Bucking Horse Ranch
Bucking Horse Ranch had absolutely stunning views. From the top where we camped, there were 360 degree views. It was peaceful, quiet and the views were amazing! I will say that it was quite tricky to find it but a couple neighbors were helpful! Definitely not wise to find in the dark. We never had the chance to meet Robert. Maybe next time! I'd love to come back...

Highly recommend!
This place is amazing! The directions Robert provided were easy to follow. Probably a good idea for your vehicle to have clearance as you do go up some pretty steep terrain to arrive at the top. The views were incredible, especially sunset and night sky.

This was our second time staying with Robert at the Bucking Horse Ranch. This is a very special place and we're thankful to Robert for hosting us (again!). The road up to the top is a bit of a climb, but well worth it. When you reach the top, you're above almost everything and have a front row seat to the valley and the nightly stars. A beautiful place to connect with nature.

We had a booking with Robert and all over the listing it says to call him before arriving. We called him several times and sent many, many messages and he did not respond until the day after our booking "ended." He then refused to refund us. Don't recommend booking here.

Yep, it's really the best view ever
I'm really glad we went in a Jeep; the road was seriously steep and rocky. I was a little concerned that we'd have a hard time finding the place, since the conversation with Robert about directions was long and winding. But it turned out to be pretty straightforward once we turned off 26. I would definitely return, and definitely recommend this spot. The views are magical.

Breathtaking! Easily my favorite camp spot ever. I think I really enjoyed having the space all to ourselves. That was the bonus! I would definitely look to book without the a site without others there so you experience it in the quiet. Directions aren’t tricky - you just have to take notes when you speak with Robert. He’s a kind man and was very descriptive. I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving a sedan or car without 4x4 especially when it rains but definitely do able! Just prepare for a slow (slow!) climb. And be sure to arrive before dark there’s almost no way you could do that drive (the first time) without daylight. Lovely spot - definitely booking again!

Kind host, beautiful location
Robert is an excellent host and we're grateful to have experienced his ranch. He was kind and welcoming and provided directions to his place. It's a bit of a trek up the hill, but manageable. The view from the top is about as good as it gets. The land is pristine, well cared for and still retains just enough wild to feel like you're stepping into another world. Highly recommended.

Prfect camping spot 4 painted hills
We were hiking and traveling to explore the John Day fossil bed area and Robert's piece of land was a perfect location. You do need a good 4x4 to go on a dirt road for about 4 miles once you get onto cougar mountain road to the camping location but it is totally worth it. It was a beautiful piece of land that comes with incredible views and its dead quiet. There are no signs to get there along the dirt road, so we had to trust Robert's directions to get there and also trusting our natural sense of finding places.. I recommend going to the campground way before the sunset before it gets dark. Otherwise it will be super hard to find. If you want to experience a true getaway experience from the city and camping in the middle of beautiful nowhere, this is it!

Great spot.....once you find it..
This property is UNREAL! It is absolutely on the top of the world and is worth the drive up there. That having been said, some of the grandeur was lost because whoever came before us didn't think it was important enough to pack out their trash, so critters had gotten in to it and it was all over the middle of the campground. (Pack it out all!) Even though he did not cause it, it would have been cool for Robert to have tidied up (we sent him a text - close to cleaning up ourselves but used TP was over the line). Make sure to get detailed directions days/weeks before you head out. We attempted to call Robert from town as instructed (walked up & down main street for signal) and then only found the place because we asked for directions in the restaurant and a diner happened to live on the road & 2) once on the road, we got led up the 3mi of gravel road by a neighbor. We never would have found it on our own and we did not hear back from Robert until the next day. All in all, the site was worth it. It's beautiful. We will plan further ahead next time & hope there isn't trash strewn around. Maybe we'll even meet Robert (never saw him!)

Breathtaking views and unstoppable stargazing. I literally thanked my lucky stars for finding this place — the bumpy roads, 2 flat tires (our fault - we sh have not waited to replace our tires!!), and spotty cell service were eclipsed by the amazing vistas and lovely camping site. Cannot wait to try and come back here in future years but with a big Ford 4x4!!!!

Breathtaking Views!
This place blew our minds! Where you END UP is worth the trip, but HOW you get there may be stressful for some. Make sure you concentrate on the directions given by Robert. We are college-educated and good listeners, and we still needed the help of two neighbors to get us to the right spot. Facilities are rustic—I would have appreciated at least a cloth cover to drape the outhouse, since other campers were nearby. However, the view was spectacular!! It was so peaceful to look down and see the tiny details of the Painted Hills below—sometimes it reminded me of the Grand Canyon! It can get windy, so be sure to tie your tent or canopy down. Bring enough water. Truly, the views from this highest point in the area took our breath away. We stayed at 4 Hipcamps on this trip and this one had the BEST VIEW by FAR!

Amazing Camping With Insane Views
Robert's Bucking Horse Ranch was incredible. The views were draw-dropping. Our Subaru Impreza made the trek up the dirt road with zero issues and although Robert's directions seemed funny on paper they make perfect sense when driving to the campsite. This is extremely remote camping so make sure you bring plenty of water and food for the duration of your stay. The ground is pretty rocky so you may want to bring some extra cushioning like towels, an extra sleeping bag, etc. Also, I recommend leaving dogs at home ONLY because the property had tons of little cactuses. They are easy for people to spot but maybe not for your fido. Lastly, it does get windy but we loved it because we camped in high 90's heat! We found shade behind the trees and enjoyed the wind tremendously! This Hip Camp is definitely worth going to!

Stunning Views and Lots of Privacy
Beautiful spot with incredible views! The location is great as it is close to the Painted Hills and the little town of Mitchell, Oregon. We had no reception around the area but did once we reached the top of the mountain. The road was passable in our little Suburu and even for our friends in their Toyota Camry, but you want to make sure you feel comfortable driving on gravel/dirt roads in whatever it is you are driving. Definitely recommend and definitely planning to go back some day.

Great if you want to get away from people and have your own space with amazing views and an adventure getting there. Recommend 4 wheel drive vehicles only but will admit if you are experienced with off roading you probably can get there in a 2 wheel drive vehicle. We pulled a 24' travel trailer up and i don't think we could have done it without 4 wheel drive.

Just the thing we were looking for. Robert's property is private and has views in every direction. We enjoyed 3 days and 2 nights of solitude. We wish we could have stayed longer and would love to come back. Logistics : Robert gives perfect directions via phone so don't forget to call him. Road is well maintained, we had no issues. Bring everything you need, there's nothing around for a long ways. There are some cacti up there so keep that in mind if you have pets.

Quiet, steep, and an adventure!
Wow! What a find! This place has amazing views all around and it was so quiet you could hear your hesrtbeat! Make sure you have an SUV, truck or van to get here, the trail up is steep and rocky at some points. We got directions from Rob that were helpful, but one more tip is to look out for the green wooden circles or rocks along the way! Even though his directions were detailed I’m not sure we would have found it if it weren’t for noticing the green dot on the mailbox at the entrance. We did make a few wrong turns but keep your eyes peeled and keep climbing and you’ll get there. Totally worth it with the amazing view!

End of March stay
Exactly as others have described. You are on the top of a hill with tremendous views to the north and south. We visited towards the end of March which can be iffy weather-wise, but we were treated to a mixture of cloudy and sunny weather. Luckily why rain we saw was minor as I suspect the final 100 feet of road could become very muddy. We camped in the saddle between the two “summits” since Robert wanted us to use the steel wheel for our fire. The outhouses, while clever looking, are so close together that I don’t imagine two people using them at the same time. If they had backs in them, maybe. Robert’s directions were great and easy to follow. The road is steep, but we had no trouble in our Toyota Highlander towing a 900lb tent trailer (with high clearance). Other reviewers have mentioned clues and they are all still there. I never saw Robert or another sole on the property besides the occasional car on the road. One thing to note: There isn’t much cover up on the top, so be prepared for wind. I imagine it’s a beautiful place in the summer. Thanks for sharing Robert!

Fantastic place! Robert’s campground on the Bucking Horse Ranch is definitely worth it all! Beautiful views and private camping allowed for us to have a wonderful time. Robert greeted us and showed us where to camp, and even lit the campfire for us before he headed back down the mountain. And yes, it is a mountain, so be prepared to climb. The road is solid, a bit technical in places, but we drove our 2WD 2002 Eurovan up without issue. Thank you so much Robert, we’ve already talked about when we’d like to come back!

An adventure!
Great place to camp...hard to get to without 4 wheel drive. Road very steep, rutted and rocky in places. It was scary getting there with children in the car. I have a Rav4, 2wheel drive Sport and it took a beating.
