Clear-cut in the early 1700's, this forest has been growing ever since. The wood once provided charcoal for the historic Pine Forge which, built in 1716, was the first forge in Pennsylvania.  Once the deepest coastal frontier settlement in the colonies, Pine Forge would go on to provide ammunition in support of the continental army in the Revolutionary War.  In 1734 Daniel Boone was born only five miles away at the Boone family homestead, once the forge's only neighbor.  Today these properties represent the northernmost reaches of the Hopewell Big Woods, the largest contiguous forest in Southeastern Pennsylvania.  The area is considered part of the Schuylkill Highlands and Pine Forge is a stop along both the Iron and Steel Trail and the Forging Freedom Tour as designated by the National Iron and Steel Heritage Museum.      Today the Forge has been transformed into a private school and the valley is a quiet swath of forest that follows the nearby Manatawny Creek.  In 2008 we were fortunate enough to add three steeply-pitched, wooded acres to our property. The higher land overlooks a small quiet valley secluded from its surroundings.  Once the properties were joined, I was determined to move the stones needed to clear a path that would traverse them both.  When I found the perfect place, I moved boulders, rocks and dirt for two weeks to create a small level campsite.  Eight years and thousands of stones later, the trail to the site was completed in 2016. The result is something much more elegant than I had envisioned.  In 2019 a second, much larger camping area was added by popular demand to accommodate bigger groups and larger tents. The trees have grown back big and tall since those colonial times, and the Ironwood Trail leads to a beautiful place hidden among them.

As many hipcamps are, this site was located more or less in a backyard. The trek up the trail did help to provide some privacy. The host was very generous and responsive. Although we were warned, I was unable to sleep with the constant mooing by the neighboring cows. They seemed to conveniently move pastures by the morning.

Well maintained and stocked site
This private campsite was great spot to explore the French Creek Park and Birdboro Preserve. The area also had some unexpectedly fun dining options. The site was well maintained and the host clearly cared about us having a great experience — down to making sure we had ample firewood and water supply.

Beautiful, secluded camping!
I highly recommend this beautiful, secluded campsite. The sites are masterfully prepared for campers to comfortably enjoy the space. The trail leading to the sites is pleasing and delightful and left me awestruck. Seeing the trail is worth the visit alone! David, the host, has thought of everything for his guests and couldn’t be any nicer. It was a pleasure meeting him.

Solo hammock camping
I really enjoyed my stay! David was great. He greeted me on arrival and provided a comprehensive orientation. After which I enjoyed two days of peaceful solitude. Had I needed anything, David said he was just a text away. I did not need to take advantage of them, but this site has an abundance of amenities in case you forget anything. This Hipcamp has been added to my favorites. I look forward to returning some day and will share it with friends.

Relaxing Time
We had just one night but loved every bit of our time. David was a great communicator and made sure we had all we needed. The camp site is exactly as described and he clearly took great efforts to ensure the area is safe and well marked up the trail. We camped in the top area since that fit our tent a bit better. Based on some of the other reviews we hit up Hidden River Brewing nearby and had some good beers that we were able to also bring back to the campsite. I would definitely recommend it!

Beautiful sites!!
We had a great visit here! Awesome camp sites. Well maintained with a number of chairs, fire pits, etc. Was a decent walk, about 1000 ft with some elevation, up to the sites. There were some neighboring properties so you had to mind the noise you were making. The host gave clear instruction and the rules, property lines, use of equipment, etc, were easy to follow.

My stay at Ironwood was amazing. Everything was well prepared for and marked by David during my stay. The "hike" is about 3-4 minutes to your site, which makes the arrival to the site even better because you had to work for it! While I didn't use any of the supplies provided besides firewood, there was plenty in the bin in case I forgot my cooking items, games or other things. There are sounds like the train, the cows, neighbors, occasional cars, but it wasn't enough to deter me from a good night's sleep. I look forward to staying here again!

Private, cozy, and intimate
David was a fantastic host. Very personable, kind, welcoming, enthusiastic, appreciative and genuine. You can tell David put a lot of time and energy into making the Ironwood Trail & Private campsite special. There were two campsites and I really enjoyed both of them and their views. The upper campsite was bigger and more open. The lower campsite, where we stayed, was private and cozy. The fire pit was a metal fire pit which was surprisingly nice to have and had two lawn chairs waiting for us along side a wooden log we used as a prep station for our food. It was perfect size to put a tarp down and a solo tent, any bigger size tent you might want to consider the upper campsite. We camped Sunday night into Monday morning and we did hear a bus and some cars on their way to work and school on the close by road. We also heard a plane go over our heads. We really enjoyed how private it was and comfortable we felt at the campsite. Thank you David for having us and I would recommend this to anyone that is looking to get started with camping and for those who are looking to practice for longer hikes and camping adventures,(ex. multi. day hikes, hike, camp, hike, camp type of thing). All the best, David! Keep up the good work! Sophie - 7/10 (rookie score) “i feel like we were close to things” Kevin - 8.3/10 (not my first rodeo) “private, cozy, and intimate”

Perfect spot for a weekend escape
My boyfriend and I stayed one night at Ironwood and had such a great experience. David is so welcoming and has thought of every detail to make your trip wonderful. From the reflective trail markers to the perfectly swept tent pad. He also keeps a box of supplies just in case which came in handy when I ran out of propane for my camp stove. Having some extra on hand saved the day! We definitely plan on coming back for a longer stay at this beautiful property.

I went solo.
This was my very first solo trip staying the night and David was a wonderful host. He filled me in on all the surrounding areas and possible sounds. I got the best sleep of my life up there. The hill is definitely steep but it’s not a long journey at all. I felt comfortable enough to hang in the hammock under the moon light and the supply chest had just the right things for me that I forgot. The stores near by were very helpful too.

10/10
David was an excellent host. Incredibly friendly and accommodating. I spent two nights at this site by myself and felt totally comfortable. The site itself is very secluded at the top of a hill and exactly as pictured. The hike up is short but steep so pack light to avoid making multiple trips! Close driving distance to anything you may need (food, drinks, gas, etc) as well as French Creek State Park which I explored both days. I had an excellent time and look forward to coming back!

Amazing as always! Returning camper
This is my second time staying at Ironwood this season. As last time David was an AMAZING host! Despite the stays being rather close together, I noticed improvements made. They wouldn’t have made or break my stay, but it told me that David is always working on improving campers experiences. I can’t say enough positive things! I will back next season… or maybe one more time this one :) PS please see previous review for more info.

Campsite was very pretty. I loved being in the dense woods with no visible reminder of other humans. I could really imagine I was actually backpacking in the wilderness, but of course with amenities, like torches and a fire pit, that are usually inaccessible in the wilderness. Highly recommended.

Return Guest
This was my second stay at Ironwood. It was wonderful to see the place in all it’s glory as the last time I visited there was a blanket of snow. David is a gem of a host, so friendly, and goes above and beyond. Private, supplies galore if your forget anything, and David is so fast to respond if you need something. My enjoyable experience matched the first time only this time I opted to have water provided. (So good!) I also utilized the torches and they were wonderful in combatting the pesky gnats. It truly is a special place and I can’t wait for yet another return!

We had a wonderful time! We stayed in August during a hot and humid heatwave and felt comfortable at the top of the camp site. There was plenty of shade and a nice breeze that came through. David was awesome with the communication. Everything was easy to figure out and went smoothly. The camp site is great! The supplied water was much appreciated! We would love to come back again!

Best camping experience so far!
This was my first time using this app and renting from David. I had a lot of questions which David patiently and quickly answered. I honestly can’t say enough amazing things about the camp site and David. First the site was AMAZING!! The top site is huge and perfectly laid out. There’s a ton of room and the views are great. It was so quiet (minus completely normal low level sounds of farm animals random other infrequent sounds). Perviously I have only been to state parks with the noise at this site was 1/50th of the noise. I really appreciated the beauty and calmness. The box that holds back up supplies was really helpful. I didn’t think I would need anything but was wrong. In addition to this box, there are items you can obtain via a donation (tooth paste for example). Other times camping I don’t want to even think about the amount of times that I’d get set up and than have to run out and get some small but important thing I forgot. David was an amazing host. I honestly got the impression that he wants guests to have the most enjoyable time they can and he makes every effort to make that happen. Going way above and beyond to make that happen. The carving out of trails and creating the two camp sites was done by hand over years and it’s very very clear that this was a labor of love. The path to the two sites is a bit of a workout (coming from an overweight guy) and I brought way to much stuff which required me to make a few trips up and down. With that in mind though, during my time camping I evaluated what I needed and didn’t need as I had decided I wanted to come back for additional camping opportunities. In summary I had an amazing time and felt refreshed when I left. Even your even thinking about possibly renting this site, DO IT. You won’t be disappointed :)

great little get away!
My boyfriend, our puppy Finley, and I had a great little camping trip at David’s spot! It was very peaceful and private, including very pretty and woodsy scenery. Was only a few minutes away from anything you could need, from coffee trips to groceries. David was a great host, good communication, and made us feel very welcomed. He even offered us portable phone chargers and jugs of water for the campsite. He made it a very easy trip, considering he sold us ice and bundles of wood whenever he was home, and even dropped it off half way up the trail for us. We had an amazing stay for a good price and would highly recommend staying here!!

This camping site is the perfect local hideaway. It is so peaceful and beautiful. David has taken all the trouble out of camping. Anything you may have forgotten is already there. We were able to just sit back and enjoy nature, it was the perfect overnight reset trip. It’s a bit of a hike up to the site but totally worth it!! Go enjoy nature and take in the beautiful surroundings. Thank you David for sharing your little piece of paradise.

Ironwood is a beautiful and very rustic site but, fair warning, it is not for the faint hearted! The trek up to the site is definitely a bit of a bear so do not plan to bring lots of or heavy equipment. The lower site is a nice hangout spot; although we did not actually use it. The upper site is spacious and well designed. It was quiet and secluded. And David was there to meet us right away to give us the full run down. He is a fantastic host. I would definitely recommend this site but, keep in mind, pack lightly! :-)
