STARGAZING + AMAZING VIEWS: Our place sits on five acres overlooking the middle fork of the Malheur River, surrounded by cattle ranches. Our nearest neighbor is about 2 miles away, we're remote, but accessible... if you don't mind a couple of miles of gravel road. We're in a dark spot, perfect for laying out in the lounge chairs and admiring the Milky Way in an indescribable setting. At night, the only lights visible truly are the moon and stars. Bring your telescope if you've got one! COOKING + DINING: Prepare your meals in our simple, yet functional outdoor kitchen. There's camp stove, picnic table, wash station, and firepit*. The water spigot is located at the north end of the cabin porch. This is a shared area, but we rarely have both accommodations booked at the same time. We've recently decided to make our DELUXE CAMP KITCHEN complimentary**! You won't have to worry about bringing cookware, dishes, cutlery, knives, cutting boards, a can opener, a bottle opener, basic seasonings, or dish washing necessities! **We just ask that you let us know when a seasoning or condiment is running low and that you please wash and return everything to its original spot to avoid an additional cleaning fee of $35. *Please don't use the firepit if a burn ban is in effect. SHOWERING + WHATNOT: Enjoy a luxurious shower in our outdoor shower house, complete with skylight and on-demand hot water. Towels are provided. The building also contains a fabulous composting loo. On the rare occasion that we also have guests staying in the other site, we'll try to coordinate so that you don't disturb each other. We'll communicate with both parties and try to come to a shower schedule that works for everyone. PETS: We welcome your furbabies! Please be advised that there is an additional fee per pet, payable as a Hipcamp "extra" or in good ol' American greenbacks. Please pick up after your pets and try to keep them in your area. We ask that you do not allow your pets on the furniture -- if we find that they've been allowed on the bed, we will require you to pay for the replacement of the bedding at a cost of $300. We have two dogs, an exuberant 150 pound Newfoundland named Hagrid, a little ankle-biting mutt named Hugo, multiple free roaming cats, and three semi-feral children who may be outside. If you are bringing your pet(s), please contact us prior to arrival. HORSES: We have two pastures available if you'd like to bring a trusty steed, or several, on your trip! They're both about two acres (barbed wire fenced) and are right below the main house/cabin. We also have parking for your horse trailer, just let us know ahead of time so that we can have the gates set and the troughs filled! SUSTAINABILITY: We're kinda into crunchy stuff like solar power, composting, sustainability, salvage/upcycling/recycling, and supporting local farmers - artisans - businesses. You'll find that many of the little touches on our replace reflect those values. CHARITY IRONWORKS: If you see or hear Tom puttering around out in the blacksmith shop, you’re welcome to go over and visit. If you need gifts for the folks back home or souvenirs from your epic trip, we also have a selection of our blacksmithing and other unique wares available -- just ask us and we’d be happy to show you our stock. We also offer our 3 Hour Blacksmithing Basics Workshop with Tom. Age 12+ - payable as a Hipcamp "extra" or in cash money. *SUMMER/FALL: PLEASE CONTACT US ABOUT THE WORKSHOP PRIOR TO BOOKING - Tom is a wildland firefighter and his availability will be dependent on fire activity.* OTHER THINGS TO NOTE... There IS cell phone reception here - Verizon works best and there's usually 2-3 bars of LTE. We're in the Pacific Time Zone... But while you're here your phone will probably ping off of a tower located in the Mountain Time Zone, so if you're not sure what time it is, just ask! We have lots of complimentary maps and brochures available to help you explore the local sights and cuisine. We're always happy to give recommendations to our favorite haunts. Did we mention that we're remote? And that the nearest grocery store is at least an hour away? STOCK UP: Either in Vale if you're coming from the east, Burns if you're coming from the west, or John Day if you're coming from the north. We're about 15 minutes from the Malheur National Forest, 30 minutes from Beulah Reservoir, and an hour and a half from Steens Mountain. BE COOL: Please don't allow your pets on the beds or furniture. Please don't smoke in the cabin, bus, OR in the shower house. Please don’t take the bedding or pillows out of the bus or cabin. Please don’t cook in the bus or cabin. Please wash and return the deluxe camp kitchen pieces to their designated spot. Please don’t put anything in the loo except TP, sawdust, and your business. We only mention it because, well, we’ve had people do a few sketchy things in the past. We’re sure you’re super cool and would never do anything like that, but we kinda gotta say it anyway. We don't want to have to give you a poor review and/or charge you extra cleaning and damage fees, and we're sure that'd be a bummer for you, too. **SHOWER AVAILABILITY DEPENDENT ON WEATHER.**

Beautifully restored, our bright and rustic honeymoon cabin is a cozy and peaceful retreat -- it comes stocked with a coffee press, electric kettle, a nicely sized mini fridge, and a camp kitchen setup for cooking in our outdoor kitchen. SLEEPING ACCOMODATIONS: The rustic cabin has a queen size bed and a small pullout couch (suitable for children or small adults). If you would like to book more than two adults, please contact us about our other listing - MALHEUR BASECAMP: SKOOLIE HAVEN. We now have AIR CONDITIONING! There are extra blankets, insect repellent, and cleaning supplies in the cabinet next to the fridge. (Please do not remove the blankets or pillows from the cabin.) Sabrina and Tom were such kind and generous hosts! The cabin was cozy, the views and quiet and being off the grid for a few days was phenomenal! No cell phone service. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We enjoyed our stay.

Astrophotography option

I recently did a search for dark sky spots in eastern Oregon with a cabin and stumbled across this option by Sabrina and Tom and it did not disappoint. The views from NE to SW were wide open unobstructed which was perfect for what I had in mind. The ground was slightly uneven but that's why you own a tripod. Sabrina's husband Tom was always within a shout if anything was needed. If you plan on stargazing or doing a little astrophotography all night, check with the host regarding mosquitos. A head netting can make the experience much more enjoyable if they are out. The cabin is as cute and cozy as advertised. I plan on going back next month before the weather turns to get a few more images.

I loved the cabin on Sabrina’s Land! The views were breathtaking; the escape from reality was exactly what we needed . I wouldn’t change anything about our stay. The family were very kind ; responsive and the farm dogs were a joy to play with.

Off the beaten path—worth it!

Cozy and quiet overlooking a valley ranch land. Arrived in a downpour so it was great not to be in a tent! The cabin is set up simply but has everything well thought out. Worth the extra few miles!

Listing should mention that there are cats around the property. Our dog did not get along with the cat that wouldn't leave the porch. Additionally, said cat kept trying to climb into the gas stove on the porch when I was using it. Cat was awesome otherwise. Hope it is loved. I don't believe there is heating in the cabin, so that should also be known. Space is nice. Shower was hot as promised, and facilities were clean. Garbage can had no bag, so not sure if we put our trash in the appropriate place. There were snacks and water available to us. Host Tom was awesome as he helped us push our van into the sun in the morning so the engine could warm up when we were having trouble. Thanks, Tom! Sorry I knocked the shower head off the pipe.

Serene and beautiful getaway

This Adorable log cabin is a perfect getaway. I brought my 8 year old son, his friend and our dog. There is a deck out front to sit and take in the beautiful countryside. The yard of the cabin is fully fenced with fruit trees and berry bushes and the hum of bees was music to my ears. The outdoor bathroom and shower is sooo cute and showering in it felt luxurious. The landscape around there is unbelievable. Bring your camera, leave the screens at home. It’s a perfect place for a writers or artist retreat.

It's a great spot in the middle of nowhere! Sabrina and Tom were great, and the kids too. Beautiful views, and quiet. Great gravel roads for this cyclist - I need to get back there to really plan some routes. We stayed here between camping spots in Idaho and Bend, and it was just as peaceful, but with a delightful shower and shelter.

Rustic, and remote, but that’s the whole point! The stars were so beautiful! And the blacksmithing was awesome. The only downside was the heat, and the fact that if you wanted to do anything anywhere other than the cabin, it required a bit of a drive. Still, it was a great trip. The disconnect from cell service and screens was much needed.

Sweet cabin was so sweet! Tucked into the hills in Central OR it offered the perfect one night getaway between the Grand Tetons and Crater Lake. Cabin was cozy and the little front lawn was a great place to hang out in the evening and morning. Owners are blacksmith/coppersmith artists so don't miss a chance to check out and buy their wares!

Our stay was perfect! The cabin is indeed sweet.. and had everything we needed. We enjoyed long bike rides.. along with listening to the birds and viewing the stars. Their dog, Hagrid is the absolute sweetest dog in the world. He made my trip!

I loved my stay at this sweet little cabin perched on a hill overlooking cattle fields and rolling hills. The sunrise and set and stars were most definitely epic. It was relaxing clean and comfortable and I enjoyed interacting with the kids, though I really felt they respected my space. I would definitely come back :)

This is a very pretty hidden valley. But an easy drive off the main highway! Loved spying sandhill cranes in the creeks along the road driving in. And listening to some at night from the cabin! Really a special place.

Nothing Short of Incredible!!

Sabrina and Tom were fabulous hosts and I had such a great time staying at their cabin. The communication was super easy and quick and I found both the location and the cabin to be much better than the photos. The location is ideal - private and peaceful but not too remote and easily accessible with a passenger vehicle. It made for a great base camp while I spent several days exploring the nearby forests/hikes. Tom was extremely helpful and gave great recommendations for nearby day trips. I felt lucky to have found such a great place to stay and the night sky was truly something else!! Would absolutely recommend to stay there!

We loved our stay at Malheur Base Camp! I only wish we could've stayed longer. Sabrina and Tom were wonderful hosts and beyond kind to our family. Our girls loved exploring the land and playing with the wild kittens. The cabin is really cosy and has all the things you need for a comfortable stay. The shower was so nice and super warm. The night sky was very clear and the stars were unbelievably bright.

Great place to stay. Comfy bed and adorable cabin. Cute cats and cows and other animals around. Lots of good day trips from here. Friendly family. The cabin is directly next to their house but they kept to themselves as we did also. All in all this place was a catch! Awesome experience and would recommend to anyone!

Our family of four loved our stay here! It was exactly what we had in mind - remote, scenic farmland. The cabin was cute and loaded with everything we needed, including bottled waters, snacks, teas, a mini-fridge, books, games, little fans and extra blankets. We also loved the bathroom and especially the shower! The shower was better here than at any other place we stayed on our Eastern Oregon trip. Sabrina and Tom’s model for sustainability and living on a farm is something to be admired. And it was especially eye-opening for our city kids. The night we arrived, we were greeted with farm kittens - a huge highlight. Another was the blacksmithing class!! A must!! We hope to return again soon and would highly recommend this place.

We stayed two nights here, using it as base camp to explore the Malhuer Wildlife refuge and Steens Mountain. The cabin and wall tent were clean and well stocked, the location was stunning and our hosts were awesome. We will be back.

It truly was an awesome shower. Also a lovely little cabin. There are two ways to deal with Eastern Oregon. One is to grit your teeth and rush through it. That leads to a pretty grim drive. The other is stop and experience it in all its emptiness. That led to a lovely night in a nice quiet place and an awesome shower. :-) Hosts are friendly and available but respectful of distance. The view is lovely. Cabin is pretty close to the main house, but feels private. We really enjoyed our stay and are happy we made the decision to stop.

Lovely cabin! Very cozy and comfortable and the special touches were appreciated. The shower was truly epic and we loved the composting toilet. The hosts were so responsive and helpful whenever we had questions. Highly recommend as a more private and unique alternative to a hotel if you are passing through this area!
