Enjoy a unique camping experience on the edge of 20 acres of rolling sand dunes at the famed Desert of Maine! Just 8 minutes from the famous LL Bean flagship store and the outlet shops of Freeport, 20 minutes to downtown Portland, and close to all that mid-coast Maine has to offer, this quiet, secluded campground changed ownership in 2019 and has been completely renovated. Featuring a luxurious bath house, spacious sites, new water/electric infrastructure, a self-serve camp store open 24x7, lawn games, and thoughtful touches throughout, this campground is a hidden gem. There are 27 sites overall. NOTE: When you book, we try to assign you to your chosen site, but since Hipcamp doesn't sync with our reservation software, we assign the best available site at the time of booking.
Every site at this campground is great for tent camping, but these sites can also accommodate small RVs (with the exception of sites 21 and 24). We limit RVs to vans, tear drops, pop-ups, truck campers, and small travel trailers. Anything under 18' should be fine, but travel trailers will only fit in a few of our sites. Every site has water and electricity and each is equipped with a fire ring (w/ integrated grill) and a picnic table. Campground guests enjoy 15% off admission to the Desert of Maine where they can learn about the fascinating history of the Desert and the quirky characters that have made it an iconic and beloved tourist destination for nearly 100 years. There are self-guided tours for history and science buffs, a one-of-a-kind natural playground, an imaginative labyrinth called “Gemstone Village” for kids, a Fossil Dig experience, a 1924 Fort Model T photo opp, a new mini golf course (opening June 2022), a snack bar serving ice cream, kielbasa, kettle corn, and more, and charming Gift Shop.

The Desert of Maine campground is AWESOME! Wooded sites, amazing bathhouse, hot showers, and cool activities. We had water and electric at our site which was a pleasant surprise. The staff was super nice and the campers were friendly as well. The campground also offered A-frame structures with a single bed, private toilet and sink - nice enough to be called a rustic hotel room. Campground was quiet at night.

The camp worked well after a long day riding. Clean and lots of amenities. Cant wait to see it when all the building is done.
Very nice and convenient, and clea
Loved it very nice and can’t wait for the rest of the upgrades

Good variety of campsite options, excellent amenities, and very cool to get to check out the desert at night and stargaze
This was just the place to start off our camping season! The facilities were amazingly well taken care of. My two boys (9 & 5) had a blast playing giant jenga and the ring game as well as exploring and playing in the desert and going on “adventures” at the playground. Make sure to try the blueberry sorbet- it was great! The campground was quiet and the the sites were level.
Desert of Maine Campground is a unique spot, with great facilities and campsites with ample room and privacy. Work is still being done in this spot, but it’s excellent even now. I’d love to visit again in a year or two when all the planned facilities are fully developed!
The campground was very nice and very clean! We ran into Doug on our last night there and he was super friendly! Away from town but close enough to town to go explore. Small kiosk that had every thing you needed; ice, snacks, drinks, and really cool mugs. Showers and bathrooms were immaculate!
