Cienega Camp is a primitive overlanding area nestled in the panhandle of Big Bend Ranch State Park. Situated on bluffs overlooking Alamito Creek valley and Cienega Mountain, you will enjoy sheer solitude and incredible views of a rarely visited area of the park. Catch a peek of the Chinati Mountains in the distance, marvel at the international dark skies, hike the property, or explore the state park. Cienega Camp is an ideal basecamp or layover for Big Bend adventures. Be advised, Cienega Camp is rugged and remote, not ideal for last minute spring breakers or family trucksters!
Guests must be self-contained overlanders ideally with rooftop tents or sleeping accommodations inside vehicles, as the ground is rocky and not suitable for tents. Accessing Cienega Camp requires 4WD. Guests must drive only on the cleared paths and tread lightly because the soils are alluvial from the ancient Cienega Mountain and erode easily. There are no facilities or amenities, but there is a very good cell signal. All trash, including human and dog waste, must be packed out. Do not destroy vegetation, gather firewood, harvest plants or cacti, disturb or keep artifacts, or be disrespectful to the land. Since only one group is allowed per reservation, it is easy to pinpoint violators. Please do not cross this line with us so that we can keep the site open to other campers.
Cienega Camp is a private inholding and not associated with Big Bend Ranch State Park. It is your responsibility to know the park boundaries. Guests seeking to enter the park on foot or vehicle must purchase day use permits online or at Fort Leaton State Historic Site.
Fires in fire rings only. Inverter-style generators, alcohol, and pets permitted. Dogs may be off leash if under control.
