Streife translated from Norwegian means roam. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right(“allemannsretten”) is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned areas. In our travels to Norway, we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So, we searched...and searched....and searched some more. Then we found what would become camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the hills of Rumford Maine. With a nearby brook, pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right. The rules of this law are simple. Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and other surroundings. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace. You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, for the night anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and caravans. If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote areas. Well, we've taken care of all those Allemannsretten rules for you. We invite you to our small part of the world and encourage you to exercise your right to roam. Backcountry Camping
Quiet, but buggy.
Rough road getting to camp. I was in a lifted cross-over fitted for trail riding and was fine. Camp was buggy from all the rain. The platform was kinda in a bog. My pup-style tent had to be pitched off of the gravel parking area, not ideal but worked. Bring bug spray and bug deterrent candles / zappers...you get the idea.

Quiet retreat
My family loved camping at Adrian and Tara's tent site. We came in late at night, Tara was very responsive and helped navigate us to the site. We brought our dog, she was so happy to run off leash the entire stay! Definitely a great location, and we plan to come back again!

Backcountry Camping
The site was beautiful and very secluded which is very nice when you want privacy to enjoy nature at its best. The clear sky at night was breathtaking and the spaced that was cleared so it was a nice attribute to the camp site. Our pups loved being outdoors and the brook was a nice little additive to the ups and downs when walking around. If you love the rural parts of camping then take full advantage of this camp site. The owners are super responsive and very caring to the concerns of their guests. They have very descriptive details to get in and out so we would get there safely especially since we arrived at nightfall. It does take an SUV or Truck made for off roofing do make sure to plan for it. Our SUV faired out ok and it was a fun adventure all around. But honestly it was truly a great experience for the books on our end!

Backcountry camping in September!
Backcountry camping on Adrian and Tara’s land was great! The spot was secluded and private, in a very pretty clearing full of ferns and surrounded by trees. Tara messaged with very clear directions for finding the site and we had no trouble at all. The listing is very accurate - which is great because we came well prepared. There is a fire ring (nice touch) and not much else .. so we were glad we brought plenty of water, a folding table and luggable loo camping toilet. The location was really convenient to Sunday River and Grafton Notch state park … plus the pad locked gate at the entrance gave us that extra bit of peace of mind about leaving our stuff there all day while we went out exploring. There are a couple of other small camps along the dirt road but for the most part we didn’t see or hear another soul while at the site … exactly what we were looking for. Our 11 year old Brittany spaniel also had a wonderful time chasing crickets and smells all around the camp site and we didn’t feel at all nervous about letting him wander. Thanks Adrian and Tara for being such wonderful hosts and for listing on hip camp! We’d love to come back (especially when you put the tent platform in!!)
