Welcome to Brightwood Homestead! This 4-acre property was acquired as raw land in 2020. Since then, we've organically built a place where autonomy and action meet. This little piece of paradise in Durham county is the base of operations for our non-profit organization. My partner, my newborn son, and our host of pets and livestock call this fledgling farm home! This property serves as a "living classroom," where I empower, encourage, and equip underserved people of color with the skills necessary to live holistic, self-sustainable lives. Our priority is food/occupational security and environmental awareness. Come and share our space for camping, a weekend getaway, a homestead experience, or a safe place to park during your travels. I spend the majority of my time working the land, occasionally visiting the office or schools. I'm available to help you settle in or point you in the direction of whatever you're looking for in Durham! Our homestead's amenities include: Reliable solar and grid power, filtered running well water. Clean, fully enclosed, and ventilated outhouse with running water and a flushing toilet. Private, spacious, and HEATED bathhouse with a waterfall shower. 800 sq. ft. screened-in Army tent doubling as a lounge and workspace equipped with a library, desk, comfy seating, and even a full-sized pool table! Large common area with a fire pit, 10ft grill/smoker, and picnic area. We are 15 minutes from bustling downtown Durham, grocery stores, and shopping. 20 minutes from the state park, Falls Lake, and the Eno River. Just off two major highways. Breakfast, lesson/experience, and volunteer packages available! Pet and child-friendly!

A Wonderful Place
Staying here changed my life. I’ve been reflecting on my experience for two weeks, telling my friends about this place, planning my return, etc. Skip is a genuine, insightful, kindred soul and he was incredibly accommodating (I arrived after 10pm and he still made time to help me get settled and talk with me), open (he showed me everything on the homestead and talked with me at great length, answering my questions and sharing his experiences with me), and thoughtful (the homestead is designed with care and the access to amenities is perfect). The land is beautiful! The space is safe and welcoming, and as a black woman traveling solo, this was crucial for me. I left feeling inspired and re-energized. So glad to have found this place and to have made a new friend in Skip.

Fletcher’s Lot
We got in late (9:30 PM) and Skip came and met us at the main road directing us with a flashlight. He was very kind and offered to help us out by providing light for setup (which we politely declined). His campsite is nice and quiet and set back far enough from the road that you feel safe and secluded!

Hilltop Site
This was a great spot close to the city. We spent one night - my partner and I basically used this location as an alternative to an Airbnb or hotel because the weather was nice and we wanted to break out our camping stuff at least once this season. Due to our short utilitarian stay we didn’t use all the amenities available to us, but Skip was a very welcoming and helpful host upon our arrival, and we appreciated a short tour of the property. The dogs barked at us but were not threatening. Kudzu rhizomes were prevalent but didn’t bother us from beneath our sleeping pads.
