Gilles Family Dairy &amp; Woodland

Wonderful get away! This place is so peaceful and a beautiful setting. We will return each year. It’s camping but with a wonderful bed and living room for reading, drawing and a dvd in the evening. There are so many thoughtful touches that make rough it easy. This place is HIGHLY recommended! Joan and Mike are very kind and the cows are so cute!

Happy Hilltop Queen camping

We loved taking our 5 yr old grandson here for his first camping trip. Clean and comfortable beds and beautiful woodland and so many trails right by the Hilltop Queen! We had breakfast on the deck. Wonderfully kept up bathrooms. Mike and Joan are great hosts

We loved camping at the round mound ! Secluded but easy to get to. Mike and Joan were great hosts providing us with whatever we needed to be successful campers. They even let us and our son get to watch the cows get milked and pet all the calves. The trails and forest playground were just the cherry on top to a great site. Would recommend to anyone who wants to watch their kids fall in love with the outdoors.

Wonderful experience

We enjoyed camping here so much. The hosts are great, the place is clean and organized, we will definitely come back!! The sky at night is the most beautiful sky we ever saw, just wow!

Beautiful Site, Helpful Hosts

HILLTOP QUEEN

Mike and Joan were phenomenal hosts. Joan greeted us, provided a detailed map of the property and trails, and personally led us to our site. Mike later stopped by to introduce himself, which was thoughtful and made us feel welcome. The amenities struck a great balance between immersion and convenience. We appreciated the gray water sink, cooking grate over the fire area, covered firewood, on site garbage/recycling, and outhouse. Note that there isn't a traditional fire pit, only the setup shown in the photos. The outhouse is about 10 steps from the boat, surprisingly spacious, and uses a composting system with sawdust provided after each use. There was also a child potty seat available which is one less thing for a family of littles to pack! The site requires a short walk down a mowed hill. Access is through the hosts' property, so there isn't a separate private entrance. You can come and go, but it's easiest to arrive with everything you'll need. Our 8-year-old and two dogs loved the space. The site felt private, we enjoyed the nature playground and driving the boat, and the cliff-top location was beautiful. It was breezy during our stay and we encountered very few mosquitoes. One drawback was that the boat felt damp and musty. We found a few dead bugs and some mouse droppings, which didn't bother us much, but the musty smell transferred to our clothing and bedding and required thorough washing once we returned home.

We had a perfect weekend at the Round Mound Campsite. Mike & Joan have thoughtfully put together the site with a clean bathroom, drinking water, firewood, cooking stove and multiple options to set up a tent. Lots of trails, heard coyotes and owls every night along with cows. Secluded and quiet. Already talking about a trip back!

A magical place

A truly beautiful hideout in the woods. Mike met us when we arrived and lead us down a magical path in our 4x4 to the cabin - he prepared everything so it was ready for us. The trails are a highlight which are so much fun to explore. In short - if you need to escape from the pace of modern life this is a gem. Thank you Mike for making such a special place to share.

We'll be back!

We had such a wonderful two night stay down in the valley woods at the Wooden Tent. The site has everything you need and nothing you don't. Lovely trails area that feels perfectly secluded. Mike was so helpful. We'll be back!

SUCH a lovely site in the valley

My husband and I camped here two nights this spring, and it was so lovely! No near neighbors, all the calming nature sounds, kind hosts, a very nice composting toilet that did not smell at all (which is huge to me), a well-ventilated A-frame cabin, and plenty of space to explore on the trails on site. I would give this camp 6 stars if I could. Side note: do take the "vehicles with AWD and 6 inches of clearance" seriously! The drive down would be pretty impossible otherwise

First it is very easy to get to the farm. Directions are easy to follow. Once you get there you find the kindest welcome and many helpful directions on activities and getting around on their beautiful land. Then, you are left to your own lodging choice both quiet and private. The map and signs for hiking are equivalent to or better than my state park experiences. A night time fire is easy to build and for me, sleeping in the Wooden Tent was just what I wanted and with more space than I thought I would get. If you are wishing for a change of pace and scenery, this is your place. I look forward to returning.

A special escape

This is such a gem of a place! We booked last minute and had a really warm welcome to the farm by Mike. Definitely believe him about the 4WD and arriving before dark being needed going down to the cabin! Being early spring, everything was just starting to turn a little green and it was still quite chilly at night and Mike had the wood stove going when we arrived :) Everything at this site is so well thought out and JUST enough of what you need. It is so thoughtful and appreciated that they provided ample drinking water and firewood. I love all of the whimsical touches of the property and trails. Looking forward to coming back to see it in another season as well!

Hidden Gem

We had the most wonderful experience staying at this Hipcamp! From the moment we arrived, it felt special. The property is a beautiful wooded paradise, and the rustic cabin is tucked perfectly into the trees. When we arrived, we were greeted by the kindest host who showed us where to park and gave us a map of the trails through the gorgeous woods. He walked us through the lay of the land and gave us a few helpful tips so we could make the most of our stay. We loaded all of our supplies for the weekend into his tractor, and he led us down to the absolute cutest little cabin you could imagine. We didn’t have to worry about lugging our camping gear. The cabin had a cozy wood burning stove, and they supplied more firewood than we could possibly need for the whole weekend. The out house was a compost toilet and was so nice and very clean. Everything about the place felt thoughtfully cared for. We brought our dogs with us, and they absolutely loved exploring the trails and open wooded space. It was the perfect place to let them enjoy nature right along with us. We spent our time exploring the trails and soaking in the peaceful energy of the land. It was truly a special place to reconnect to nature and relax. Our hosts, Mike and Joan, were incredibly welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed, including all the fresh water we could want. This place is easily a 20 out of 10. We felt so welcomed and can’t recommend it enough. We will absolutely be back!

Loved our stay

Mike and Joan thought of everything. It was a perfect short stay for us. We appreciated the kindness shown to us and the ride to and from the site. We had our own little spot in nature with everything we needed. Campfires were so easy with the setup provided. Loved the presence of drinking water and wash up water. The compost toilet bathroom was clean and perfect. I’d come back in a heartbeat. Remember to bring warm sleeping bags or blankets if you are headed there in the fall!

Tent camping was next level at the round mound site. The site was beautiful, nice clearing to watch meteors and counter for cooking. The commode is spotless. The trails were very nice with little gems hidden throughout.

Remote Peaceful Camping

We loved our weekend deep in the woods staying in the Wooden Tent. Mike was great to work with and guided us right to the site and gave us a map of the trails to hike on. This is such a cool site and Mike and Joan's willingness to share their land with others. We had a few rain showers while trying to set up and the wooden tent was bone dry inside! The site has firewood, your own saw dust out house, garbage/ recycling, wash water, drinking water, chairs around the fire/ cooking area, they have literally thought of everything. Make sure if you visit you bring plenty of lights its dark dark that deep in the woods. It also seems 4-5 degrees cooler being that deep in the woods. We also didn't have any mosquitoes when we visitied mid September. At night you could hear owls and coyotes off in the distance. We did not see a single other person while camping and the few other sites are far away from each other so the nature sounds can be heard all day and night! We will 100% stay here again in the future. I will never camp at a regular camp site with neighbors again after this experience! Thanks again Mike and Joan for sharing your land and a great/ cool experience.

Round Mound is an excellent campsite. Beautiful views, very private, and Mike and Joan and done a wonderful job taking care of all the little things to make it great (very nice and clean outhouse, firewood, trail map, drinking water, etc.) Mike greeted us and took us to the site - he was helpful, friendly and very accommodating. I highly recommend staying with Mike and Joan!

Such a cool and unique spot!! How often do you have the chance to stay in an old boat rescued from the bottom of The Mississippi. Mike was very nice and showed us around the property. It had everything we needed, firewood, water, chairs. And the outhouse was the cleanest one I’ve ever been in. Definitely would recommend!

Wish we could have stayed longer!

Miek and Joan were extremely accommodating with our stay. First, there was rain in the forecast so they upgraded us to the Hilltop Queen, which was lovely! I was very impressed with the setup (of all the sites, we took a walk around) and the outhouse is the BEST I've seen on hipcamp (and there have been other great ones!). Fire pits, water, and refuse setup made all aspects of enjoying the site easy. There was no "oh this is hard bc we are camping", just pure enjoyment. The trails were lovely and the map was much appreciated. We wish we could have gotten to explore more, but our dog got sick and we headed home early. Mike was really understanding and refunded us our unused night, which we were surprised by, because it was certainly not expected/necessary by our point of view. Again, wish we could have fulfilled our stay and enjoyed another day, but hopefully we will be able to stop by again.

This was our third time back to the Gilles Family Dairy & Woodland, and our second stay at Rock Bottom Cabin. We brought friends with us this time, as we knew they'd love it. The site is down into a valley, surrounded by hillsides full of trees. It is very spacious and private. The grill set up for cooking over the fire was great, especially for a group. There is wood on site for the fire. Picnic table is extra large. There is a large awning on the front of the cabin, which came in handy when we had rain one evening, and still wanted to be outside. Mike and Joan are gracious hosts who clearly care for their property. This can be seen through communication, how well thought out the sites are, and how the trails on the property are cared for. I have no doubt we will visit again in the future.

Motocamping friendly!

The whole experience was nothing but GREAT! We were motocamping and the site was easy to get to on our bikes had everything we needed. They think of everything a camper may need in terms of wood for cooking and campfire to water for both washing and drinking plus a nice sink area if you had dishes to wash. The outhouse is clean. Would highly recommend this place to others, the host were also very nice and made sure our stay was good.

I love staying at Gilles dairy and woodland! Round mound campsite was PERFECT, the trails were beautiful and I was so pleased to be able to camp ing my hammock without worrying about hurting any of their beautiful treees. They have a perfect set up of 2 large posts the perfect distance for hammocking at this site!! I definitely want to return and bring friends!
