Woodland camping on the edge of the Clwydian Range in North Wales

Treetops and Train Tracks is a campsite that’s eco-friendly, peaceful and, according to many of the happy campers who have stayed here, a little bit magical too. It offers just a handful of tent pitches and treetop tents in among the leafy surroundings of an 18-acre woodland in the Clwydian Valley. It’s a family run and family friendly place to stay – the perfect place to toast marshmallows round the campfire while sharing stories of the day’s adventures. Those might include hikes up nearby Clwydian Hills or trips to the seaside on the North Welsh coast, as both are within reach of here.

A train track ran along the edge of these woods a long time ago and that heritage is remembered both in the name of the site and in the facilities which are housed in a timber cabin, cleverly styled as a railway carriage. This is an off-grid place to stay so loos are composting and the hot showers are powered by gas. There’s a communal kitchen and fire pits too. All this is shared between campers who are welcome to set up tents on the six lawned pitches between the trees – or those who opt to book a pre-pitched Tentsile tree tent instead. There are three to choose from, sleeping between three and six in an off-ground tent that puts you among the trees. If you’ve not tried one before it’s an exciting experience with the eco-bonus of causing less disturbance to the forest floor below. You’ll need to be agile to get inside via a ladder – but this site suits active outdoor lovers so for most guests who head out this way, that’s no problem.

It’s outdoor adventures that abound around here: mountain biking and hilly hikes are easily found. On sunny days you can head to the seaside at Rhyl or Talacre and, whether the sun shines or not, the nearby market towns of Mold, Denbigh and Wrexham are pleasant for a wander. Your hosts here, Seb and Hannah, are part of what makes this place special. They live on site with their children, dogs and chickens and will be happy to share their tips on things to do on days out and how to make the most of this wildlife-rich, woodland site.

We live in a 18 acre woodland, in the heart of North East Wales, nestled under the hills of the Clwydian range. In 2018 we bought this woodland, bordered by an old disused railway and old sand quarry. Silent and forgotten, untamed and unloved, we saw a space of diverse trees, native woodland flowers and a flurry of woodland animals that could become something unique. We (Seb, Hannah and our 3 little adventurers) are passionate about people, the great outdoors and creating a sustainable future; living, exploring and having adventures along the way. We are on a journey, learning about nature, trying out new skills and discovering all the fun and activities the great outdoors has to offer. This place is special; a slice of British woodlands in all its glory. A place to be still, a place to run, and a place to create memories. There is too much here to keep to ourselves, too many first times to be had, too many campfire stories to tell; so we’ve opened our home for the world to share.
Nearby attractions

Treetops and Train Tracks Campsite is in an 18-acre woodland with pathways throughout which you are welcome to explore. It is on the edge the Clwydian Range National Landscape with plenty of longer hikes up hills too. You can head out to conquer Moel Arthur, a hilltop Iron Age fort, directly from the campsite or drive a few miles to the bottom of Moel Famau (nine miles), which at 554-metres is the highest peak in the Clwydians. Loggerheads Country Park (six miles) is a good place to start any exploration of the area as there’s a visitor centre with lots of information – and a handy tea room too. There’s plenty of mountain biking in the hills with a range of good tracks for all abilities near the village of Cilcain (three miles). For a mooch around town, there’s the market town of Mold (six miles from site), Denbigh (10 miles) and Wrexham (18 miles) and you can reach the coast in about half an hour. Talacre (14 miles) and Rhyl (19 miles) are the closest places for a day at the seaside.

Food and drink

Treetops and Train Tracks is just outside the village of Nannerch and the closest place to eat out is The Indian Lounge on the main road not far from site (one mile). For a traditional pub meal, head into the village (two miles) for the Cross Foxes Inn which serves a good menu with plenty of local produce. Another recommended pub is The Dinorben Arms in Bodfari (seven miles) which has a lovely setting and a terrace with great views along with a menu of modern pub food. If you are cooking for yourself, Mold (six miles) is a good option as it has lots of independent shops and a twice-weekly market too.
