Another great stay at Matthews Hip Camp!! We stayed here for the first time almost exactly a year ago, and the untouched nature of this place was just as magical! The only difference were the great camp markers and fire rings-- much appreciated!! The creek was warm and so fun to splash around in! It's so lovely hearing the sounds of the creek while we sat at our camp site! We had a great time even though we had a severe thunderstorm the second night we were there! We'll be back, and maybe we'll get a little luckier with the weather next time! Pro tip for this camp: If it's been rainy, bring firewood in!! The lush trees and vegetation make this place magical, but also a bit damp! Last year it was tough to find dry wood in the forest so we brought some with us this year, very helpful since it was a wet weekend!!

Very primitive, just what we needed

We will be back. This is a great primitive camping area with lots of space between the 4 sites. It says 4x4 is needed and YES it is. We stayed at site 4 in the back and its muddy and lots of brush but we loved it. We saw a bald eagle, deer and there were signs of turkeys. We slept well and the kids and us enjoyed the creek.

Absolutely gorgeous! The water running along side the cliffs is a must see, and we were lucky enough to spot a bald Eagle hanging out on one of the dead roots. We got to hear some bobcat noises at night too. We drove in a small car and was still able to get our car down to our campsite (there was no rain). Thank you for having us!

We actually did not get to camp at Matthew’s camp. It rained like crazy and we did not have the proper tires on our camper van. But, we did go to the site, checked them all out, picked number 1 and then we wanted to go to Presque Isle. When we tried to leave; we had a rough time getting out due to the rain/mud and decided we had to find higher ground. But, Matthew was great and accommodating. He would have come and pulled us out if we needed it. And, he does warn that the dirt road can be quite slippery after the rain. It is a nice location and the creek looks like great fun.

This was a very peaceful spot in the middle of the woods. We camped here for a night and then went to Lake Erie the next morning. I would recommend bringing camping chairs, we forgot those and there’s nothing to sit on around the fire pit. Would love if there was a picnic table!!

Beautiful spot right next to a river. We aren’t fly fishermen but it looks like heaven on earth if you are. Matthew is a great host- very responsive and very clear instructions. Hope to stay again someday.

This was a perfect getaway spot. Matt was super responsive to any messages. Land is beautiful and well maintained. I felt very safe here as a solo female camper. Will definitely be back

The camping was very peaceful. We liked the open woods. The creek was beautiful. The gated road made us feel very secure. Lots of birds singing in the morning. There were signs on tree trunks marking the campsites. An outhouse would have been nice, but we made doo.

Matthew’s woods was exactly what we expected. The sites and space were lovely, and there was plenty of seclusion even with nearby campers. Matthew himself was a communicative and accommodating host. Would camp again!

Amazing spot, super accommodating host. Being next to the river was a treat, nothing like sleeping with the sound of moving water nearby. Every site had a fire ring and was well maintained. I will definitely return!

We had such a blast. The camp site was tricky to find in the dark, under all the leaf cover, but we did it. It was peaceful and quiet. Just as expected. I can't wait to come back. What a gem!

This place is on a stocked steelhead stream, it was perfect. Nice and quiet and right outside of town. This was a quick single day stop for me as I passed through. Enjoyed the fishing and was positioned in the trees in fall. Can't beat that

The perfect spot to temporarily go MIA. Primitive camping with a great fly fishing area, as well as rockhounding. Directions were spot on and no issues whatsoever. Matt is a great host and was very responsive with any pretrip questions. I'll definitely be back when in the area.

Overall it was okay, that was mainly because we were just sleeping and eating there for one night but, there wasn’t enough space to set up our tent well. We were also a bit uncomfortable with the fact we were camping on a pet cemetery. But there is a nice creek in the back though!

This is an absolutely incredible forest of healthy old hardwoods that is shaded, quiet and secluded. Feels like camping in the middle of nowhere woods. Best part was the old trees. I’ll come back for this place next time I pass through!

It's a nice area. Little confusing on where you are supoosed to camp.
There is a perminate site set setup for the owners priest.
Overall it was a nice stay, I'd reccomend bringing a rake.

This place is a true gemstone! Loads of good camping, beautiful scenery, great communication with host. We drove into the woods right up to our camp spot right on elk creek. Very private, quite, and full of good firewood. Would 100% recommend this to those who like primitive camping. Very close to Erie!

A last minute overnight spot to car camp while heading west across the country. Super responsive host, was able to accommodate a last minute arrival (granted, on a rainy Sunday night, so plan ahead!). Very rustic, but I don’t know why you’d expect any different! It’s just a beautiful, safe, secluded natural space off the beaten path, no bells or whistles. As a solo woman traveller, I get spooked when I need to car camp, so this afforded me a feeling of safety and seclusion — I knew that no one was just going to stumble across me out here! Especially on a rainy Sunday night, it was nice knowing I was the only person out there. Since the rain was torrential, I just car camped on the access road at the top of the site — glad I did or I’m afraid I would have gotten stuck in the mud trying to leave in the morning! You’ll probably lose service a few minutes before arriving to the site, but it’s not too bad. Really beautiful spot though, lots of wildlife and incredible forest cover. Check it out if you just need a safe and natural spot to pitch a tent or car camp!

Beautiful spot, the river is right down the path and there’s an awesome overlook. Good spots in the woods. Mathew was a super cool guy and very welcoming. I’d absolutely stay here again if I’m ever back in the area.
