For over fifty-five years, the Adams & Croyle Township Recreation Authority has lovingly maintained this park, nestled just ten minutes from US Route 219 in the breathtaking Allegheny Mountain Range. The park is not only a recreational haven but also a historical site, with nearby landmarks such as the old South Fork Dam, the Little Conemaugh River, and the historic Lake Conemaugh basin, which serve as poignant reminders of the Johnstown Flood that reshaped the region. The Johnstown Flood National Memorial is conveniently located adjacent to the park, adding to its historical significance.
In a collaborative effort with Natural Biodiversity and the National Wildlife Federation Habitat Stewards Project, the 1889 Park successfully reintroduced over fifty native plant species between 2006 and 2007. This initiative aimed to enhance the park's natural beauty and restore the area's biodiversity, making it a vibrant spot for nature enthusiasts.
