Communication , instructions on where and how to check in, and the fact that’s it’s a few miles out on gravel roads ( fairly dicey on a motorcycle and would not have booked had I known) then had to go back the same route to get food. So I forwent my $50 and went to American Creek in Chamberlain - only $25. Much nicer and beautiful right on the river.

This is a great place to get away, especially for a road trip. Having access to a bathroom and shower makes such a difference, and the facilities were so clean and so much was provided! We had a wide open space to camp, and went to explore the front area of the lodge in the morning before taking off. The lodge has a lot of information available to guest about the lodge and activities in the area. I would absolutely camp here again, and would look into the lodge rooms as well. Thank you Toni!

We love this place! Toni is the best! Everything about this place is clean and well loved. Each room has 4 beds and a private bathroom. There is a large deck where you can sit and chat and there is a large firepit for the evenings. We are always excited to stay here when passing through SD. Highly recommend!!

Beautiful sweeping pasture with lots of space to pitch your tent. Big beautiful sky. Expanse of low rolling grasslands. Easy in and out. Pleasant host.

DO NOT put the address for the lodge into Google Maps as it will take you to the middle of a corn field.

My family was looking forward to staying here after a 10 hour drive on a long road trip west. I booked it in April for an August stay and other than the confirmation email I didn’t hear back from the host, which normally wouldn’t be a problem. I reached out twice in the 48 hours before our stay to let her know when we’d be arriving and also asked a question about firewood but never heard back. When we arrived the place was booked with a family reunion. They were pretty surprised to hear that we were there with a tent wanting to camp. Contrary to the info in the description, there was no information or map about where to pitch a tent and it wasn’t obvious what was the host’s property. The family reunion folks helped us look for info and I called the phone number but no one answered. We were there for about 40 minutes looking around, trying to figure out what to do. The communal bathrooms and fire pit weren’t an option given that this other group was under the impression they had the place to themselves so all we could do was leave. We ended up at a hotel and the host denied us a refund.

Overall, it was fine. I have some mixed feelings because the directions were unclear as to where to camp. We followed the instructions in the app to the foyer, but there was no camp map there. When we texted the host to ask where to stay, she didn’t text us back for three hours (at 1030 pm), when we had already set up camp and were asleep. The bathroom was clean and the area was nice, it was just a little unclear as to where we’re supposed to be.

Beautiful view! Nice spot to set up camp for a night. Confusing when we first arrived- instructions said to go right into the lodge but the main door was locked, found a side door to enter thru the kitchen, had to find someone to tell us where to go

This visit was balm to our souls and to the dogs, who loved having the space to roam, play, and "protect". Their dogs are adorable and they were instant friends with ours. Given the 4,000 miles we'd already covered we ALL needed the beautiful prairie and the privacy.
We used the sensitive awning on the van to test for "too much wind" before building a campfire and carefully prepped a fire area for our portable fire ring. as part of our process. With the little extra care we got to imagine days gone by for our ancestors.
The wind at night was cooling and also frighteningly awesome. Our last night we got to watch storms come miles across the prairie before crossing over us and making sure our rigs were a South Dakota clean.
It was a perfect 3 days and we were sorry to have to leave.
Great and friendly hosts who were absolutely non-intrusive and full of good natured humor. We highly recommend.

First things first do not use google maps to find the lodge.
We enjoyed our stay. The lodge is really pretty. There was hunters staying so we did not have access to the kitchen but we made do. The laundry was a plus and the kids enjoyed ping pong. Nice stop and I would stay again.

Gun range with explosions.

Toni was delightful, the bathroom was clean and inviting, the endless views of the field land were beautiful.
I didn't realize prior to booking that this was also used as a gun range. Before sunset a bunch of younger guys gathered on the lodge's back patio and started shooting at targets several hundred yards away on a hill top. Someone would then ride a UTV out past where we were camped and reset them 4-5 times over a 2 hour period or so. We explained it away to our 2 kids as normal SD stuff and tried to ignore it. However shortly before dark, they shot at something that exploded which shook our van and caused us all to jump up thinking at first we'd been shot at. They didn't shoot at us, and it was a reasonable 100-200 yards away, but it was close enough to really freak our kids out.
If you're into guns and explosions with your sunsets, this is your place. If you're not, that's why I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.

So this is a gun range. Found out in the middle of the night and my husband was completely freaking out. It was safe but we wish we had known.

Great greeting from our hosts. Our dog and their two hit it right off. Great facilities and they were very flexible as we were the only guests that night. We were just traveling thru. The beauty and majesty of a night sky out on the plains of North Dakota is wonderfully calming. There was a great communal fireplace with great seating and firewood provided. The owners are experienced hosts. For a wide-open, as in the horizons, it can’t be beat!

We were the only campers the night we stayed. It was exactly as described. So peaceful and the stars, oh my! It was a beautiful clear night for stargazing. Toni was spot on with her directions. Bugs were minimal, heard pheasants in the morning.

This was a peaceful site for the night, when the RV parks closer to town were all full. The shower was delightful after several days of boon-docking. It was interesting to see yellow-headed cowbirds and ring-necked pheasants. Toni was very responsive and nice.
Only two minor improvements would have made 5 stars, in our opinion. First, a picnic table or two in the designated camping area would have been greatly appreciated. Second, some simple signage to guide Hip Campers to the areas in the field where they’re supposed to set up. We were a little confused when we arrived and were unsure about driving between the lodge, garage buildings, and skeet shooting range where several vehicles were parked. We did peek into the foyer for camping maps as instructed but only saw brochures for the lodge. We may have missed something after a long day’s drive.

I was looking for a quiet spot to stop on a cross-country move, so I reserved a room in the lodge. It was clean and comfortable, with a sparkling bathroom. Exceeded expectations. I've recommended this place since to family, and I would stay here again as a stop or as a destination itself, especially with a group of friends.

Great spot for the night. Fantastic views, amazing sunrise. Toni was very nice and let us upgrade to a room so we didn’t get soaked in the storm. My kids loved it and so did I. I’d definitely stop through again.

Camping is in a farm field near a lodge. Nice place to stay not too far from the highway, but still very secluded. Stars were very clear at night and the sunrise was beautiful! Beware of the wind forecast if you have a tent because there's very little shelter in this flat area.

Directions provided were not correct. I tried to contact the host, but call could not complete. I sent a text and got no response. When I finally arrived a bit after midnight, it was not a camp ground but a backyard - not what I expected based on the cost and description. I contacted the host, explained my need and concern. Since I was coming in late at night, and could not get contact with the host, I left and found a different place for the night. I asked for a refund, but was told no refund.
