Located at 1400 North U.S. 81/287, just outside of Decatur, this expansive area was established in the late 1940s to repurpose sub-marginal agricultural lands and showcase effective land use strategies. In recent years, an active prescribed burning program has been implemented to manage fuel loads, ensuring the safety of nearby communities while restoring the open landscape reminiscent of the Post Oak Savanna that early pioneers experienced in North Texas. The Grassland is a haven for various recreational pursuits, including hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and bird watching. Additionally, it serves as grazing land for cattle and other livestock, promoting a harmonious balance between recreation and agriculture. Visitors can explore nearly 75 miles of multipurpose trails in the Cottonwood Lake area, catering to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders alike. TADRA Point serves as a designated trailhead camping facility and is a key access point for the LBJ Multi-use Trail system.
