Stayed at the wooden tent last year so excited to try out Mike & Joan's newest site, Round Mound. The site has all the amenities of the others - clean, not-smelly compost toilet, excellent set-up, plenty of firewood - but with a different feel. We appreciated the openness, seeing the sunsets, and having the open fields to play in. Like other times, Mike and Joan were a delight - took time to introduce our kiddos to their newest calves and talk to us about the farm.

The trails continue to be a huge benefit. Spent a day biking and hiking.

Our 16-foot trailer fit easily, and straightforward to back into the site. Getting a huge RV in there would be a challenge, but anything medium or small pretty darned easy.

Lots of room for trailers/RVs. Mike has a hose for fill-up and let us dump into his septic on the way out (convenient, right by the road in). Cool bridge on the propertyLittle hikersExcellent shady area for cooking and eating (picnic table), looking up from the edge of the woods

Highly recommend the Round Mound Campsite at the Gilles Farm! Mike's hospitality was outstanding as was the campsite! The outhouse was by far the best I have seen at a remote campsite ever. They provided dry, cut wood along with all you needed to start your fire as well. Drinking water was provided and brought out to the site. The site had a great picnic table and was super private. And the trails.... WOW!!! If you hike, run, or mountain bike....this is the place to go!! We took our fat bikes out for a couple of hours and had a blast! Hope to get back again to hike the trails!

This site has definitely been added to our top favorites list. The site is very roomy and can accommodate tents and small, possibly mid-sized campers and RV’s. The site is very private and has its own outhouse. The outhouse is probably one of the cleanest and best we’ve seen. The site also has carpeting to place outside your tent or camper to keep the dirt out of the sleeping area and to prevent a big mud hole outside your door (ingenious... so simple and so effective).

There’s always something to do while camping on the site. There’s miles of trails on the property for either hiking or mountain biking. The trails are very well groomed. Each trail has its unique view or sight to see; from the troll under a wooden bridge to the faces on the trees, to the many wild flowers, plants and animals to see (if you’re quiet and keep your eyes open).

Around the camp you get to enjoy shade most of the day and beautiful sunsets in the evening. At night, there is virtually no artificial light to fade out the star light. There’s always nature sounds to hear around camp. During the day you can hear the killdeer in the fields, and other birds in the woods. In the evening and at night, the owls are quite vocal. The coyotes were yipping one of the night we stayed, but they were distant enough not to scare the children or get the dogs worked up.

Mike and Joan are very hospitable and accommodating. They go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. The wood pile was well stocked (which was good considering it was a cold weekend), and we never ran out of fresh water. They even brought us drinking water and drinking bowls for our two dogs.

We did not have one negative experience with the host or with the campsite. We highly recommend this site and the hosts. Thank you, Mike and Joan, for opening up your land for us to enjoy.

This is the second review I’ve done on the Round Mound site. Normally I only do one review, but this experience was much different than our last experience. The site was perfectly set up like last time and the hosts were just as awesome as last time. What was different this time around is that instead of relying on the firewood that Mike and Joan provided because it was so cold, we had record or close to record high temps. That brought on new challenges… primarily, staying comfortable in the hot weather.

The hosts were very hospitable once again and reached out to us before our arrival to find out if we were interested in a stock tank to serve as a pool while we camped. We of course took them up on the offer. The “pool” was about six feet in diameter and almost three feet deep and was a very welcome sight when we got to camp. After setting up camp, the kids jumped right in to cool off. During our stay the host checked in on us to make sure we had cold drinking water available.

As I said in a previous review, the site is fairly shady, which was a huge bonus this time around because of the heat. The kids got a pleasant surprise when the cattle in the pasture next to the site came to visit. At night, the breeze gently blowing through the tent was a wonderful relief. We also got the opportunity to explore the trails a little more and to enjoy the beauty of the land.

I would love to keep this site a secret, but I’m not that kind of person. I once again, highly recommend the Round Mound site. Whether you want to do nothing all weekend or are looking to do outdoor activities while you camp, this is definitely the site for you.

The Round Mound Campsite was great, we will definitely come back again. Mike and Joan were gracious hosts, providing ample firewood and water. The washing station and the well placed collection bins made cleaning up easy. Great spots for putting up tents or backing in a camper in the shade. Totally secluded from the rest of the farm once you're back in the Round Mound. Lots of coyotes and owls to listen to! Access right off the interstate was also great.

LOVED this camp site! One of the best! The owners provide absolutely everything one would need for a weekend camping trip. The site was secluded and my dog loved running around off leash. It is tucked right next to a beautiful pasture (where the happiest cows will come to say hey!), and next to a gorgeous wooded area. The entire property is beautiful to explore, with private trails spanning miles. This site also has abundant firewood, a beautiful picnic table and fire area, and the best outhouse I've ever seen! One can tell the owners take pride in this space, and I feel so lucky they are sharing it with Hipcamp campers. We will be back!

Welcoming hosts with a beautiful space. They have thought of everything we could possibly need and the surrounding trails offer the very best of what south eastern Minnesota can offer. When pulling in we thought it would be fun to experience a working farm, but soon realized that there was so much more. Highly recommend!

This is the way the world should be. Mike and Joan have opened their farm to a few campers in sites they maintain thoughtfully and meticulously, and at a bargain price because they do not want to exclude anyone. The Round Mound site we stayed at had everything we could want: a flat tent site nestled in shading oaks and aspens, a nearby private gathering area with picnic table and barbeque, fresh water for drinking, cooking and washing from a barrel with a faucet, free firewood, and an outhouse that is simply the cleanest, best smelling outhouse I have ever encountered, filled with pine shavings instead of chemicals to deal with the waste. They even provide a carpet for you to place at the threshold of your tent for taking off your shoes. Mike and Joan are extremely warm and genuine and happy to share their farm with campers who they take joy from when they are able to appreciate the location. The farm is 50% active pasture with dairy cattle they take pains to give a low stress life, and 50% extensive well-mapped wooded trails for hiking or running. We were moving across country and happened upon this site at the last minute of a long day driving and were delighted we did. Such an improvement over the public mega-campsites we battled for on much of the trip.
