James landed on the property in 2009, built a small barn and milked 3 cows for 3 years. Since then; he has been learning construction trades, planting trees and gardening the hillsides. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters. Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months of saturdays for less than $5k. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours. Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. We love hosting and nearly everyone enjoys their stay.

Hilltop Cabin at Raven Ridge

99% (125)
Cabin · Sleeps 2
Hilltop cabin is open despite the are damage from Hurricane Helene. Come stay in our 320 sq. ft. two-floor cabin with excellent views of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mtns. The cabin is on the hilltop of a compact, abundantly gardened hill. We have berries, nut trees, and vegetables to pick in season. We also have started again with dairy cows in 2024 with 1 so far bottle calf. The cabin is directly adjacent to a cow pasture with even more excellent views of mountains. Only 25 minutes from Asheville and 7 minutes from Marshall, NC. Hilltop is far enough away to feel private yet near enough to our home and another nightly rental called ‘Orchard house’ to get the feeling of a quaint farmhouse hamlet. In the bigger neighborhood, you are invited to walk and explore the forest trails, roads and pastures We look forward to host you.

Orchard House

98% (124)
Cabin · Sleeps 3
Despite area damage by hurricane Helene, our property is fine and orchard house is open. This 450 square foot efficiency has an attached solar greenhouse. We built the place entirely ourselves over 2 years and furnished it with heirloom family furniture and art. Folks love it for the crafty homemade character and the botanical interest of the property plus the nearby trails and farm (there’s cows) Also we have close proximity to Asheville, Marshall, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail near Hot Springs In winter, spring, summer and fall, the orchard house is a prime location to get a feel for authentic mountain living and homesteading on the hills. Campers use a designated outhouse along a terraced garden. There is a private fire ring and we do have camp wood available in the trash shed. We also provide coffee, tea, spices, and cooking oil in a cozy downstairs kitchen. Upstairs has a claw foot tub and full size bed for two. Heating is by electric space heater, woodstove (wood provided for $3-$5) and on a sunny winter day, through the kitchen window into the attached passive solar greenhouse. For hot summer days, there is a window AC unit for cold air. Check in anytime from 3pM, check out is 11 AM. Let us know if you need to stay longer or come earlier and we will try to accommodate Whether you’re traveling on a work stopover, coming to see the mountains or for a private retreat, you will love the comfort and closeness of the orchard house. It’s perfect for writers, musicians and artists. We have lived on the property since 2009 and have hosted in our ‘hilltop cabin’ since 2017, also on hipcamp. The cabin has one full sized bed and twins for floor if you have more than two sleepers. We provide bedsheets. The couch can also accommodate 1 short sleeper. On the home hill, you get the feeling of comfortable closeness with our two guest houses and our big house on a triangle from each other. In the bigger neighborhood, you are invited to walk and explore the forest trails, roads and pastures. We look forward to host you.
