The camp is located on a large horse shoe bend of the Amite River: Pitch a tent, Fish, Boat, ATV trails, campfires, electric, water, WIFI. We're about 10 minutes to Interstate 10 and 4.7 miles to a convenience store. We get great sky views at night when it's clear. We're close to the city, but really off the beaten path in some of the last real woods in E. Baton Rouge.

The road on the horse shoe of the Amite River is about a mile long.
There is a landing across the street about a hundred feet down.
You can fish the lake. Throw a line in the river if you're feeling lucky.
I've got some trails. You'll have to sign a waiver to ride on the property.
There is an alligator in the lake. I've never seen it on the land in three years.

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Horse Shoe Bend is a great place to experience southern Louisiana's unique river and bayou-shaped landscape. First, the drive-in to the Baton Rogue-area via the Afatchalaya Basin Bridge is something you can only experience in Louisiana. Do it.
Once you arrive you can camp near the pond next to Damon's stilt cabin or, as we did, near the fire pit at the entrance to the property. The site offers plenty of shade under the massive trees even in July. The lot is situated right next to a pond and a few hundred feet from an Amite River boat launch.
A walk along Horseshoe Bend will give you a tour of the unique architecture that allows residents to live near the wild rivers. Next time we come through we could see ourselves staying the night and then launching our canoe from the Amite landing toward Lake Maurepas and beyond.
Nice spot, ask ahead about privacy!
Damon was fine. He had a hobo friend of his staying there who actually walked up on my daughter trying to pop a squat. She laughed but was very embarrassed. The hobo friend was camping in a tent as well, so the 1 group minimum is false. The hipcamp site also said there were trash bins and bathrooms available, both are false! We camped at his backdoor, which was “ok” but his friends dog kept interrupting our stay by getting into our fishing zone and tackle. Damon, himself, was a great host, he even offered us coffee on Saturday morning. I do not wish to take my kids camping and deal with conspiracy theorist hippies when I wish to enjoy the outdoors though. Damon is not the one I complain about.
Unfortunately, just before our stay, Damon's property was severely flooded from storm surge in the local river. Damon was quick to let us know the situation, and was very understanding if we wanted to change our plans. Luckily, his property drained quickly and we were able to find a nice dry piece of land to camp for the night. Our host's dogs were very friendly, as were the neighbors we met. There was plenty of dry wood around for our campfire too. This is not a glamping resort; but if you are comfortable finding and setting up your camp it's a great place for some bayou hospitality.
This made for a fairly easy and peaceful overnight stop while on a road trip through the south. The property could use a little tidying up to feel more inviting, but otherwise safe and serene. Damon was responsive and made sure I had what I needed.
