Situated on 20 acres in the Woods of Rumford, ME come enjoy a forested campsite with access to nearby stream and pond. Fish, kayak, snowshoe, hike or just relax. 20 minutes from Sunday River Ski area, 25 Minutes from Black Mtn. Ski area and even closer to Rumford's White Cap Mtn. for nice backcountry ski lines. Streife translated from Norwegian means roam. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right “allemannsretten” is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned areas.

In our travels to Norway we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So we searched...and searched.....and searched some more. Then we found what would become Camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the western hills of Rumford, Maine. With a private brook, nearby pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right.

The rules of this law are simple. Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and surrounding areas. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace.

You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of a 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and caravans.

If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote areas.

Well we've taken care of all the Allemannsretten rules for you.

We invite you to our small part of the world, and encourage you to exercise your right to roam.

Beautiful spot, absolutely loved it! Great hosts, sent directions well ahead of time which were easy to follow. We were in a truck and did use 4WD to get into the location. It's a nice cleared out spot and does have a fire pit upon entering. We chose to stay on the further side as the ground seemed to be more flat and better suited for our larger tent. So peaceful and quiet except for the occasional passing turkeys:) There's a pond just down the road, which was a beautiful walk this time of year. Our dogs enjoyed it, we loved it and we would definitely go back!

This is a great spot, yes it was a little difficult to find.. but it was also dark out when we got there. A quick phone call and we arrived no problem to the site. Adrian was super helpful. We created a little fire pit with rocks because there wasn't one.. hope that's alright! LOVE the space for the dogs. Nice walk up to the top of the road and you get a great view! The pond was perfect we took out 3 kayaks and explored a couple hours. I'd suggest staying here, quiet & quaint.

The fire pit you started made my day! Thank you making it better than when you left it.

This was a great spot. Adrian and Tara were super helpful and extremely available! The spot was a little tricky to find but I was given detailed instructions and found it with only a little trouble (to be fair, it was dark by the time I got there) and could have been a little better marked. The road to the site is pretty rough, 4WD definitely needed and wished I was driving a truck rather than my high-clearance SUV. Additionally, the site was super primitive— no picnic table, fire ring, or predetermined camp spot, which I didn’t mind, but this is definitely not for those expecting a drive-in front country spot. Overall a lovely place to camp with great hosts, and a fantastic location for hiking in the White Mountains or exploring the Bethel area!

Riley Thanks for staying with us and for the honest review. We've learned that a lot of new campers are arriving in the dark so we are going to try and better mark the location with reflectors. We plan on making some improvements for next season such as a fire ring. Glad you liked the site overall and please come back any time!!!

Site was a little hard to find (which is half the point of camping and it was our fauly we arrived at 1am) but was in a BEAUTIFUL location in the woods . Probably not accessable by car but our Explorer packed heavy did just fine. The hosts were amazing and contacted me a head of time with directions and helpful info. Will definitely be coming back again!

We loved our time in the backcountry! It was nice and private and even though it rained we loved sitting and looking at the beautiful trees and hearing the cool bird sounds. We went down to the creek in between the rain and it was such a peaceful spot. Would definitely recommend!!!

This is a great spot in the woods with lots of peace and quiet. Adrian was a fantastic host. He sent detailed directions to the location well before my visit and was available to answer some questions I had as I arrived. I have a 2WD SUV and reached this spot with absolutely no problems, but the access road is a little rough and probably not something I'd try in a large RV. But, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to experience the backcountry of Maine.
