The sky here is so clear you feel like you can reach up and touch the stars. When you camp in the tall pines, they block the wind at the bottom where you are so there's no blowing your tent around, yet you can see the trees swaying and hear the breeze. You will be surrounded by the night sounds, peepers and crickets to sing you to sleep along with the bass of the bullfrog and lately an owl has taken up residence and will come to visit and call to you during the night. If you're lucky, you could catch a glimpse of the young porcupine who have been spotted in the woods recently. They're shy, so you won't be bothered by them but they will sit high in the trees and chatter to you. Also, check out the other listings here at Camp Stonewood Ranch if a tipi would be something to peak your interest! A ten foot tipi stands in the forest, waiting for someone to come and enjoy a unique experience. You are within 30 miles of Grayling, Cadillac and Traverse City where there is always something doing, from festivals to wineries, horse shows on a grand scale to kayaking on the Manistee. Stonewood is just 10 miles outside of Kalkaska to the north and Fife Lake to the southwest. The Shore to shore trail is within minutes of the camp, and the North country trail is less then 10 miles away. The Manistee River is within 3 miles where the local canoe livery has everything from canoes to kayaks to inflatables for rent and they will take you up river as far as you would like, and your trip will end there within 3 miles from Camp Stonewood.

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Julia is an amazingly kind and warm host. Her property is beautiful and peaceful with great vibes. We had a great time chatting with her about life, animals, farmland, and gardening! Would absolutely stay again.
We stayed one night just to getaway on an adventure. This was the perfect spot! It was very peaceful! We seen a deer running really close to us and that was really neat! The host was very friendly and communicated quickly and efficiently. I’d highly recommend! Just bring bug spray!!!
First time camping with our rescue
We were worried about the weather being an issue because our dog is not socialized well and can be timid… We are so glad that we decided to go! The campsite was in a beautiful area that was remote, and perfect for our excitable pup. The 2 month old goat was to die for! Also the host Julia was super helpful and sweet, we loved being able to hear more about her animals, plants on the property, and her plans for the different projects and camping experiences. We can’t wait to come back again!
Laid back and peaceful
Amazing property! Quiet and peaceful and wild feeling. We saw grouse, deer, and turkey and heard coyotes at night. Sites were awesome snd Julia was super cool! Would definitely come back and recommend!
Beautiful secluded, with stars
Beautiful site with room to roam. Host was very polite, nice, friendly, respectful, socially conscious of safety concerns with distancing and helpful. There were chickens, goats and a horse on the property which were fun additions to the experience. Having fresh eggs in the mornings after camping under the Michigan stars was delicious and energizing for a day of hiking! The fire ring for the camp fire was helpful as well! We will return. Trail to site was accessable to small Sudan in autumn months also helpful, fun surprise, although came prepared to walk it.
My daughter and I had a great weekend at Julia’s place. It is a great location for exploring surrounding towns, bike riding, and hiking.
Julia was especially giving of her time sharing her ranch with my daughter.
Overall, a fantastic experience.
We have stayed at many hipcamps but I must say this is #1 in our book!
1st of all, this was a VERY last minute booking since we were not planning to stay in the area another night. Julie was so helpful and accommodating for our last minute need.
Upon arrival, we were met by Julia and family (including their horse) and felt very welcomed. She has a beautiful stone house in the front.
Julia then escorted us through the trees behind the house on a curvy tree-lined path which opened to a clearing with a fire ring. Very private and secluded.
She then brought us some firewood.
I cannot express in words how BEAUTIFUL this camping spot was. I have so many pictures but I just couldn't capture the essence of this site. This is exactly what I envision a secluded primitive camping experience to be.
There are many places to set up your tent.
There is an abundance of wildlife here to enjoy.
I slept very well here.
In the morning, we were able to see the goats and chickens. Julia's dog was so gentle and loving with my daughter.
We will definitely be back to stay longer the next time so we can enjoy this spot to the fullest!
You won't find a more beautiful, secluded site than this! With a sweet and accommodating host!!
We really enjoyed staying at Camp Stonewood Ranch! The property is so beautiful and peaceful. It stormed a bit the evening we stayed, which made for some really pretty fog in the morning to wake up to. Outside of the coyotes at night and the rooster in the morning (both of which we loved to hear) it was very quiet. Julia was a wonderful host and invited our son up to give the horses treats. We visited for a bit and had some great conversations. If you camp here, please give Anna a pet for us!
