Great last minute option!
We booked our camping trip to pictured rocks pretty last second and although we would have preferred staying closer to the rocks high swamp camp provided a solid alternative. It’s just about 40 minutes from most of the popular hikes. The camps were very lively through the night with one group performing folk music in the late night. The community fire pit was a nice place to meet campers who had traveled to see the famous rocks.
If you’re looking for a camp with a lively community fill, I could recommend high swamp camp enough!
Amazing trip and host
Chris was such a friendly and generous host and the land was incredibly beautiful. The spots were spacious and private. The bathroom situation was not nearly as big a deal as I had originally thought. We used a portable toilet. I also brought my own firepit and table. Chris plans to add to the sites so we are pretty excited for the future of the site, not to mention it’s great location. 10/10 would recommend.
My friends and I only stayed one night and left very early in the morning, but we had a great time. The campsite was good and Chris was friendly and helpful in answering questions we had about the surrounding area.
Avoid if you can
Initially our stay was quite pleasant but as time went on, it became increasingly disappointing. First our host messages us telling us to set up at site 8 the second the last. We get there any someone is already set up there so we go to the next available. He comes by soon after and tells us this is ok even though this site is typically for larger campers. I asked a few times if we wanted us to move and he assured us it was fine. He comes by our site (under the influence) 2-3 times a day as early as 7am. By day three we come back from a hike and there is a large group of campers setting up about 5 feet from us on our site. Now Chris says our site is a multi camper site? Keep in mind we have a 4 year old and 6 month old. In the morning we go about our typical routine and Chris comes by saying that now we can’t use our generator like we have been for 3 days. Fine I understand and we turn it off. Later that day he takes the picnic table away from our site. So we decide to pack up and leave because we have one night left. We left on good terms and he asked for a good review. Now he is messaging us saying we are not welcome back and if he sees us next year he will kicks us out. Very different from our other Hipcamp experiences.
Chris was an excellent host. His sites were well laid out and he has plans to accommodate trailers and rv's in the future. There is no bathroom or shower yet so bring your own. A peaceful place and I highly recommend staying here.
Awesome spot with a great vibe
Fantastic place to camp! The host is incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful (honestly, he's awesome!). The camp is close to all that the fantastic things the area has to offer. You can keep to yourself at your site, or hang with others in a relaxing communal area. We will certainly be returning in the future.
10 stars! Highly recommend!
Chris is a great host! We loved his campsites! It is out in the “boonies”! He came to check if We needed anything and to chat some. We will return someday and hope He will join Us a little longer for chatting.
Very peaceful until our last night! Not anything to do with Chris and His awesome camp! Some campers came a little way down from Us, ran a generator most of the night and all morning until They went off to play and We had to pack up to leave. Night wasn’t so bad because, for Me it drowned out the night silence but, in the morning when having breakfast and a cup of coffee, wanting to enjoy the sun and abundance of wildlife the generator was running. I love places like Chris’s camp because, I want to enjoy the outdoors not listen to man made noise. I got a great video of a squirrel yelling at Us from the tree next to Us but, Generator noise in the background ruined it. We had seen deer the afternoon before but, with the generator running no way would They be around to see before We had to leave. The other campers that came in right accross from Us like 4 people We could not even hear Them, They were so quite! Just saying this to make people aware to be respectful of other campers and why so many people love camping on a place like Chris’s.
I hope everyone that uses Chris’s place respects Him and His property by packing in and out, cleaning up after Yourselves and is respectful as well as grateful to Him for the use of His land so He will continue to allow its use by hipcampers.
Thank You Chris so much for the use of Your wonderful place! Don’t change it much or go overboard with any additions You maybe contemplating. 😀 We love it the way it is!
It was very easy to get to His place! Follow His directions and You will not have any problem. We didn’t use goggle but, a different map app and it followed exactly what Chris had sent Us for directions. It is a MILE in on a dirt road!
Chris is very nice and accommodating. Our electric cooker went out and Chris brought out a very nice grill for us to use to make food. He also provides a large communal bonfire that is very nice.
