The area surrounding Long Lake has long been a recreational hub for the residents of New Auburn, dating back to the construction of the dam and weir in 1927. In the early 1930s, Margaret M. Campbell generously conveyed land to Chippewa County for public park use, ensuring it would remain a space for community enjoyment. Arnt Erickson, a notable figure in Chippewa County, played a crucial role in this development, consenting to the land's transfer despite holding a mortgage lien. The park is named in honor of two influential community leaders: Arnt Erickson and John A. Morris. Morris, a successful businessman and long-time resident of Chippewa Falls, also contributed significantly to the county's civic improvements, including the establishment of the County Park System.
