Materfield | Women’s Wooded Riverland Camping

Welcome to Materfield, a primitive, women-centered woodland camping retreat nestled on 15 wooded acres in a picturesque river valley in Western Wisconsin’s farm country Materfield was thoughtfully created for women** who want to spend time outdoors independently while enjoying the added comfort of knowing other women may be camping nearby. With just four campsites, the campground is intentionally small, creating opportunities for both solitude and connection. Each campsite occupies its own woodland clearing beneath mature trees, with natural ravines and vegetation providing separation while keeping the sites within a comfortable distance. Whether you spend the evening around the communal campfire or retreat to your own campsite, there's space for both. Here, the pace is slower and ways to interact with nature abound. Wander tended paths around the perimeter of the property, practice forest bathing, relax in a hammock with a good book, watch for deer, birds, butterflies, and native wildflowers, or cool off in the crisp, spring-fed river just a short walk from your campsite. The sandy-bottom river is typically clear and perfect for wading or enjoying a leisurely tubing float along the entire northern border before walking back to do it again. Materfield is intentionally simple, allowing the landscape to remain the centerpiece. We provide the essentials for a comfortable stay, including portable restrooms, potable well water (hand pump, BYO containers), designated parking, wheelbarrow/cart to transport your gear, marked and mowed walking paths, a communal campfire gathering area, and tube rentals. The campground sits within a beautiful rural valley where woodlands and working family farms have existed side by side for generations. Along with birdsong, frogs, and the sounds of the trees, you may experience the sights and smells of tractors, livestock, or other seasonal farm activity. We see this as part of the authentic character of the landscape and the community that cares for it. As Materfield grows, we look forward to offering workshops that celebrate nature, traditional skills, and the self- sufficiency of rural life. Materfield is best suited for campers who appreciate a simple primitive outdoor experience. There is no electricity, no showers, limited cell service, and no RV camping—just an immersive nature experience, tree canopy, peaceful walks, a beautiful river, and the opportunity to unplug for a while. Whether you're planning a solo retreat or inviting friends to reserve neighboring campsites, Materfield offers a different kind of camping experience: the freedom of having your own space with the comfort of sharing the woods with a small community of women. Camp solo together. **Materfield welcomes all women, regardless of gender assigned at birth, as well as transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive individuals who feel comfortable in a women-centered camping environment. We ask all guests to respect our community guidelines and help us maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful space for everyone.

Goldenseal

Booked 1 time
Tent site · Sleeps 4
Our campsites are tucked along a wooded hillside above the river, connected by a natural footpath that winds through mature trees, native woodland plants, and fern-covered ravines. Each site is set in its own cleared space with a view toward the water—some more open, some softened by the summer canopy. This is a shared campground setting, so neighboring tents may be visible, but each site has its own distinct feel within the landscape. Closest to the communal campfire area and one of the easiest sites to access, Goldenseal is a great fit for campers who want to stay near the heart of camp while still sleeping under the trees. This site has the clearest river view of the four, with a beautiful overlook from the hillside and easy access to the main footpath. Expect filtered shade, a lush woodland setting, and the gentle sound of the river below.

Wood Nettle Wood Nettle lies farther down the path, where the hillside feels a little quieter and more enveloped by the woods. Set in a clearing among the trees, this site is shaped by the same fern-covered ravines and sloping terrain that define the property, with glimpses of the river through the canopy. It’s a good fit for campers who want a more tucked-away feel while still remaining part of the shared campground.

Wild Ginger Wild Ginger is the farthest of the four sites from the main campfire area, giving it the most removed feel while still staying connected by the same woodland path. Nestled into the hillside among mature trees and native plants, it looks toward the river through the summer canopy and sits near the quieter end of camp. It’s ideal for campers who want the most peaceful setting of the four without being fully isolated.

Tucked among the trees with a view toward the river, it feels slightly more removed from the campfire area while still being an easy walk to shared amenities. The surrounding woodland, ravines, and native understory give this site a peaceful, tucked-into-nature feel.
