Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

Secluded Hammock Spot on the River

This is a walk-in site located in a small stand of trees on the top of the river bank. It is the furthest, most secluded site, but also the most primitive. This site is meant to be super low impact, leave no trace, hammock camping only, no tents. You will have an excellent view of both the river and the sky, as well as shade when the trees are in leaf. The walk from parking is about 2-3 minutes. To get to easy access to the river for swimming or paddling is about 3-5 minutes. You will be provided with a compost toilet bucket, but no privacy structure, however, the seclusion and distance from other sites is privacy enough. No fires are allowed at this site (camp stoves only) and only pets who will stay with you at all times.

One of two sites in the pecan orchard, this one sits in a sheltered low spot, shaded by pecan trees (when in leaf). There are two sets of small falls in the river by this site, providing you with the lovely sound of flowing water. A couple paths lead down to the river for wading, swimming and fishing. A fire ring with a grate is provided and the toilet is a stone's throw away.

Orchard Hilltop

This is one of two sites located in our pecan orchard. This one sits atop one of the gentle rises and overlooks the river, with a (steep) path leading down to the water for wading or fishing. When the trees are in leaf, there's lots of shade. The toilet is a short distance away and a fire pit with grill top is provided.

Stargazer is perfect for those who's primary goal is an unobstructed view of the sky. A stargazing platform provides a spot to lay flat on your back for stargazing and watching meteor showers or to set up your telescope. This site includes a Weber grill, fire ring and compost toilet behind a privacy screen. There is no shade at this site so plan accordingly!

River View has both an open view of the sky for stargazing and a wonderful view of the San Saba River below the site. When the trees are in leaf, cedar elm and soapberry trees offer an ample shady area. A compost toilet and fire ring are provided (please do not gather firewood; we sell wood on site if needed). A short walk takes you to a lovely spot on the river to wade, fish or paddle.

Skyview is perfect for those who want an unobstructed view of the night sky, sunrise and sunset. A short, less than one minute walk, takes you right to a lovely spot to wade, fish, swim or put a canoe or kayak in the river. A fire ring and compost toilet are provided. Sunset View Tent Spot

This site has a dirt tent pad and space to park one car. There is room for one four person tent or two two person tents. It is surrounded by cactus, mesquite and other brush, offering privacy, but it is located relatively near our house compared to all our other sites, therefore, be prepared to hear our dogs barking, toddler making noise, etc. Some of our poultry flock also has free range in this area. There are no shade trees, so be prepared, especially in hot weather. An extension cord can reach this site from our house, but will only be able to power a fan or light, or charge your device. A roughly ten minute leisurely walk takes you to the river where you can swim, fish paddle and wade. A compost toilet and outdoor shower with hot water are located a short walk away. A small charcoal grill is also provided. Fires and pets are not permitted at this site.

Went here post the flood but it’s very apparent that this is a beautiful place. The orchards are amazing and the night sky is top tier. Would recommend the lower orchard site 100%

Really pretty campsite with good distance between neighboring campsites for some privacy. The night sky was amazing — we even saw the Milky Way around 7:20pm! Our toddler loved the visit from their friendly dog and hearing all the animals. Host was also quick to respond whenever we had questions. Overall, a really nice spot if you’re looking to chill, relax, and enjoy a starry sky. A couple small things that could make the experience even better: slightly more maintained paths around the campsite area (helpful for families with young kids), and a bit of tree trimming along the road in would make the drive smoother. For the price, it’s great… just come expecting a nice, rustic experience.

We loved it here. The hosts are awesome and will do be back and soon maybe by myself lol no 3year old this time. Although for my 3 year olds 1st time camping she did amazingly. Me on the other hand lost it a couple of times 😂 but just loved the views and river. Goats where so sweet and on one the family's dog staied with us almost every night except the night it got down to 33 he was smart and went back home. 😂. Thank y'all again for the whole experience.

We loved our night here. We went swimming in the river, it was the perfect temperature. Bjorn the dog hung out with us all night and got along great with our dog, he was fantastic we were so sad leaving him in the morning. Nice and shady area, felt very private!

Been here twice, loved it both times. Hosts are great and very accomodating. We stayed at the hilltop & the water was very nice. Friendly dog hung out and swam with us the whole trip, will be back soon!

We love tent camping on Logan's land! We have gone twice and will likely be back. The river is so pretty. And the farm animals are fun too, especially their dog who joins us at camp and for hikes.

I had a great weekend at Low Gear. Plenty of space, chill atmosphere, and Logan is a great host. It was a perfect sport to get away but also be close enough to town (Menard or Mason) or take some scenic driving in the hill country!

It was my first time camping with my dad and 2 dogs we loved seeing the views and the wildlife. After we arrived we were greeted by the owner and she had told us were to go and we sat our stuff up and we went to the town and got some food to make. When we came back and had one of there cattle dogs stand guard outside our tent all night watching over them he greeted us and our dogs early morning.

We loved our campsite at Low Gear Farmstead, it was very easy to find given the instruction and we were very pleased when we rolled up and saw our campsite! It’s spacious and right next to a river / stream that we spent most of our weekend swimming and tubing in. The host sold generous amounts of affordable firewood and yes we did go see the goats, it was very worth it. The best part was our surprise guest, Bjorn the dog who was very friendly and kept us company throughout our stay, and was a joy to have along with us. The worst part was leaving and seeing him chase behind after us 🥺 Highly recommend camping here, we got to do everything we wanted to and more! Logan the host is very responsive and attentive too, and fun to talk with. I want to go back already!

I absolutely loved my stay and will definitely be coming back soon! The views were amazing, and the river was the perfect spot to cool off and relax. The entire experience was peaceful and grounding, and the hosts truly went above and beyond. I highly recommend the chair massage—10/10, it was the perfect way to unwind. At the end of my stay, I had some unexpected car trouble, and I was met with such kindness and understanding! Logan was incredibly helpful and made a stressful situation feel much more manageable! I’m so grateful for the care and hospitality—this place really is a must visit. Highly recommend!

It’s a great location. I had a great time. It’s very peaceful. The stream is an added bonus to cool off. Logan and Gear were very helpful. Got to see wildlife and take a tour of their goats. Bjorn was a bonus. This was their dog. I enjoyed his company but they offered to keep him in their home. This was my first solo trip so it was nice to have Bjorn’s company. He kept critters away from the campsite. He accompanied me to the stream, for a short walk and just hung out at the campsite. I had rain one night and Bjorn stayed close by. This is my second trip there and I always feel safe. Will definitely be back.

Enjoyed my one night stay here, wish I had more time! This is a no-frills, straight forward camping area. I loved the landscape and the super dark night skies. The goats were very entertaining, not to mention photogenic! No amenities, just a great place to spend the night!

A family vacation to remember…

We were lucky enough to get the skyview spot. It sits at the top of a gorgeous cactus covered hill where a perfectly beaten path leads you down to the river. There you will find the magic of a largely untouched natural paradise. A flat bottom boat with paddles was available that fit our family of four (mom, dad, and kids (8 & 5)). We took two different trips down river and back and we all agreed it was one of the best highlights(of many) from the weekend. We saw turtles and fish, lizards and even a heron. Which brings me to the farm itself. So much entertainment for the kids (adults too, if we’re being honest). They have silly, cactus-eating goats, clucking chickens, white-feathered turkeys, ducks, a young stallion and the sweetest eeyore of a Shetland pony named Charlie Brown. The two dogs that live on the property narrowly avoided being rehomed to Austin with us. They are the most gentle, friendly farm dogs and our children couldn’t get enough of them. Exploring the land was an adventure for the kids. We found animal bones, picked wildflowers, found a ton of interesting insects, chased lizards and especially enjoyed the hidden labyrinth that is almost complete. The stars were beautiful at night and we slept like babies to the sound of the river. This particular location doesn’t have much shade unless you are down by the water, so make sure to bring a shade tent if possible. Lastly, the owners are a such a welcoming and warm family. We cannot wait to return!

Absolutely stunning campsite right next to the river! Exactly the vibes I was looking for...river sounds - check! wildlife sightings - check! private - check! Did some fishing and simply hung out in the river during the hot parts of the day. One of the best sites I've camped at, incredibly clean with flat surfaces and plenty of nature all around. Logan was incredibly helpful explaining how to get to the site and answering questions I had. Look forward to revisiting and staying here again! As others have mentioned, if you're on the fence on booking this...just do it! You won't be dissapointed!

Such a great space! It was an overcast and stormy weekend so I couldn’t enjoy the stars, will definitely be back though. Hosts were so nice and the other campers were very friendly. You still had privacy even with other campers which I really enjoyed.

Low Gear Farmstead is a great place. It's quiet and campsites are spread far apart. The chair massage was wonderful - highly recommend that! I really enjoyed chatting with Logan and her mom, Lois. The whole place felt very peaceful and I would go back for sure.
