Mystery Bay Inn

We were not able to stay at this site because a building there was on fire when we arrived. We had to flee to avoid all the fire trucks and ambulances. We heard that a man was seriously injured there. We sincerely hope the host is all right. We would like to ask HipCamp to refund our money due to this unusual circumstance. We do not ask that HipCamp publish this review, but we are filling it out because it is very difficult to figure out how to communicate with HipCamp Support. All I get is a chat bot.

It was Beyond horrible! There were no fire pits, no picnic tables, dusty, dirty, roads, junk everywhere, downed trees, Old, junk cars, and RVs. The bathroom was inside his personal house. This place should be shut down.

David is so nice and his property is beautiful. I think he has some work to do before actually being ready to host guests. We will have to go back after he finishes a few of the several projects he has in the works.

Warning: Host is misleading

The beach is beautiful, but don't be drawn into this listing for that because it's not worth it.There is garbage and tree debris everywhere creating an eyesore that ruins any views. Just getting our vehicle in was challenging and turning it around to leave was even more difficult. We had to move much of the garbage ourselves to get our van out without damaging it. We awoke to bulldozing construction noises on his land, detracting from what you expect of a pleasant island getaway, a large tree was cut down on the property happening not 200 yards from our "campsite" which was extremely loud and shockingly scary. There is a full size goat with full horns that free roams the property, and when the goat became aggressive towards me because I was cooking, my husband was trying to keep the goat from hurting me, I fearfully stumbled backwards over one of the many stumps that had not been removed and hurt my back. When the host asked me what I'd like him to do, I said that I'd like him to pen up his goat, he refused and said he had no way to do so. We booked two nights and stayed one night only. I communicated to the host that he needs to disclose these things as they are misleading and that I'd like a refund for my second night, he replied 2 days later via Hipcamp messenger. He's now attempting to bribe a 5 star rating. "Ok, fair enough, leave me five start review and I'll return it." I have reported him to Hipcamp as an unsafe listing. I'm wary to book through Hipcamp again.

Unfortunately, the pictures do not match the campsite. The location is very dusty, dirty, and has uneven ground with a community house that is not held to a clean standard. We left a night early due to being so uncomfortable with the experience. The host also crosses a lot of personal boundaries with guests and while he tries to be accommodating it comes across as inappropriate and disrespectful. Prepared to be woken up by the national anthem at 6am. To say that the campsite is a work in progress is an understatement and I would not stay here again or recommend it.

Not ready, needs work.

To call this place “rustic” is real estate agent speak for needs lots of work. Very rough, un even, un covered dirt. No place at our spot to hang out, use a camp stove and the like. We ended up not staying because did not feel comfortable driving our rig in the semi finished driveway at night. Interesting that when we booked the house bathroom was available for guest use but the house was a mess, now I see the bathroom is not available This place has potential but still needs lots of work including, but not limited to, gravel on the way to campsite, finished campsite, and toilet. Do not see any pictures of the area we were to pick our spot, false advertising and makes us gun shy using Hip Camp going forward. We did have a level spot with a great view of the water, our neighbor was not so lucky in getting a level spot. David is nice, his place has big potential but not nearly ready for prime (or subprime) time.

Definitely a little slice of heaven. Perfect little spot for our family with our pop-up camper to explore Mystery Bay, and make great memories! David is an outstanding host, and we enjoyed his company! Shout out to Pinky, Rico, Danke!

Nice location, close to the state parks on the island. David was great and very accommodating. We stayed at a spot right on the water. He is updating his property to really accommodate more hip campers. A worker that is helping him out was super helpful.

Good location. Friendly host. WIP

The location is quiet and near some great parks - Fort Flagger in particular. We had a comfortable overnight stay. The hosts are friendly and helpful. The campsite is a work-in-progress.

Junk Heap

We did not stay here because it is a dump of a place. There was trash and junk everywhere. We took one look and got the heck out. Fortunately the state park down the road had campsites available so we had a place to stay.

Great hosts & perfect location!

David & Cheryl we’re such gracious and helpful hosts. We had our pop up camper & David came out & helped us get settled and hooked up. The view from their deck was amazing and we had a peek-a-boo view from our camper. Great location to explore the area - Fort Flagler & beach hikes, Marrowstone Vineyard (awesome reds), Finn River Cidery (great wood fired pizza too) and The Keg & I for a local brew. Easy drive to Port Townsend for more exploring. Perfect weekend getaway!

Great location, a work in progress

This is a fantastic location. Wooded. Water view, plus access down some stairs to a private dock. Next to small park. Bathroom/kitchen area is inside the owners’ private home; owner photos would help inform expectations. Camp sites could use a little more clearing for flat tent space, stable fire pits and less furniture/adjacent garage projects. Good for a busy couple needing a site, especially if have camper van, not great (yet) for kids on the move/spending the day on site.

We were stayed at this camp on August 27-29, 2021 Thank you Hipcamp Team for reaching out to us. We went there under the impression that we were the only one in there. The place has 3 campsites so we booked all 3 campsites. We told David before booking that we have 5 kids coming along and they are between 3-8 years old. When we arrived,we were shocked that there is another family camping with us since I mentioned earlier that we booked all 3 campsites so there shouldn’t be anyone there. The reason we booked all the campsites because we wanted the privacy and we knew that the kids could be loud. We got unexpected neighbors but we didn’t complain. On the second day after we came back from beach park in the evening, David told us that we could not use shower or bathroom anymore because someone left the water hose on all last night which we had no idea where the water tab was and the way David communicated with us made we felt like we were blame for. Last day morning, we asked him if it was possible for him to take the trash bags for us to the dump and we would pay for it since we had no room available in our car to take the trash with us. He agreed to it and received a $20 bill. WE PAID HIM $20 to take those trash to the dump because we knew if we want the the camp host do the trash for us, we should separate bag of recycle and garbage but we didn’t did that the why we paid him extra $20 for dump it for us. Before we left, someone of our group went to say bye him in his office and showed him where the trash bags we left, he came to look at them and he said it was okay. I don’t understand why he had mentioned about the trash as Luke we didn’t have responsible for it. We paid over $500 for 3 campsites for 2 nights stayed. We so very disappointed the Wayne host and reported us to the Hipcamp Admins with falsely information. Thank you Watchrap Campsite 3, booker. Hello, First of all, we rented all three campsites because we knew we had a large group. We were shocked when another couple set up their tent In A campsite that we had rented. Evidently, the manager double booked that campsite. These were the people that complained about the noise from our group. Our children went to bed around 10 PM, but we stayed up to play cards in our tent. I admit that we get excited when we play cards, but it wasn’t like we were running around the campsite and being crazy. The next morning got off to a bad start when we had no water for washing, showers, or cooking. Someone had left the water on overnight. We have no idea who left the water on. Our group did not even know where to turn the water on or off. The site manager had no back up plan for having no water. Our group was left to fend for itself for bathroom facilities. As to the charge that we left five white bags of trash at the campsite, we paid the site manager $20 to take care of the trash for us. It wasn’t that we didn’t compensate him for taking care of our trash. We thought we were being generous. Charind Campsite 2, booker.

Peace at Bay

David was a delightful Host, greeting us when we got there. Very good at getting back to me, Communication was awesome! Our host was very hospitable, Super surprised that we got yummy coffee in the morning, and even showers with towels and shampoo! Purchasing the six eggs was a plus , because we brought very minimum food with us & it made for a filling breakfast. I enjoyed the lights around the property very much, and the goat was so stinking cute & friendly… It was a great stay!
