This was my 5th or 6th trip out to the cabin and I plan on returning many times. John is a great host, the lake is really nice with great fishing and swimming, cabin is very stout with good options for cooking and there is also great BBQ nearby in Stephenville. Now, it is rustic and a little wild. If you are scared of spiders or the occasional watersnake, maybe it's not for you but you're missing out! Made lots of great memories out here, highly recommend.

Our family recently had the pleasure of staying at John's cabin, and it was the perfect get away for us. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with the peaceful sound of nature and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The cabin itself was clean, well-equipped, and well furnished, providing all the comforts of home while still maintaining that rustic charm.
We hiked around the property, fished in the lake, and sat around the fire pit at night.
John has beautiful land that feels far away from hustle and bustle of our day to day lives. We would highly recommend this stay for anyone looking to get away.

This place was a great place to gather with our adult children. The cabin is rustic but comfortable with some great amenities and a beautiful view of the pond and ranch land. John is an exceptional host...very accessible and helpful! We loved the jeep ride and his horses, cows and dogs! We are already planning a return trip! Thank you John for a fun weekend!

Our stay was so relaxing! We picked a perfect weekend to fish and kayak out on the lake. The cabin was perfect! John was accommodating to schedule, and even had a nice conversation with him while fishing. Hope to come back soon!

Rustic Log Cabin on Private Lake
The cabin was wonderful and just what we expected! It was very nice and quiet and my family enjoyed it. We stayed fishing on the lake a lot of the time and saw lots of deer. It was an overall great experience and we will definitely go back again.

I hate leaving this review because I don't want to spoil this for others by letting the world know about this place and its owner.
Absolutely amazing. Beyond words. My Wife looked at me one day on the porch swing and said "you did good". Highest praise out there. It's a piece of heaven on earth and John is an amazing host with just the right amount of communication to make you comfortable without feeling managed. Can't say enough about the weekend but would love to do this on a regular basis. Thank you John for making our Memorial day memorable.

If you're scared of bugs this is not the place. If you're scared to camp alone this is the perfect place to find your bravery. The Spruce is safe and secure. If you're looking for a quiet location this is not the place, the frogs are looking for love all night long and you will hear their serenade until the sun comes up. If you want a real Texas experience on a working cattle ranch with a real life handsome cowboy host... look no further. Loved every minute of my stay at the Spruce at J Haggard Lake. Just go!

My husband and I were blessed to stay for an extended weekend at John's ranch in North Central Texas. The cabin had quite a few little touches, that you could definitely tell was a labor of love. We were able to hike some animal trails, fish at the creek, enjoy a nice sit-down meal at the gazebo, warm ourselves by the firepit on chilly night, and simply enjoy all that nature has to offer. As a bonus, we enjoyed watching the free range cows, horses, ect. at the ranch. We absolutely can't recommend it enough!

I don’t think you can a better host than John. He went over the top to make us feel comfortable. We upgraded to a bigger unit. The place was amazing comfortable, we finished and sit out by the fire pit among other things we had a blast and will return soon. Thanks John you’re the Best.

Our recent stay at The Spruce was very enjoyable! The cabin is very clean, in a private and quiet location. We found it to be a small, but important, step up from our many prior tent camping experiences. We appreciated the sink and shower with hot and cold water. Our host John is personable and hospitable. We will be back again!

The property!!!! The Facility!!!! The Wildlife!!! The Fishing!!!! And most importantly …… The Host. My family and I, along with our dog needed a little adventure. We found a last minute availability with Jon and how quickly the cell phone got put away and the adventure began. Our two night stay was not enough time at all. We WILL be back often!!

John was a fantastic host. He was very responsive to questions and gave the best tips to best enjoy his property. His dog, Kimber (I think), was so sweet and followed John everywhere. His horse Cisco (sp?) was so gentle when he came to visit. We went on the Jeep ride through his property which was a blast going through the very rocky terrain.
Fishing was an excellent source of fun as we were catching several types throughout our stay. We loved sitting on the porch looking at beautiful lake, listening to all of the sounds nature had to offer.
The cabin had pretty much everything we needed for our stay. Cooking in the outdoor kitchen was so easy. I was glad there was counter space to cook our meals.
As stated in the description, this is the country. We saw snakes, june bugs galore, spiders everywhere, beavers, ducks and more. Nothing bothered us but we also did not bother them.
We will be returning without a doubt.

John's cabin was perfect for our weekend fishing trip from DFW! The beds were comfy, there were plenty of fish to catch, and the location is just remote enough to feel like you're out of the city and able to see the stars. Would definitely stay again!

My family really enjoyed the spring break at John's cabin. I echo the other reviews. The cabin is just what we expected. John is a great host. The jeep ride was fun and the horse ride was wonderful. The firewood that he provided was dry/seasoned and easy to light up. It was cold and sometimes windy while we stayed, but there are heaters inside the cabin and bathroom and it was comfortable. We caught a plenty of fish. We couldn't ask for more. We will definitely try to come back again.

A gem! Magical! Beyond special. John, his cabin, and his land offer a special hideaway close to town. John was beyond gracious. There is lovely land to explore and plenty of rocks to climb. The porch is ideal for sitting and taking in nature and the bed is comfortable. Keep a eye out for the turtles who offer humor and peace in their sunning themselves and plopping back into the water. We’re sure to return!

You know how they say that dogs are good judges of character? Our dog is usually pretty guarded around new people, especially when our boys are around but he was (surprisingly) totally calm around the host John. John even brought one of his horses over and let our youngest get a ride. The cabin had just about everything you could want and our boys are already asking when we can go back.

My family had a great time at John's cabin! He was very friendly and responsive throughout our trip. My kids (13, 11, and 6) enjoyed the jeep ride with him the most! We loved having the lake and area pretty much to ourselves. There was another couple in John's other cabin, but we hardly ever saw them. My kids loved the paddle boats and kayak! John's cows even came right up to the house one morning for their breakfast. It was fun watching them! We will be going back for sure!

We had such a relaxing weekend at John’s ranch with the tiny cabin right on the lake. It was a cold February weekend but we were well prepared. We plan on going back with family and staying in the bigger cabin. We took our own bottled water (and beer), and didn’t need ice it was so cold, lol. Outdoor kitchen area and shower were great, very nice wrap around porch overlooking the lake, fire pit, and country smoker. Even the Dag loved it.

John was a great host, very welcoming. The cabin was exactly what we expected and more. So many outdoor activities to do. Got to see deer 30 yards away or so. Kayak. Fished. Build a fire first night. Looking forward to go back in the spring.

The spruce cabin and property was awesome! This place is really something else. My girlfriend and I booked the cabin last minute and I’m so glad we did. John is a great host and made us feel like the ranch was ours. John has a little slice of heaven on earth out there and we can’t wait to go back. All the wildlife and views were amazing and I’d say we accomplished our goal of a relaxing/adventures weekend. Thank you again John for everything! Was greeted by John and shown to the cabin. Cabin had all I needed.Complete with AC for the Texas heat,fridge,micro and outdoor cooking stove and sink.Another plus was the bathroom with shower. The land here is awesome! If you love nature and aren't afraid of a few bugs this is an awesome place. I saw deer, lizards,ducks,crane,kingfishers,and my first armadillo and scorpion. Being from Washington state we don't have those there. If I lived in Texas or closer and wanted a get away I would stay here. I give this place a 100 on a scale of 1-100.
