Just what is Cowboy Camp, you might ask. The traditional definition refers to sleeping outside under the stars with only a bedroll, a fire and the night sky for companions. But if you are a fan of the western genre and lifestyle, you might also know it as a place to go to hang out with like minded folks and experience the Cowboy lifestyle. This includes all people, men and women alike, as the term "Cowboy" is largely generic and not gender oriented. Such was the case for the actors of the recent TV series 1883. All went to cowboy camp to learn about horses, riding, cowboy skills such as roping, and of course to experience traditional cowboy chuckwagon fare. A taste of that lifestyle is what we are offering here at our Cowboy Camp. It wouldn't be Cowboy Camp without horses and they are definitely present. They can be heard whinnying at mealtimes and throughout the day as they keep in touch with each other. They are generally quiet at night. Horses are not allowed in camping areas when campers are present. No farm would be complete without chickens and ours is no exception. We do have a rooster but he is housed up next to the house with his own hens so hopefully not too noisy. He does wake up early though, frequently long before sunrise. So again, earplugs might be in order for the light sleeper. We do sell farm fresh eggs for your dining enjoyment. $5 per dozen. See the add-on section to reserve yours. We are offering camping sites ranging from simple tent sites with fire ring, picnic table and soft sandy tent sites to small cabin type tents with bed and electricity, up to our newly constructed Cowboy yurt with wool felt siding and floor on raised wooden platform, twin sleeping cots, electricity and wood stove. As part of your cowboy camp experience you can sign up for a horsemanship lesson involving handling and grooming horses and time spent working with the horse in the round pen. (There is no riding offered at this time). You can also sign up for a roping lesson. Learn to throw a loop and catch "Little blue", our roping dummy steer head. We also have games of horseshoes ( with real horseshoes) and corn hole boards. You can take a hike around the property on our trail through mature Douglas fir and majestic Western cedar forest. A 1/4 mile walk down our quiet country gravel road will take you to the 80 acre Jefferson County Land trust forest with several beautiful trails meandering through mature uncut forest. These trails are suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. That forest further connects to the Cappy's trail system, a network of several miles of trails that will wind around and eventually lead into Port Townsend itself if you choose to venture into town. Or you can choose to travel via mountain bike or foot approximately one mile down the road to the DNR forest property that will lead you through more gorgeous wooded and open areas to access the Larry Scott trail, a 7.3 mile out and back firm surface multi-use trail that leads either out of town through the woods or to the north directly into Port Townsend along the scenic waterfront. Our beautiful piece of property is comprised of almost 11 acres situated on the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula just outside the quaint Victorian seaport town of Port Townsend. It lies approximately 4 miles from downtown with its many art galleries, restaurants, shops, boat harbor, farmer's market and the historic Rose theater. The farm itself is located within a section of old growth forest comprised of 100 year old Doug Firs, cedar trees and alder groves. There is an open pasture area in the center of the property, which is ringed completely by thick stands of forest, so it feels completely private. You have to look closely to see the neighboring two houses through the forest. The horses are excluded from camping areas during your visit, and will most likely be housed on neighboring property while guests are present. No need to worry about curious horses coming into your campsite to say hello. It is a wildlife paradise with frequent visits from local deer, bald eagles, ducks on the pond, owls nesting in the trees, and coyotes travelling through. The frog pond is alive all night with singing. If you are a light sleeper you might consider earplugs. We have created a walking trail through the forest around the land that is full of the sounds of life and birds. A pileated woodpecker makes its home in the back corner and two pairs of barred owls also inhabit the nearby Douglas firs. They can be heard at night calling out as they settle in for the evening. An important note for the walking explorer, please be aware that many areas of the farm are in their natural state. This means you might encounter prickly plants such as star thistle, nettles and tansy ragwort. We are happy to identify these for you if you are unfamiliar with them. Please be aware and dress in long pants and long sleeves while hiking. There are no poisonous snakes present in this region. We train horses here so there is a full size riding arena and training round pen. On any given day, you might see horses being trained and ridden. At the end of your day of adventures, you can opt to sign up ( when your site is booked) for a delicious feast at Cowboy Camp. Using old time traditional Dutch oven cooking techniques and slow smoking methods, meals are comprised of such items as slow cooked smoked pork shoulder, Dutch oven baked "Horseshoe Beans" ( a crowd favorite), fire roasted corn on the cob (in season), homemade potato salad, green spinach salad, and of course dessert such as homemade blackberry cobbler or pineapple upside down cake. Vegetarian selections are also available upon request. Venturing out from the farm you can sign up to go on a whale watching excursion with Puget Sound Express out of Port Townsend. Seeing a whale is guaranteed or you get a free return trip. Also, the Olympic National Park is only a short one hour drive to the west and the view from Hurricane Ridge is not to be missed. Your Hosts: Property owners Karma and Rick come with a long extensive history of experience in the horse industry and western culture. Together they share over 100 years of experience with horses, both having ridden since young children. Karma loves sharing her knowledge of horses and horsemanship with others and has been a certified riding instructor for many years. Rick grew up with a horse and cattle background from a young age. As a young man he competed in the rodeo sports of bareback broncs, calf roping, bull riding and team roping. He then worked as a professional farrier, horse trainer and ranch employee in Texas. He learned the art of Texas BBQ cooking while living and working on Texas ranches. He loves to cook for others and enjoys sharing tales of the ranch life. You can choose to be as involved as you like during your visit. You can sit quietly in the forest and just enjoy peace and quiet if you so desire. We will not bother you. Our goal is simply to provide you with a beautiful place to relax, play, and enjoy during your visit. So come on out, set a spell, and enjoy a wonderful day, weekend, or week here at Cowboy Camp. Side note : Due to the presence of horses, chickens and various wildlife on the property, in addition to outdoor cooking activities, we do not allow outside dogs at this time. Thank you for your understanding.

Doe's Rest
We had a great time at Doe's Rest. We were escorted to our campsite by Rick who was very personable. He gave us a tour of the property and recommendations for things to do the following day. We saw several deer during our stay.

Buck Rub
Nice host, but bad sites
First off, Rick is a really nice guy, with an interesting back story ( we didn’t meet Karma). We were asked to move from Buck Rub to Doe’s Rest site to help accommodate another camper who had a trailer, and we were happy to help out. Unfortunately, the sites aren’t really ready for guests yet. Our new site had been recently bladed out of the brush. It was small, ringed by dirt berm and brush piles, dark and overgrown. None of the sites have been leveled or have gravel pads- they will be a muddy mess when it rains. The nearest toilet was a pop-up fabric shelter with a torn door, with a portable toilet that couldn’t be used properly because the instructions were illegible. Also, Rick didn’t want any campfires. With more work on the camp sites and some portapotties, this property will be fine. As I said earlier, the hosts seem great. But right now, the camp isn’t ready for prime time.

Thumbs up for Cowboy Camping 👍
Rick and Karma's place is excellent! We really appreciate them sharing their grounds with us for tent camping, and it was a real pleasure to meet Rick and talk through the cowboy life. We were camping that weekend to visit the Port Townshend boat show and area, and it worked out really well. See you all again soon!

Hosts were very friendly. Have horses on property and some sweet old dogs. Camping is out along perimeter of field. Noise traveled across the area from other sites but wasn't disturbing. There is a small fire area with rocks around and a nice picnic table in each area. We got a bundle of firewood but decided we should get another because we decided to cook on sticks over the open flame. There is no grate so don't get that confused. Rick brought us more wood after he took his horse for a ride which the kids on other camp liked. The potty.. There is a porta potty up by the barn but it's a ways from camp area. There is a pop up shower tent under a tree with a little camping toilet and a pump sink. The tiny solar Light are not very visible and I had a hard time finding it in the dark sky in the field so familiarize yourself with it before dark. Also the field is pretty bumpy for walking across... Would recommend a flashlight vs a cell phone flashlight 🤓 Rick also made sure we had a 5 gallon port ale water jug when we got there which we didn't use because we had brought water. They haven't been in hipcamp long but feel each year will have more improvements. We would return if in the area.

Doe's Rest
We had a wonderful experience at Cowboy Camp. We will be visiting this camp again in the future. Rick and Karma were very accommodating and truly enjoy hosting and taking care of the campers. Our site (and the others) was quiet and peaceful and at night it was so dark the sky was illuminated with a million stars. Also a short walk up the trail to visit the horses was a treat everyday. Port Townsend downtown was only a few minutes away as was the harbor. A+ for Rick and Karma and Cowboy Camp. A job well done!

Great location!
What a great place to camp! Port Townsend and Fort Worden are awesome to explore. Rick and Karma’s camp ground is close to town but you feel like you’re in the woods when you’re there. They are wonderfully accommodating and some of the nicest people I’ve met. See you next summer!

Cowboy Yurt
Wow what a stay! Rick and Karma were such great company. The camp is tucked in the woods, but the yurt is on an elevated pad by the road. Not much traffic, but it's there. Nice to have a picnic table. A short walk to the port a pottie and a clever pressure-powered little sink (not a very large one, humble water flow) The yurt is made from reclaimed materials but it's nice and sturdy. very basic on the inside so bring any camping furniture and comforts you need. I recommend a door matt or little floor rug The location is great too!

We had such an amazing time camping here! Karma and Rick are so nice and helped us with all the things we forgot to bring! I highly recommend their tipi tent. They set it up for us and it was so big! If you are looking for a nice secluded campsite without the hassle of setting everything up this is the spot for you! Also you have to try the cowboy coffee!

Spending a day cowboy style!
Rick and Karma have a great property with beautiful horses. This is a primative camping spot mind you, with an outhouse. Rick is a real cowboy with great stories and Karma is so hospitable. We rented the yurt by the correl of horses. There are private camping spots hidden away from barn and horses that are easy to get to by car. They have a picnic table and fire ring in each. Rick will cut some wood for you and deliver it for a nominal fee of 5 dollars for a generous bundle. He made this yurt himself out of upcycled materials. He's a very creative man and does Leatherwork and is quite a chuckwagon cook. Famous for his beans I hear. I don't think there is anything he can't do. Looking forward to going back to see what else he created. Karma is adding coffee and somethin from the oven in the near future. Great host and hostess.

Comfortable and personable
This was such a unique place to stay - I felt very comfortable and safe. Rick and Karma are extremely kind and accommodating. I felt like I was staying on family property. They had cute horses and a couple of very sweet pups. If you’re lucky, you can sit by the fire at night with Rick and hear his cowboy stories. I came here as I was photographing a festival but I will definitely come back as an excuse to visit. Also, my friend forgot a sleeping bag and Rick and Karma made sure they were all hooked up with blankets which we thought was very nice.

Rick and Karma have a very special place, and they’re so gracious about sharing it! Rick rode up on a horse to greet us and he was probably one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. Waking up to the sounds of the horses galloping was a fun experience. Would absolutely stay again!

We came down for the Thing festival and we're greeted with open arms back Karma & Rick. Lovely, fun people who are ready to help if you should need anything. Plenty of space for 3 Tents with a nice bench, picnic table and firepit already on site, along with a nice trash can. Can't state enough how wonderful our experience was. Do yourself a favor and take a weekend off and head to the Cowboy Camp.

Karma & Rick to the rescue!
Karma & Rick came to our rescue with such kindness and we are beyond grateful. We were on a camping trip to celebrate my grandson’s birthday and ran into a mosquito infestation the likes of which we had never experienced. We had to pick up and go, making alternate arrangements late in the evening. With a one and nine year old in tow, we arrived at the entrance of their property and they guided us to the campsite. We had a problem with the ladder for our Roofnest and Rick even fetched us a ladder and showed us how to use it. We left before sun up to make it to the only ferry reservation we could get. Can’t wait to go back and actually get to see the farm! Thank you, dear hosts!

My friends and I had an amazing time camping at Rick and karma's cowboy camp. On or drive into the camp we saw some beautiful horses and when we arrived Rick was there on a horse waiting to show us to our campsite. The campsites were beautiful and they also brought us water and fire wood. We had a nice talk with Rick when we got there and then we got to meet karma the next morning. When we were talking with Rick we got to spend time petting their horses and one of their dogs baker. When we got up the next morning we got to pet the horses for a while again and then speak with karma before we left. Overall they were lovely people and I would highly recommend staying here.

I don’t even know where to start. Karma & Rick are two gems of humans, and they make you feel so incredibly welcome from the moment you step on their land. They are new to the hip camp world but you’d think they had been doing this for years! The property was beautiful, and the conversations we had with Rick over cowboy coffee will never be forgotten.
