Daffodil Hill Retreat is a few acres in East Texas, near Hawkins. The land has been untouched for about 30 years, maybe last used for cattle grazing. We're keeping the property as natural as possible, we live here off-grid and off-pipe. There’s a 17 acre lake that we share with neighbors. It’s full of bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish, we encourage catch and keep fishing since the lake could use a little fishing pressure. We also have a beaver pond, and resident beaver. Some of the wildlife we see regularly: fireflies, turtles, cardinals, bluejays, hummingbirds, kite birds, frogs, opossums, armadillos, beaver, river otter, road runners and rabbits. These plants live here too: Beautyberry, Dewberry, Pokeberry, Sparkleberry, Dogfennel, Dogwood, Yaupon Holly, Holly, Wax Myrtle, Sassafras , Lyreleaf Sage, Carolina Crane’s bill, Coral Honeysuckle, Western White Honeysuckle, Smooth Cat’s Ear, Daisy Fleabane, Prairie Onion, Mullein, Summer Grape, Water Lily. The entire water lily plant is edible, did you know? Swim, hang out, cool down on the small swimming dock. Canoe and kayak included! Based on shared availability, we have 1 two person canoe, and 3 kayaks for use on our lake free of charge. There are smaller size adult life jackets and oars/paddles. Bring your own life jackets for kids. Contrary to local rumor lol, we are not a “nudist resort”. But it is true that one of our campsites is very private, so one could dress any way they wanted while at that campsite. About the Bees Please do not bring or use any insect killer or insect repellent other than what you apply to your own body. We have several honey bee colonies living here and our neighbor keeps bees as well. For the safety and health of our bees, the use of man made insect killers or repellents on the ground, in the air or on the foliage is absolutely not allowed. One natural remedy is diatomaceous earth. Sprinkled on the ground, it does a good job at keeping ants and crawling creatures away. Brookshire's in Hawkins less than 4 miles away if you need supplies. Verizon, ATT users have cell coverage here, no signal for T-Mobile users. LGBTQ+ friendly.

Beautiful lakeside campsite 🏕
The lakeside campsite was beautiful and restocked with firewood daily. We had plenty of room for two tents and three vehicles. The floating dock provided the perfect spot for sunbathing and fishing. Our boys took the canoe out several times and had great fishing. Sadly, a rainstorm ushered in our last morning, so we did not get to enjoy a final lakeside breakfast. Our whole family agreed that this was spectacular camping trip, and we can’t wait to do it again.

Really enjoyed my stay here! Booked a last minute trip for me and my dog to do some tent camping during a stretch of perfect weather. Lovely campsite near a small lily pad covered pond, with fire ring, picnic table. Plan to return soon and bring my wife along. Nice and quiet with very dark skies, great for watching wildlife and stargazing.

We had a wonderful time at Daffodil Hill! You could not ask for two more gracious hosts. They were there to greet us and gave us a tour of their lovely property. We fished, made campfires and had a wonderful three days!

Like a scene from The Notebook
This was easily my favorite site so far on Hipcamp! The hosts were friendly and accommodating, and the land was gorgeous. Daffodil Hill Lake #1 had a view of the water, nice shady tree coverage, a fire ring, and a large picnic table. We were able to use provided kayaks and a canoe to get on the water, where we went fishing and caught several small fish. The water itself was peaceful, sunny, and even had water lily pads blooming. The composting toilet, while primitive in setup, was clean, well maintained, comfortable, and positioned with a relaxing view. The site felt remote, with only the occasional glimpse of other campers. The only note I'll give is that the lake is pretty small. It's a perfect spot for quietly putzing around or doing some relaxing fishing, but isn't large enough for any distance or more adventurous exploring. If you're looking for space to kayak/canoe instead of just chill, this probably isn't the right spot. 10/10 would recommend!

Awesome fishing for fishing newbs
Fantastic hosts. Property is outstanding. At beaver pond expect to hear an orchestra of wildlife all night. Loved seeing and hearing so many bullfrogs. Good fire ring right by the pond. Fishing was fantastic. I caught almost entirely Bluegill, which I threw back, using medium minnows and snelled hooks. Could catch a fish every 5 min in certain spots, provided the canoe could have been anchored somehow. A canoe anchor would make a great addition. Weather was wonderful and the water was clean and clear down to about 5’.

Wonderful water spot!
Lovely spot with a compostable toilet on site. Amazing fishing and water with access to kayaks and canoes. Other people do live on the small pond so you aren’t totally isolated but still a good spot for an escape from the city!

Perfect in Every Way!
When we first discovered Hipcamp, we told ourselves that we would try out several sites until we found the one we liked. Well we have now gone to Bruce’s sites five times and haven’t tired anywhere else! Daffodil Hill Retreat has everything you could ask for and more: well kept campsites and compositing toilets, a lake full of fish, kayaks, and a accommodating host. We can’t wait to go back again soon! If you’re considering this site, go ahead and book it. You’ll have no regrets!

Beautiful Campsite Near a Lake
This place was an absolute gem. Finding this place was just what we needed. The leaves were SO beautiful which made a morning ride on the canoe magical. Campsite was clean, plenty of space, and we bought some wood on site. Very friendly and a wonderful escape. Besides Bruce and Jose, we didn't see anyone else the entire time. Had it all to ourselves! Definitely will be back!

Overall Good Experience
In general, we had a good experience and are planning to return again in the near future. The Good: - You have access to a private lake to swim and fish, and you can keep what you catch! In addition, there are kayaks and canoes available - Our campsite was pretty well maintained with ample small brush for kindling - In general, you have your own space - The hosts were awesome! Professional, respectful, and exactly what you need in a camping host. They are there if you need them but otherwise give you space to enjoy nature The Not So Good: - There are several dogs in the area, one of which parked their entire night. This made it difficult to sleep - You are not the only campsite on the land. They are semi-private, but our impression when we booked this campsite was that we would be the only ones there. In reality, there are at least three campsites that were all being used while we were there Summary: We had a good time and again, the hosts were great. It wasn't exactly what we expected, but I definitely recommend considering this campsite.

Secluded and Perfect set up!
Such a peaceful and secluded area with a private lake all to ourselves this weekend. Canoeing in the evening and then a kayak exploration around the lake in the morning. The sound of the leaves and trees whistling in the wind was amazing. We even enjoyed the thunder, lightening and heavy rain at 1:00 in the morning. Bruce’s tent held silent and strong against the heavy wind and rain. No rain in the tent and woke up to a beautiful sunny day! Loved not having to pitch a tent and the two twin beds were clean and comfy! Even had fresh wild flowers waiting for us next to the welcome mat! Great experience!

Great Tent, Amenities, and Host!
This is our third time camping on Bruce’s land. We have now stayed at every site he has, and each is great! The tent was very nice and comfortable! It made for a relaxing, set up free weekend of camping. The swimming dock and kayaks are super nice. I highly recommend any of Bruce’s sites!

This campsite was the perfect getaway. Not too remote but still tucked away enough to where you can enjoy nature. My boyfriend and I enjoyed using the kayak and tube provided. There is also a nice dock in the pond which was perfect for reading and lying in the sun. Bruce was very welcoming and helpful in showing us around. We would definitely consider visiting again. :)

Wonderful stay!
Bruce was amazing! We had an amazing time. It is absolutely beautiful, the campsite was clean and the perfect setup. Bruce gave us free firewood which we were absolutely not expecting. There is a swimming dock in the perfect location, we spent hours there. There are multiple kayaks, a canoe, an inner tube, and some homemade fishing poles! Each campsite is very private and removed from the others. Falling asleep to the sounds of nature was incredible, and very unique compared to other camping locations. We decided to not stay the second night because we were far too tired (and forgot our air mattress), but the reason why we were tired was because we had so much fun! Our dog was basically comatose on the way home. Bruce was a great guy, very kind, and made sure we had everything we need. Very attentive. We hope to come back soon
