I would definitely go back. It's tucked far away back and has beautiful mountain views. The outhouse was even decorated for Halloween! As a solo female camper I felt safe and that's very important to me. New Castle is only a 10-15 drive away if you need anything.
There was no cell service with Verizon, which can't be helped but just be aware.

Just checked out today and we loved it! The space was fantastic, loved all the amenities (outhouse, grill, fire pits)! Saw a few deer, made a fire in the awesome fire pit, and enjoyed the fall colors🍁. Overall it was an amazing experience!

We loved the privacy we had camping at "Stone Soup". There was ample space and woods surrounding us on all side (save the driveway in). The firepit provided much warmth in the mornings and evenings. Having two picnic tables was a game changer for us and we enjoyed having the eating and work space.
The only downside we found was the sound of the road traffic, especially at night. It wasn't often, but every once in awhile a really loud truck would plow through.
Justin was a wonderful host and welcomed us after arrival and have us tips on where to go fishing. My kids loved having "their own" trail through the woods (took about 10 minutes at a fast kid pace).
The toilet was clean and everything we needed.

Fantastic camp, perfect for our family. The site was very well maintained, peaceful, and had great extra amenities. Justin, the host, was great with communication and made sure our stay was enjoyable. Highly recommend!

This place was so amazing I ended staying an extra night. This is a huge campsite with the convenience of a covered picnic area and first class outhouse. The sounds of the creek just across the road lulls you to sleep as well as the orchestra of night creatures. The host, Justin, stopped by twice to help with the fire and I actually learned some tips from watching him. He could not be more friendly and gratuitous. The convenience of location to New Castle to grab provisions as needed is also a plus. Justin also recommended Fenwick Mines Trails in the Jefferson National Forrest which is an easy hike which leads to a waterfall and definitely recommended. Definitely will make this spot a place to come back to.

We had an amazing time and Justin stopped by twice to check on us and even helped us with a fire. I would highly recommend his property which is private and clean with two covered tables and two fire pits. A+ experience!

The site was well-maintained with great trails snaking from it. The area surrounding is beautiful with a couple of good hiking trails. I recommend checking out Fenwick Mines, there is a cool waterfall there. If you want a weekend away from the rest of the world, you can find it there!

Justin’s spot was great. We loved the fire pit, and the charcoal grill was an excellent backup when we forgot propane! I’ve never seen a cleaner outhouse, as well. We drove ~30 mins to Mcafee Knob for hiking, and the drive was fine. Limited Verizon service at the campsite on my old phone, but plenty near the hike! Justin was an excellent host and even provided a trash can. Thank you very much!

This was my second time coming here for a weekend getaway, Justin is a really stand up guy! He hiked over from his house all the way to the site with a giant water jug so that it would be easier to put out the fire we had made before going to bed. He also checked on us to see if we needed anything, he’s a real nice dude! Me and my buddies will absolutely keep coming here!
You can also see many stars in the night sky when it’s clear, it’s very beautiful!

We had a great stay, ideal location as a base camp for hiking the triple crown. Property was very clean and well-maintained. Justin‘s communication was excellent. Plenty of firewood on site and the pit toilet was a convenient touch. Would definitely recommend and stay here again if we’re ever in the area.

We really enjoyed our New Year’s stay on Justin’s land! Justin was helpful and communicative and briefly stopped by to be sure we had settled in and had everything we needed.
Pros:

Cons:
- Right off a fairly noisy road/doesn’t feel super private
- We visited after rain, so the firewood was wet causing issues starting and maintaining a fire

The spot was awesome. There are two different fire pits, a larger one that looks like it could accommodate a much larger fire and much bigger group, as well as a smaller, more modest one that was perfect for our two-man crew. There’s a little picnic shelter as well and the picnic tables were nice and clean. Almost looked like Justin maybe pressure washed them or something. There was a nice flat area for our tent and we were able to back our cars right up to the camp site. The little potty house was very clean as well and had a roll of toilet paper in a ziplock inside the sawdust bucket. Justin swung by the site during our visit to introduce himself and see if we needed anything and was a great host. Firewood was already onsite. There are also a few trails to explore and the town of New Castle is maybe 15 minutes away where we were able to pick up some extra ice. Pine top restaurant also had some yummy food and was the perfect meeting place for lunch after the long drive before we headed to the camp site.
It wasn’t an issue for us really, but others may wish to be aware that the site is conveniently located just off of a mountain road so there’s a bit of road noise that will reach the camp, but as long as that’s not some sort of deal-breaker for you, I can say you won’t be disappointed if you book with Justin!

Justin was a great host they supplied all the fire wood we needed. It was a wonderful campsite boarding the national forest. Not far from Newcastle, a small town fun to explore also, close to state and county parks. We enjoy visiting. Would highly recommend and will definitely be visiting next fall.

Great Base Camp for Triple Crown

Our group of four adults was tackling the Triple Crown over a 3-day weekend and made The Meadow at Stone Soup our base camp for our adventure. The site was about 30 minutes from the trailheads for Tinker Cliffs, McAfee Knob, and Dragons Tooth, and the private campsite setting was a great alternative to the larger campgrounds in the area (no noise/interruptions from other groups, just occasional passing vehicles on the nearby road). The covered picnic tables were a good amenity in case of weather, although it was clear the weekend we visited, and the provided firewood and dual fire pits were well-used for morning and evening campfires. The site was well-suited to our combination of tent and hammock campers, and the composting toilet was the cleanest latrine I have ever seen at a non-plumbed campsite. With no running water, we did have to bring drinking water and make a quick daily stop by the local creek to fill our fire bucket, but this was easy to accommodate. The property had a number of trails that we didn’t really get a chance to explore, but the adjacent larger clearing was ideal for stargazing and we saw a Starlink train, comet, wisps of the Milky Way, and numerous satellites on our clear evenings. Justin was a great host and provided communications before arrival and during our visit, including providing additional firewood when we used the initial supply. We would definitely recommend the site for anyone looking for a base camp outside the crowds in this area.

Justin's place was gorgeous! Absolutely perfect for a camping getaway! Close to the road but surrounded by wilderness makes this site quiet and accessible. My dog and I had a blast walking around and using the massive fire pit!

Nice spot with trails, one massive fire pit and another normal one with wood provided, as well as small charcoal grill. Covered picnic tables are great. Outhouse with compost toilet kept clean. Nice and shady, was a bit closer to the road than we expected you do hear every vehicle that passes but there’s not really overnight traffic. Great stargazing when it’s clear, it’s dark as heck out there.

We loved our stay at Justin's! It was easy to find and he had everything prepared before our arrival. He was flexible with our check in and the site was easy to find. There are two fire pits, but the large one is unreal! The grill was perfect for us to cook dinner on and there was plenty of seating. We didn't even need the extra table and chairs we brought. The trails are so nice to explore with the family and dogs. This was our first camp with a compost toilet and let me tell you, it's a game changer! We really hope to make it back during the fall because we know it will be breathtaking when the leaves are changing. Such a fabulous time to unwind and unplug.

Awesome area and convenient location, I took my truck on a couple trails and the area and Justin let me know about an area called Finwick mines day use area, where I was able to fish and see some wildlife. The campsite was awesome and has everything you need for a longer trip and Justin was very accommodating

This is a lovely place to camp. The fire pit is like something out of Game of Thrones, and while it’s near a road very few cars pass by so you mainly hear the wind through the trees and the creek in the background. Another plus is there isn’t a lot of thick, tall grass so it’s not a very welcoming environment for ticks. The fact that it’s a single campsite means no neighboring campers which is also nice. There were only three of us but you could easily make it a group outing with some friends, there’s enough room on the benches around the fire pit and there are two covered picnic tables. Justin came by to introduce himself and he was super nice - rare for any campground or Hipcamp host to offer the firewood for free. Even though we are from nearby Roanoke we found a new favorite breakfast spot nearby called the Pine Top with biscuits as big as your head. Just make sure you charge your devices and bring a big jug of water since there’s no electrical hookup or potable water. And if you have Verizon download any music or maps etc. before you go because there is no service in the area.

Justin has done an amazing job with the trails and location. Tent camping with plenty of privacy and room for the dogs to play. We saw an eagle and listened to the owls at night. Justin is a great host and we hope to be back soon.
