot of time making sure campers are comfortable and have plenty of hiking options. Mike gave me a map when I arrived and went over with me, over 6 miles of groomed trails, some flat and easy, others steep and more challenging. They also provide you with 5 gallons of fresh water, firewood, and water for hand washing/dishes. Communication with Mike prior to arriving was great. Can’t wait to go back!

This campsite is absolutely spectacular. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was a place we'd be returning to. Mike was kind enough to give us a ride in his truck with all of our belongings since our car wouldn't be able to make it to the site. The campsite was perfect and has its own bathroom! Lots of space to enjoy! We spent the day exploring on the trails and soaking up the beautiful weather. Our dog ziggy absolutely loved it and we will definitely be back. We only stayed two nights and 5 hours into our trip we talked about how we wanted to stay longer. Do not miss out on this slice of paradise! It was so wonderful to connect with nature & enjoy some peace. Thank you! We can't wait to come back!!

Mike and Joan are incredible hosts and the wooden tent campsite is one of our favorites in the Driftless. The natural playscape at the site is perfect for kids, and we love hiking the trails. We will definitely be back!
