After staying here in the Pond Cabin at Bear Tree Homestead, writer Andrew Stark wrote up a lovely article and Midwest Living Magazine. In May/June 2020, the article was titled "A Wild and Watery Getaway to Marquette Michigan." The Pond Cabin is the most private cabin we offer. It is off-grid and sits on the far end of the pond. There is no electricity or running water.
Firewood to heat the cabin is provided in colder months. Water is available, and there is a 2 burner gas stove for cooking and a private fire pit with a grate. A front porch overlooks the pond and offers a great place to sit even on a rainy day and enjoy a book.
The rustic Pond Cabin can sleep 4 people. A fold-out sofa bed and full-size mattress are in the small low ceiling loft, accessed by the ladder. This space is tight, a steep ladder accesses no rails, and it can be very warm in the summer. Clean sheets, blankets, and pillows will be provided, but you will need to make up the beds. The pond cabin is easily accessible with its own driveway and parking for 2-3 vehicles. It is a short walk to our cabin area. We have a "Host" sign on our front porch if you need to get more water or find us. A tent can be set up next to this cabin very easily.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING A RESERVATION. This is a working homestead, and our cabins are rustic. We have lots of sounds around our homestead, including chain saws, dogs, sheep ducks, and chickens, as well as a couple of roasters, so you will most likely hear some charming farm sounds. Our dogs are friendly, but they do bark, especially when people come and go. We also have neighbors, and their dogs seem to think this is the place to be, so you may encounter their dogs as well. On a scarce occasion, our neighbors may run a generator or have a night party. The cabins may have spiders and even mice, but we do our best to take precautions before your arrival.
The Homestead is only 8 miles from downtown Marquette, but the last 2 miles are trail roads and can be difficult to travel in the winter and spring thaw. We recommend a 4 wheel or all-wheel drive during these times.
Refunds will not be considered for mismanaged expectations, and any concerns can always be addressed with your host directly.
We do accept a 2-day minimum stay, and you will find a sheet of information in the cabin and instructions on how things work.
We no longer require a meet and greet, but our paths will hopefully cross while you are on the property. You can text or call with any questions you may have during your stay or stop by our home.

The Pond Cabin was really nice, and really really quiet. Had one chilly night but stocked firewood was ready to make for all things comfy. Getting there is a challenge, make sure you have all the coordinates and have reviewed the area before trying to get there.
Was the absolute perfect getaway. I couldn’t say enough about what a fantastic time we had in the beautiful cabin. Just bring clothes and food!

The cabin is amazing. We loved the quiet getaway in the secluded woods. The homestead is nothing less than amazing as well. Nice trail at the end of their driveway to hike to hogback mountain was very cool as well. The highland cattle were too cool. Peaceful and inspiring. Thank you guys so much
We had a fantastic time at the Pond Cabin, would definitely recommend to anyone who loves the outdoors!
Very tranquil cabin which we deeply enjoyed for a long weekend with our dog. Host is extremely helpful. Our only disappointment was our stay wasn't long enough.
We loved the cabin. It was well stocked to fit our needs. The views were outstanding and the cows were adorable. Very private area, but close to town.
Bear Pond was such a lovely experience. Jill and Nick are wonderful hosts and I truly appreciate their hospitality and their creative architecture. The trail was great to Hogback Mountian. It was lovely snowshoeing.
Jill and Nick were outstanding hosts with an adorable setup. Its proximity to the NCT was perfect for our snowshoe adventure up Hogback. It feels so secluded, yet Marquette is a quick drive away. The roads got a little dicey after the ice storm, but our hosts went above and beyond to help us out.
This place is better than photos. We stayed for presidents weekend, the cabin was warm and cozy and had everything we needed. I brought a bunch of supplies just in case and didn’t use any of it. Close enough to Marquette to get into town if you wanted to, about 15-20 mins (we went to see the dog sleds come in for the UP200!) but so so incredibly secluded. Jill is a very gracious and helpful host, and her homemade cookies are even better than the reviews. We have already booked a return trip for the summer!

So glad you enjoyed your extended weekend at the Pond Cabin. Thank you for renting a 4 wheel drive the spring thaw has really taken a toll on the road this past couple of weeks. You left the cabin nice and tidy thank you for that. Sorry, we did not get a chance to meet you but hopefully, you can come back.
