Gesundheit! resides on a 320-acre pristine tract of farm + mountain land in rural West Virginia with gardens, meadows, creeks, waterfalls, a lake, clean air + water. We have more than two miles of trails through a beautiful hardwood forest ensuring your stay will be spent in close proximity to nature. Campsites are equipped with fire rings, access to clean drinking water, an outdoor shower + a composting toilet just a short walk from the sites. We offer fishing, canoeing, hiking, guided hikes, plant + mushroom walks, guided tours of the Gesundheit property, buildings, plus much more. We also grow many seasonal vegetables that are available for purchase during your stay. Ask us about availability when booking! The Gesundheit! Institute was founded by Patch Adams, M.D. + continues to function as a nonprofit focused on community health initiatives. We host many educational workshops throughout the year so make sure you check out upcoming events on our website at patchadams.org ! The beautiful Greenbrier River (the location of our favorite swimming hole) is a 5 minute drive down Locust Creek Rd + a 2 minute drive to the historic Locust Creek covered bridge. The small town of Hillsboro (birthplace of Nobel Prize winning author Pearl S. Buck) is 5 miles away with a restaurant (The Hillsboro Public House) + two gas stations. We are surrounded by the Monongahela National Forest with many state parks available less than a 15 minute drive from the property. There are many remarkable places to see while you're visiting; Cranberry Wilderness area, Watoga State Park, Bear Town State Park, Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, the Highland Scenic Highway + a little further North up 219 is Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort; a favorite for skiing + snowboarding, mountain biking, music (4848 Festival) + many other outdoor activities!

Place was very unappealing almost junky. No signage or folks to help. They did not have working Internet as stated Never responded to communications. Very disappointed

My wife and I tent camped for a few nights. The site surrounded by mountains is beautiful and peaceful. Ducks and geese in the lake. An absolutely stunning waterfall just a 5 minute walk away. A meandering hillside trail perfectly shaded and teaming with mushrooms, deer, rabbits, and other wildlife. Several very friendly dogs also paid us a visit. This restorative retreat was exactly what we didn’t know we needed. Can’t wait to introduce the kids to this gem. The surrounding area was also a treat, with the Beartown boardwalk trail, the Greenbrier river where we went swimming everyday at the pebble covered beach. The Amish farm market where we had breakfast Saturday morning and so so much more. We honestly can’t wait to go back. If I could post pictures in this review I would.

We had a great time! Holly and her husband were super kind and did the best they could to make our time enjoyable. Nice swimming hole, waterfall and hiking. Definitely very rustic camping. The restroom and shower are a little walk but not bad. Take a tour and learn the history of the property because it’s pretty cool and explains a lot.

LOVED the quiet nature of the Gesundheit Institute. We were welcomed by an individual who lives on the land. It was so peaceful, and we were free to roam the area without interruption. Perfect disconnect from the hustle, bustle, and electronic interruptions of the world.

It was a good place to stay! We didn’t wander to the art institute but seeing the old firetruck was cool and the polka dot van! Quiet place to stay.

Peaceful & Beautiful, perfect getaway spot!! We enjoyed camping amazing night sky, short hike to a mini waterfall!! Over-all It’s a perfect quiet place :) We had Awesome views time, looking forward to coming again…

Another Gesundheit trip in the books! It was very quiet and peaceful trip. Our hosts were as friendly and accommodating as ever. We are hoping to squeeze in another visit before winter and are looking forward to visiting more often in the spring.

Place was run down/buildings falling down , nothing to see and the host is not responsive. Don’t waste your time, so many other great places to see in WV.

Toilet and sink filthy, I don't know how host can claim adherence to COVID hygiene standards. No host available to remedy that. Dangerously rotting boardwalk over marshy area to access trails to waterfalls. Price too high for what is offered (for $45/night you can get state park camping with electric and a clean bathhouse. For $15/night you can get national forest primitive sites with maintained pit toilets). Gesundheit is a beautiful place and could be a great place to camp but the hosts are not prepared to make it safe or hygienic for the public.

Amazing place to camp for a few days. The site teams with goats, ducks, chickens and dog. Lots od trails to discover. Waterfall and swimming holes! The host were awesome.

Another night under the stars

Lovely second visit! I was one of three campers in the meadow…my next door neighbors were two goats! It was a quick stop but I’m looking forward to bringing my oldest child to visit in a few weeks. Thanks again, Oak and Sparkle! (I’ll pick up my tent pole next time)

--The Gesundheit Institute is a special place to camp and soothe your soul in the rural hills of West Virginia. The property is beautiful, the architecture is eclectic and whimsical, and the vibe is something like the late 60's to early-70's when many young people sought a simpler lifestyle, truly cared about the environment, and tried to make the world a better place. --The campsites offer a fire ring and picnic table. There's potable water and an outdoor shower nearby. --There are two trails to explore. A short hike will take you to a nice waterfall. A longer hike takes you along a ridgetop...Both very peaceful. Beartown State Park is a short drive away and one of my "must-sees" with a boardwalk through some fascinating rock formations and crazy huge boulders. --Civil War buffs can visit the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. --Lewisburg, rated America's "Coolest Small Town, is about an hour away. Hillsboro, birthplace of author Pearl S. Buck, is about a 15-minute drive away and provided me with a strong phone signal. --Oak, his wife, and children are delightful and the rest of the residents and staff are super friendly. Beware that Oak has a good guard dog. She's not vicious, but she does her job and barks at strangers, so expect a noisy greeting whenever she's out and about.

The Gesundheit Institute was the first stop on my trip up the coast to Maine. I booked at Gesundheit so I could clear my head before the long trip. I’ve lived in WVa for most of my life and have never been. Now seemed to be the right time to visit and I’m thankful that I did! Upon check in, it was already clear that the pictures do not do Patch Adam’s Institution justice. This place has a magical quality. The caretakers, Sparkle and Oak, clearly put their heart and soul into Gesundheit. The campground was full when I was there (so I’d book ahead if I were you)…Sparkle and Oak were unfazed, welcoming and more than happy to give a tour, invited everyone into their home and gave us the full fun history! The landscape is beautiful and well planned out for visitors to enjoy (very fun hint: there are little wildflower and brush coves bushwhacked behind the camping meadow leading to a secret path to the pond). The waterfall is beautiful and serene but my favorite surprise was the wild mint growing through the stream below. I already have plans to come back here with my family so they can see why I’m so enchanted.

I loved camping here, very remote between the mountains away from the road, the sky was dark and full of stars, looking very pretty. Host was very welcoming, helped us with starting the fire. And the institute was very interesting and people visiting their were very welcoming too and amazing! Would camp here again!

This was a beautiful place to stay! Oak and his family were wonderful, friendly hosts - he even taught me how to make a proper fire! The fireflies at night were gorgeous.

Beautiful hikes with a waterfall 5 mins away, wonderful hosts Oak and his wife Sparkle were very accommodating and offered use of the canoe and fishing equipment on the lake. Awesome architecture on all of the buildings and the art in the barn is amazing. Thanks!!

A unique opportunity to stay at Gesundheit- I couldn’t pass it up. The site was along the edge of a meadow with great view. Vancamped over night and took a short hike to waterfall- WOW. Wish I had more time to stay and enjoy. Hosts were respi dive & helpful. Planning to come back in the summer.
