Socks Family farm is the largest remaining piece of the Urban dairy farm, for which the road is named. When the hurricane of 1938 hit New England, farmers Bernard and Arreca Urban and their daughter Velma took shelter in their dairy barn, and watched their little farm cabin tumble down. After the storm, Bernard built a sturdy farmhouse, complete with hurricane rods in the walls, embedded in the bedrock. We live in that house, and had the pleasure of being friends with Velma for a number of years, till her death in 2016.  We moved to this land in 2007 with our two small children, hoping to grow food and give our kids a rural childhood. We succeeded in some things, failed in others, and have many things we'd still like to try. Every season brings change, and we do our best to learn and grow from the opportunities we are given. Learn more about this land: Socks Family Farm comprises 30 acres, high in the hills of Cabot VT. Our campsites are nestled at the edges of the fields and woods. The fields are meadowland, where we pasture our animals, cut hay, and enjoy the company of a diverse cohort of grasses, flowers, insects, and birds. The fields are open, with ample sunshine and steady breezes. On clear nights, the stars are lovely, and if you're fortunate to be here on a moonless night, you'll be treated to the breathtaking sweep of the Milky Way. During the day, you can linger in the gardens, visit the sheep and chickens, wade in the pond, hike in the woods, walk the lovely dirt roads, or head out on your bike. If you're ready to range further, we're a short drive to hiking, paddling, fishing, swimming, epic mountain biking, quaint eateries, microbreweries, and more. St Johnsbury and Montpelier are the closest cities (25 and 35 minutes). Burlington is 1.25 hours, and Montreal is 2.5 hours. We moved to this land in 2007 with our two small children, and began developing a homestead. Over time, we built 2 greenhouses, a large equipment shed, planted and fenced an orchard, berry & perennial patch, & vegetable garden, made several flower gardens, set up systems for pasturing sheep and chickens, planted native shrubs and trees, and completely renovated the farmhouse. We practice organic regenerative agriculture and landscaping, with a deep commitment to strengthening and diversifying ecological systems. We offer free farm tours, and those who want to help & learn are welcome. We love the beauty of this land, and look forward to sharing it with you.

Beautiful place!
Susie was a great host and helped me out last minute when another hip camp site didn't go as planned. The tenting location was beautiful as well overlooking the mountains, the moon, and the garden! She was very knowledgable about her gardening and showed me around her homestead. I would definitely stay here again!

Camping on a gorgeous Farm!
Absolute beauty!!!! Susan and her family could not have been better hosts. Friendly and responsive, Susan even took time after her long day of work, to give us a tour of the amazing gardens she and her husband built. We chose the "Mountain View" site, and spent the week looking off into the rolling mountains. You get amazing views of the sun and moon rising over the ridge. Tons of wildlife, berries growing wild, and very, very little traffic on the dirt road where the farm is. Helga the farm dog, is the most friendly, happy pup I've ever met!! When you come to fill up your water ( which is better than anything in a bottle BTW) Helga just rolls over and smiles, waiting for those belly rubs!! What a beautiful, amazing family and property :) 5 minutes away from Cabot, where you have a general store, farm HUB pickup, gas station, and of course Cabot Cheese factory. There are wonderful farms all surrounding the site, where we found amazing local products for our meals.

Beautiful views
Me and my friend booked 1 night and it was such a beautiful area/campsite! The sunrise was incredible and having nearby washroom access/drinkable water was convenient. Would recommend bringing a fold up table/chairs.

Perfect for families with littles!
Where do I even begin! This was by far my favorite camping experience ever. Susan’s farm is so charming and all the hard work and effort she’s put into it is evident. Susan was so gracious and gave us a tour of her farm. She also shared some of her gardening wisdom with us as we’re starting to grow our own food too. We were quite nervous about camping for the first time with our one year old but it went so well. He had so much fun walking through the fields and picking raspberries. He didn’t care to walk around with the chickens but he loved petting Helga, Susan’s sweet dog. It was so cool watching him explore and there was no stress as an open field poses very little danger for a toddler. We opted for the solar shower which was very convenient after a full day of running around in the heat. The Mountain View during the day was stunning and the view of the stars at night was incredible. I had never seen that many stars in my life! Overall such an awesome experience, Susan is a perfect host and we can’t wait to go back.

Beautiful and quiet farm campsite off the beaten path. A real hidden gem and happy I found it on a fall weekend when all other campsites were either closed or sold out. Despite poor weather the next morning, I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely come back!

A sweet little off the grid oasis 🥰
Susan’s Farm was so beautiful. We arrived late at night and did not get to see the farm, but the stars were AMAZING! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many stars so clearly! We stayed at the field and friends spot on the edge of the woods and it was a perfect little secluded area for us and our pup. The next morning, Susan have us a wonderful tour of the farm. Her dog, Helga and our corgi Mochie had a blast together 🥰 We hope to come back and visit again next year.

Beautiful, well-managed farmstead
We appreciated that our very gracious host Susan got in touch with us right after we made our reservation to offer whatever advice or local information we might need. Our site was at the top of a pasture where a flock of sheep watched us build our campfire. View of mountains and plenty of space. Susan and her family are keeping their land healthy with regenerative farming techniques that we learned about during her farm tour.

Susan was a lovely, responsive host and gave us a fun tour of her family’s homestead, which sits on a large chunk of gorgeous meadows and fields. The campsite was private, yet easily accessible, and the farm in Cabot is a short drive from several towns that are great to explore and experience the unique Vermont culture. If you’re interested in a no-frills campsite, and learning about organic, regenerative agriculture in New England, this is the ideal place to spend a few nights.

Best place to unplug
My husband and I had the best time staying on Socks Farm. It was our first HipCamp trip, as well, so we couldn't have picked a better location. Susan and Mike are kind and inspirational. Their farm is beautiful, each campsite offers a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains and the sheep and chickens are easy to quickly befriend. It's an easy drive to multiple hiking locations, including a rail trail in Danville, short hike to Nichol's Ledge and a little longer drive to Mt Mansfield. Cross your fingers the night sky is clear because the star gazing is unreal.

Susan, Bill, and helga greeted us warmly upon arrival. The campsites were all nice flat patches of grass and Susan was very clear with her instructions for check in/ showing us around and telling us where everything was. We woke up and picked raspberries, currents, and gooseberrys! Anyone considering staying here should definitely book it!

Due to our ambitious schedule, we got in late in the evening and left early in the morning, but Susan's farm was a beautiful place to put our tent for the night. Watching the full moon come up over the meadow, the plentiful stars, the sound of roosters near dawn, the steam rising off the grass with the sun. We had a very pleasant stay.
