Welcome to the Makah Tribe, a unique community known as “Kwih-dich-chuh-ahtx,” which translates to “people who live by the rocks and seagulls.” Our name, “Makah,” given to us by neighboring tribes, signifies our generosity with food. We have inhabited the northwesternmost point of what is now the contiguous United States since time immemorial, living in harmony with the land and sea. For thousands of years, our people have engaged in traditional practices such as whale and seal hunting, as well as fishing in the abundant waters that surround our home. The Western Red Cedar tree has played a vital role in our culture, providing materials for shelter, clothing, and tools. This remarkable tree has also been essential in crafting canoes, enabling us to navigate the waters that sustain us. Historically, our community was made up of five permanent villages: Bahaada, Deah (now known as Neah Bay), Waatch, Sooes, and Ozette. Each village contributed to our rich heritage and way of life. Today, we invite you to explore our vibrant culture and the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds us, including stunning coastlines, lush forests, and opportunities for outdoor adventures.
