COLD SEASON - please note the Wooden tent is not heated or insulated and recommended only for experienced and prepared winter tent campers. Please consider our "ROCK BOTTOM CABIN" listing for winter camping. Also the 4WD access, is walk in only, with snow on the ground

Wooden tent in a secluded hardwood forest setting, 450-foot elevation drop from ridge top to valley campsite. Easy walk in / drive in ( 4 wheel drive )  trail access, plus five miles of woodland hiking trails on property, maps provided. The Wooden Tent campsite is accessible by four wheel drive vehicle - minimum clearance 6 inches,  - if the soils are not saturated. If guests do not arrive in a four wheel drive vehicle, we are able to help transport your gear to the site with a UTV while you enjoy the walk in, or a tractor and trailer if conditions are poor.  Let us know your needs when you book with us and we will do our best to help you with getting to the site. The  Wooden Tent sleeps 2 adults comfortably with plenty of room at campsite for additional tents as well, ( please inquire ). This campsite though close to highway access is very quiet and secluded.  The only artificial lights visible from the campsite are the occasional airplane and your own flashlights or lanterns ( strongly recommended because it is very dark in our woods at night). When the sky is clear, the  stars are fabulous.

Our Wooden Tent campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts - a nice fireplace (with firewood), picnic table, outhouse, and solid shelter. We also provide a 3" - queen size mattress pad, on the floor of the Wooden Tent, and fresh drinking water in Thermos jugs.

There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride.

For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing  or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. however the Wooden Tent is not heated so bring winter sleeping gear.

This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows.

10/10! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were accommodated to the fullest. We were given an overview of the family farm and introduced to Mike’s daughter and son in law who gave us a tour of the trails and brought us by 4 wheel drive back to the wooden tent site. The trails were beyond beautiful, and by the time we arrived to our little wooden tent in the woods we were in awe of the clean white sheets and shelving for storage when we opened the door. Bring your own head lamps and flashlights (they have some too) if you want to see in the night - this site is fully primitive and secluded. You can’t hear any noise and starlight is the only light given, or as Mike says, “if there’s a plane overhead!” Amazing spot. Anyone would love this; from camper to glamper!

This place was our first Hipcamp experience and I don't think we'll book camping any other way! The campsite was completely secluded and gorgeous. The wooden tent was very quaint and clean. There is an outhouse at the site. We originally thought we'd have to walk in and Michael was kind enough to put together a cart for us, although it was accessible with our friend's SUV. Really nice hosts. They have maps of all the trails on their land. They even built a new picnic table for our stay and brought up drinking water for us and our pups. If you are looking for a place in the area, this one is a must.

It is amazing sometimes to think about all of the events and circumstances that had to happen to bring you to where you are now, and I feel extremely lucky to have crossed paths with Mike and Joan. They have a really beautiful piece of land, hidden away from traffic and distractions, that everyone should take advantage of. Our stay here was honestly more than we could have hoped for, and the only thing lacking was more time to explore

Fantastic site! I highly, highly recommend. The wooden tent is essentially a small cabin - very clean and comfortable (thick pads provided), with built-in shelves for storage, ceiling vents and wired windows for great ventilation (this had been a small concern prior to our trip, since temperatures hovered around 100 °F all weekend, but it was actually cool in the cabin). Mike was a great host, and provided plenty of cold drinking water, elevated bins for trash and recycling, and maps of the surrounding trails. When we arrived at his farm house (about half an hour outside Winona), we followed Mike across a field and down a rough trail/road to the property. Driving down in a non-4x4 is not recommended, and if it had been wet I would've hiked in (cart provided). The site is magical. Huge area for our dogs to run around, natural jungle gym made out of crosshatched logs, beautiful new ten-person picnic table, and an enormous fire pit/grill (plenty of firewood, kindling and dry newspaper on-site). We've been camping for years, all over the country, and this was one of the best experiences/sites we've ever had. A barred owl even visited after sundown.

Advice: Bring a lantern - it's shady and it gets dark. And make a weekend out of it. This is really a sit that needs to be experienced. It's an adventure. The trails surrounding the site are fantastic, and we rented a canoe from Geneva's Hideaway (over in Peterson, 30 miles outside Winona) and canoed down the Root River, which was spectacular. Also, there's plenty of room for a group. The wooden tent sleeps two adults comfortably, but the site itself could accommodate plenty of other tents.

We'll definitely be coming back.

The site was very nice. When you first arrive you are on a typical dairy farm and we werent sure if we were going to have a private campsite, but we did. They had water, chopped wood and even a futon mattress inside the tent-cabin. We got our subaru crosstrek with AWD down and 9/10ths of the way up in the rain, but then Farmer Mike came and towed us out with his tractor and tow rope. It was fun and his dogs helped! Very beautiful forested areas on half his land and he'll be happy to share some of the hiking trails with you. Thank you Mike and Joan, we are so grateful you shared your land with us!

Our brand new subaru crosstrek (AWD) made it down and 9/10ths of the way backup and Farmer Mike was more than happy to bring his tractor over and tow us out, which made us safe to try out our new baby. ;-)WOODEN TENT IN THE WOODSWOODEN TENT IN THE WOODSWOODEN TENT IN THE WOODS

Mike and his family/staff were extremely hospitable and helpful during our brief stay. They took us down to the campsite and picked us up the next day. Cold drinking water was provided as well as a hiking map and even a battery operated fan for the wooden tent. The latter came in very handy for the 90’s temperature. Overall a fun unique experience!!

Very secluded site. The "tent" was cozy and kept us dry in the rain. Mike and Joan were great hosts, checking to make sure we had everything we need. Wish we had more time to walk all the hiking trails. Definitely need 4WD to get to the site, and even with that we got stuck in wet mud on the way out. Mike pulled us out easily with the tractor though.
Would definitely recommend.

Loved this place! So private and well put together. Got to have a good 4 wheel drive car to get to site, but seems like Mike would be willing to get you and your stuff there in his off road vehicle if needed. The cabin and surrounding hiking trails were magical. Talking to Tom and Joan about the woods and their dairy was so interesting.

The wooden tent was great and Mike was awesome. There are lots of trails he cut into his woods which are really nice. This was my first hipcamp experience and it makes me want to do another one.
