In 2000, David and Jeanette Kendall found a small abandoned high mountain apple orchard and meadows growing back to forest. After much hard work, they founded a small community, restored the farm, and built a small rustic lodge in the forest. There are many ways to enjoy your stay here at Green Heart Forest. You can walk in our meditation gardens; help with chores in our organic/permaculture gardens and orchards; gather fresh produce from them and cook healthy meals over your campfire. Or you can just relax and enjoy the wisdom of the forest. Perched along a ridge amongst large trees and a diverse understory, you'll have your own base camp for exploring and enjoying the great outdoors. Makes you feel like you could stay all summer long!

One of the best in the Blue Ridge
I’ve been up and down the Blue Ridge Mountains camping in 100s of sites from National Parks to Hipcamps and everything in between. This is going to be near the top of the list and I can’t recommend this place enough. The campsites themselves were beautiful, nestled on a ridge where you could see mountains through the trees, & very well spaced out with tons of places to put tents/hammocks. We loved having the big fire ring with a grate for cooking and the picnic tables were a great addition. It’s a lot like the campgrounds in some of the local national forests, except you have a shower and bathroom access when you need it! Not to mention the meditation gardens, well water (which was extremely good & clean water), and general beauty of this whole place which the owner has essentially built by hand. David was a pleasure to converse with, and he shared some really cool history about the area. He is someone that quickly got my trust/respect and I felt I could sit down and talk with him for days. The campsites are numbered in a way that the higher the number the further up the hill your campsite is, but it’s still no more than a 50 yard walk down to the lodge. We found plenty of dead wood laying around camp for fires, but my hand saw made everything easier. As others have said, Sunny(the dog) is a kleptomaniac an may sneak into your camp in the morning but as dog owners it did not bother us at all. Thankfully he gets bored quickly. Hike to Max Patch from camp! I’ll be coming back!

Cozy cabin in the woods surrounded by mountains. Very comfortable bed with a view of the sunrise. An outstanding host, David, made me welcome and showed me the vast land and farm that is part of his holdings nearby. Easy and beautiful walk to access Max Patch. The icing on the cake is the most loving black lab, Sunny. You can count on a cheerful greeting from him every day.

Great camping area! Nestled in Pisgah National Forest, you're able to take a trail that leads to Max Patch, like your own private pathway to the mountains. Friendly staff, including Owner David and his dog, Sunny. Please be cautious of your belongings if Sunny comes by to visit! He's very sweet. The foliage was beautiful both around the campsite and along the Forest. He's got all the basics you could possibly need, with also the ability to disconnect and tune-in with nature. Would definitely come back and camp here again during another season!

I loved tent camping here. Site 2 was just over the hill and private with a great forest view, perfect for one tent. I felt safe and comfortable here. I hope to go back!

Tin Roof Shelter 10x10
views, hikes, & a friendly dog!
We had an incredible weekend camping on David’s property! We stayed at the tin roof shelter, perfect spot for our tent with a great fire ring and picnic table. The other sites are spread out and not on top of eachother. We loved the easy access to the AT and max patch, had a great day hike! The bathroom & shower were clean and not a far walk from our tent. Camping here was a great way to spend time in nature with basic amenities still accessible. Most importantly- we loved our nightly dinner guest Sunny, David’s dog!

Great Week of Camping!
Beautiful Campground and surrounding area! We truly enjoyed our stay, and visit to Hot Springs. David was very nice and welcoming, and even let us borrow his wheelbarrow to get our firewood to camp. Very thankful for the super kind guests staying at the lodge who helped us get our gear to camp! Sonny is very sweet, and got along well with my dog ( who turned 11 on the trip). Sonny will steal things from your camp though so watch out. Would like to come back in spring to see the bird migration!

SO FUN
We had an excellent stay. The hike to Max Patch was wonderful, our Tin Roof site was perfect- all with a nice fire pit and covered area for our tent- and the camp doggo was so sweet! It was an easy walk to the lodge. We highly recommend this stay and will be back as soon as we can! Also to note, Verizon phone service was good at our site. Thank you David!

Camping in Green Heart Forest
David's property and house is very beautiful that boarders Pisgah National Forest. Has lovely trails that will take you to Max Patch that is also a very short drive. The space was quiet. Enjoyed getting away to a campsite where I can only hear the forest. Dave is a really cool guy and knowledgeable about the forest. David is nice and allows campers to use a bathroom and shower. Fire wood is plenty. I do not recommend moving firewood from place to place and appreciated using wood that was produced from the property. David's dog Sunny is sweet and enjoys a good rub and socks. Highly recommend this spot and will love to return in the future

Site 1: Our most remote/ site.
My wife and I had a great experience at David’s property! He and his 120lb adorable black lab met us at the lodge when we arrived, and we were talked through all the logistics of the land. We stayed at site 1 which was very private and had its own fire pit, picnic table, and log stumps to sit on. The ground was tightly packed sand, so definitely bring some extra cush for your sleeping arrangements. David gave us access to his lodge for toilet/shower/sink use from 8a-8p, and a porta potty otherwise which is very generous of him. He’s got chopped wood for sale so we didn’t have to bring any or cut our own. David was attentive to our needs and made us feel right at home. He even has fresh well water at your convenience! We had the greatest time hiking to Max Patch and exploring the area. The trails are marked with green hearts so you never feel lost. The only thing that occurred that we didn’t expect was the noise at the campsite. We heard a few planes over head in the middle of the night which made the wildlife antsy and pretty vocal most of the night. Sonny the puppy is a sweet addition to the property, but be cautious if your own dog isn’t fond of other dogs. Sonny is friendly and isn’t afraid to approach you or your dog which might lead to nervousness. Overall, we had a wonderful time and carry lots of new memories with us!

Poor Host Communication
I can’t speak to the actual camping spot - it rained over the weekend so our plans were cancelled. Booking however was confusing. The information was not clear and a friend who has camped here a few times explained that I overpaid $60. I emailed and asked for a $60 refund but never even heard back from the host. Because of that I will not book here again.

Campsite with trails to Max Patch
You can hike to Max Patch from the site. It was 4 miles round trip per our Garmin watch and we did it with an 8 and 4 year old (who were pretty exhausted but did it!) It was the most beautiful mainland hike I have ever done and I have been to many beautiful places. It can be easy to get lost so make sure to ask for specifics before you go from the host. The site itself was nice and is the only site you can park your vehicle at. Considering our gear, this is a must for us! The lodge is a small hike from the site but an interesting one and the lodge is equipped with a very nice clean bathroom and shower. I will say this is not a spot to camp if you are afraid or annoyed by dogs. We were greeted by a giant dog that jumped into the truck as my husband was opening the door and he went straight to the back seat to lick my kids faces. We happen to love dogs but were startled enough to jump out of the truck so fast and my kids were freaked out. This is apparently routine for the dog and he happened on our campsite often and stole a hotdog quite literally from my kids mouth. Otherwise, it was very relaxing and quite nice.

Camping at David’s property was an absolutely amazing experience. David is an incredibly gracious host opening his land and providing us with what we needed such as directions, clean water, and a running shower. He explained his land to us, which was incredibly well maintained featuring plots for tent camping, a zen garden, and well maintained hiking trails leading to Max Patch. I will absolutely be returning to this site the next time that I want to visit the area.

Dog Friendly, Great Location
Beautiful campsite in a great location! Super close to Max Patch. David was very nice and helpful and the facilities on site were great. Our dog Margot especially loved the visits from David's dog Sunny, a verrry friendly 120 lb Black Lab. He did try to eat our campsite information packet and our paper towels, so maybe keep paper products away from him.

Exactly as advertised; beautiful property within walking distance of the AT. Awesome, personable host, and a 25 minute drive into town with access to the hot springs and brewery. A huge bonus was the sweet dog Sunny who came and visited with us the first night. We had a wonderful time.

Incredible! Greenheart is perfect.
Greenheart was wonderful. David was a great host. The property was beautiful and it was so nice that it backs up to Max Patch. We were at site 4. Nice to have the car right beside our site. It wasn’t the most private site but we had plenty of room and everyone we met was wonderful. The well water was incredible and cool and easy to access. The firewood was great and so nice to have nearby. The lodge was BEAUTIFUL and it was really nice to have access to a bathroom and shower. Will absolutely be returning.

Ideal location for Max Patch Lovers
David's place is a tranquil piece of property that connects by trail to Max Patch. The trails and camping areas are well maintained and clean. The only downside to this campsite is that the porta jon is further than ideal from the tent sites. But, if you don't mind a little hike, it's worth it for Greenheart's peace and quiet. My friend, myself, and our dog had a wonderful weekend and Greenheart provided the perfect place to for our "staycation."

The short 45-50 minute hike to the top of the meadows is 100% worth it. Beautiful views all around. The campground itself is rather easily accessible from the lodge. It can be tricky to find the campground because of a very small sign at the road, but once you find it it's very easy after that.
