Wendy's Hipcamp was amazing! The location along the James River was absolutely stunning. Our site felt secluded from the other sites and had plenty of space for hanging out. We loved waking up and walking right down to the river to enjoy our coffee. The location is close to Natural Bridge State Park and Wendy's recommendation for Natty B Cafe was the perfect spot to grab food in the area.

This place is a wonderful place to camp. Basics are covered like firewood and a porta-john with none of the fluff.

Nice location on the water with large sites. It was helpful to have firewood there, and the porta potti was sufficient and stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Beautiful view of the river, I loved my stay at spot #5 :) Check in and communication were smooth, I felt safe as a woman traveling alone, would definitely recommend.

We arrived late but it was easy to find a vacant site, and we quickly set ourselves up in #4. Peaceful night watching an amazing display or stars over the James River. Convenient portajohn nearby was much appreciated. In the morning we had breakfast then packed up to go off on adventures. This was a perfect spot to land for a night, and we’ll definitely come again next time we’re in the area.

This site is ALMOST perfect. The sites were far enough apart to feel private. The river frontage was lovely. You could hear the river babbling at night. Wood and toilet on site was super convenient. Host directions were clear.
But those trains. While the host makes very clear that the site is located between two active railroads, I didn’t imagine they would be as close and used as frequently as they were. There are tracks immediately on the other side of the river and they seem to run only at night and throughout the night. The screeching of the wheels on the tracks, the roar of the engine and the horn were so loud. The first night I woke up about every two hours to a train. The second night I had to sleep with noise canceling headphones. If you’re a heavy sleeper, this site is perfect. If not, be prepared to wake up in the night a lot.

This was a great experience. I stayed on site 5. The sites were spread out and far apart enough to not disturb one another. It was extremely peaceful and beautiful. I even got the treat of seeing a few otters catch some breakfast in the river. The toilets were clean and well kept. The fire wood was easily accessible at a good price. I will be back next year and will be referring a few co workers that have already inquired about my stay.

What an awesome and unique find. We camped at site 4, which had a beautiful view of the river (with great access), was near a porta potty (clean with TP & sanitizer), and near the wood stack (freshly split). I appreciated the hanging QR code to purchase more wood if needed. The sites are nicely spread apart and sandwiched btw two active train tracks that are beautiful to watch and listen to at night. Great hiking trails within a 15min drive. Truly a 20/10 weekend and we’re excited to come back in the spring!

James River Depot is exactly what Wendy described. On a road trip, my husband and I were looking for a peaceful campsite for a one night stay. This is it. The campsites located in the beautiful Virginia countryside are private and the port a potty was clean. We stayed at #4 with a beautiful view of the river. Loved the sounds of the river, birds, and the trains. Although we only stayed one night, this is a perfect place for any person or family looking to connect with nature for a longer period of time in a tranquil and private space.
Wendy’s directions to the site were perfect. She also offered helpful information regarding services in the area.

beautiful, remote spot. didn’t have to interact with anyone except the host, Mike who was very kind. sat by the river and watched deer cross and birds enjoying the day.
port-a-potties but very clean and Mike said they’re cleaned weekly. would visit again!

We stayed at campsite 1 and absolutely loved it! We were mostly secluded and also had access to the river. It was a bit buggy and there’s a pawpaw tree that had some rotting fruit on the ground, but that didn’t bother us much. We loved being in the river and the night sky was beautiful! The trains do come through quite often, so be aware that it will be noisy at times. We could hear the other groups throughout our time so it didn’t feel fully peaceful and secluded, but we personally didn't mind much. We would definitely stay again!

We loved camping on here. The firewood was great, we had a nice time cooking food and looking at the water. We were at site 2. Paid extra for corn hole and it was worth every penny. Next time we will bring inner tubes so we can get the most out of the river. They have an ax we could use to chop the firewood. They had Venmo set up if you had no cash to spare. Lots of families around this time but just enough privacy. Highly recommend skipping rocks, sitting around the fire, and in enjoying the sounds of the trains in the morning and through the night, if you are a light sleeper it may not be for you, but by then end I was so tired I slept through em. 10/10, we will be coming again. It’s first come first serve so we’ll try to go for a nicer spot next time. Great experience for my 2nd time camping EVER. Great views on the way too. General store near by had the best ice cream and thankfully duck tape. Loved it here!

I love the beauty of this camp. Surrounded by hills, each site is under a canopy of tall trees with river front access and views. The sites are nicely spread out and some were quite large. The sound of the river is soothing. The trains were loud enough for me to reach for ear plugs, but fine once I made that adjustment.

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend camping here. The sites are nice and spread out, with convenient bathrooms and firewood. We loved swimming in the James after a long hike. Will be camping here again!

My friend and I met here at James River Depot me coming from NC, him coming from PA. Camping location was nice and beautiful views all around. We ended up going to see Natural Bridge, played disc golf and mountain bikes on the 4 mile trail. The James River is right beside the campsites so we brought tubes and enjoyed just within the camp site location walking down to the entrance coasting down to site 4 where our tents were located. There are two active train lines that run parallel with the river and just add to the charm of the experience. Some of the freight trains came by while we slept both nights but it wasn't that big of a deal. Great experience, I highly recommend.

- this location is really beautiful, with views of two active railways and a quaint creek next door. however, we found the management put into it very questionable. we got to the site on monday with the impression that the porta-johns would be relatively cleaned, as said by other reviewers. both toilets were full of feces and wreaked upon entering them. the walls were covered in dirt and spiderwebs, and the hand sanitizer were crusted and empty, as if they hadn’t been touched for at least a month. we bought two bundles of firewood thinking there would be plenty to fill two wheelbarrows. the firewood left for us was wet or rotten, and what could be salvaged was too big to cut with the dull axe left for us. as soon as we finished setting up our camp, i messaged the owners of the site four times for assistance, and no one responded. it wasn’t until the next morning after my group and i had to go purchase firewood elsewhere when i had to track down the host’s number in the hipcamp that i finally got someone to talk to. she was very interruptive, and her tone made it seem like what i was addressing to her was a burden. while i was talking, i was rudely cut off and told i’d be refunded for everything. refunds can turn a lot of people’s bad experiences around, but when i feel like the host truly does not care about any single thing i’m saying to them, a refund will not save that experience for me. my friends and i will not be returning to this site, as beautiful as it is.

Absolutely phenomenal little place, first time camping by myself and this was a perfect place to do it at, perfect view of the lake and being able to get in and get my feet wet, absolutely 100\10 recommend!
