Overall it was fine for a night. Friendly host took time to chat with us. Shelter was cool, fire ban in effect though so no fires. The property is in scrub forest which, for some may be beautiful, but wasn’t really our vibe

This is more than a normal, boring campground. Below the surface there’s a lot going on here so this is a good destination for the curious. When Walt asks if you have any questions, ask.
I stayed during 94-degree heat. A burn ban was in effect, which I suspect is common for this dry area. Check before you book if that’s important to you. There was also a usable stove on the spot. There is a working shower with warm water, which is nice.
It was very, very quiet.

Very funky place. I like the showers. Quiet and peaceful. I didn't manage to find the water. I was in and out quite quickly, so it didn't matter. Walt was friendly

Second time camping here. Love the spot and the good energy. The surrounding area is also great for motorcycles, fishing, wine tasting and fairly convenient access to The Dalles and Hood River.
Walt was a good host and nice to chat with. Good amenities including toilet and fresh drinking water.

Quiet, pastoral and relaxing. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3-nights stay at the Herland Forest. Walt Patrick is a wonderful host and a true Practitioner and Believer of Sustainability. He even took us for a tour of his domesticated animals (sheep, lambs, goats and chickens)!

Beautiful forest and interesting property to explore. We car camped and had the entire Hipcamp space for ourselves. Great fall camping experience.

We enjoyed two quiet days camping at this peaceful spot and would return. We had the benefit of being the only ones camping there-- the experience might have been different if other people were camping there at the same time as there was only one picnic table. Our host, Walt, welcomed us and gave us interesting background on the intentional community at the site. The natural burial cemetery adjacent to the camping area was inspiring to see-- a lot of effort has gone into setting this up. We enjoyed hiking on the Klickatat Trail, which is < 10 minutes away.

Walt was excellent, calling us in advance of our arrival to give more detailed navigation instructions. He met us on the road to take us onto his property. The Windward Forest was beautiful and a great quiet place to camp. There was a giant fire pit which we enjoyed using and he provided firewood!

Camping at Windward Forest brings such peace and joy! This was our second time there and far from our last! Walt's generosity overflows and it's hard to not feel welcome. We'll be back soon!

My partner and I really enjoyed our weekend getaway at the Windward Co-op! Walt communicated very well with us and provided very clear instructions. The land is beautiful and you will have plenty to explore! This campground offers tranquil isolation, yet also has enough amenities that make a weekend camping trip fun for beginners and experts alike! I will definitely be camping here again as long as Walt will have us back!

I have already been recommending it to nearly everyone who will listen! Our weekend at The Windward Forest was magical, not just because of the meteor shower! The location between climate regions led to diverse vegetation and a cool spot during the recent heat wave. We felt warmth and welcomed by Walt, who shared a lot about the history of the land. We will be back to hear the rest of the story soon, bringing bunches with us, if all our friends who have now gotten excited tag along, too!

Super peaceful. Walt stopped shortly after my arrival and gave me a little rundown on the property, and the cool things they are doing to promote sustainable living.
Need to unplug? This is the place!
Can't wait to return when the fire danger has passed. I definitely want to sit around a fire at night in this place!

Walt was excellent at communicating and met up with us to show us our site. There was flat ground for our tent, trees for our hammock, and a picnic table to sit at. Everything we needed for a night in the gorge. The place was quiet and nobody else around! Highly recommend!

We enjoyed camping at this peaceful private spot and would return. We got the benefit of being the only ones there so I’m not sure what exactly the situation would look like with other groups. The natural burial cemetery was very inspiring to see. Recommend having a high clearance vehicle as there are gravel roads throughout the property that are worn. Well functioning showers, bathrooms, and drinkable water were a plus. Enjoy!

My wife and I loved tent camping at the Sustainability Research Coop and are already thinking about when we can schedule a time to return there. During the couple of days we were there we appreciated learning more about the Herland Forest and experiencing the tranquility of being out in nature. Having access to a hot shower and potable water in the woods was also a big plus! Walt was a wonderful host, and we enjoyed the many conversations we had with him. Her was also very responsive prior to our visit and provided very clear instructions for traveling to the property. Highly recommend!

Was a gorgeous spot. The shower was stellar. Love what they're doing with the land. Near the RV camping is a natural burial site. I imagine that has been an endeavor to establish. We will be back again sometime.

This place is a haven. I can’t put into words all the things I experienced / feel while camping at Herland Forest. I was the only camper and had the entire place to myself. The land here is special. I will definitely be back very soon :) thank you Walt for being so welcoming and friendly!

What a magnificent spot to stay, for so many reasons! If you're looking for a remote site in a beautifully diverse forest loaded with wildlife, quiet and a super attentive, knowledgeable host, reserve a stay here. The camping areas are spacious and secluded - none of the usual lineup of tent or RV sites you find in a typical campground.
And if you're interested in permaculture, sustainability and/or natural burial, you'll love getting to know about the myriad of projects underway at Herland Forest.

My friend and I both slept under the stars, me in a tent and she in the Adirondack structure. A great place to rest, be still and listen to the "sound" of silence, observe wildlife and the ever present miracles of nature.
Walt is a most gracious host and earth angel/steward. Having lived on the land for decades, he and a group of others are a shining example of living in communion, sustainably, with Mother Nature and her cycles. A walking "tour" of the forest (sacred grounds so consciously and lovingly tended) was beyond beautiful and deeply touching.

Well organized and generous hosts at Sustainability Research Co-op! We had the place to ourselves - acres of oak trees in every direction. Easy check in. Good infrastructure. Hot showers.

This place wasn't for us. We expected everything to be in full swing (just as the listing said it was - full showers, ample camping, firewood, etc.), but sadly the camp wasn't in full swing at all.
Here's a little advice for the owner. Even though it isn't camping season right now, do your part and update your listing to reflect the current state of the camp. And when someone orders firewood ahead of time, do your best to remember and have it ready for them when they arrive.

This was our second visit to Herland Forest, and i know I'll be back for a very long stay again in the future as I've selected my plot in their natural burial cemetery. Beautiful forest. Beautiful, peaceful stay.

Beautiful & quiet land. Walt was super responsive & helpful, he even came lead me to my campsite at 1030/11pm as my travel got a bit delayed. I wish I could have enjoyed the campsite a bit more but I arrived late & had to leave early.

This place is ideal for anyone who absolutely loves to be far away from civilization. It was the most quiet place I have ever been in, although our visit was very quick as we were passing through to another spot on a long road trip. I do have to say that the shower I had that night was the BEST shower of my life! Amazing after a long journey to walk into a peaceful forest and have your own private shower with beautifully strong and hot water pressure. Thanks, Walt, and best of luck on all your projects.
