You will come here to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of `Black Mountain'. `Black Mountain’ is on Gumbainggir country. It is a registered conservation property bordering Nymboida River and Nymboi-Binderay National Park. Alastair and I have shared the property for more than 25 years and consider ourselves custodians of this precious place. Visitors enjoy: the pristine river; walking tracks through diverse terrain; starry night skies and campfires. Previous guests recommend staying at least two nights to soak up the atmosphere and explore the area. Choose from the 'Ant Shack' or four adjacent campsites with easy access and views to the Nymboida River. Shared facilities include a hot shower and composting toilets. You can walk, swim and kayak, explore the area or just relax for days. We can’t accommodate domestic animals or allow fishing, not even catch and release because we protect our wildlife and the endangered Eastern Cod. Black Mountain is remote but just 60 kilometres from Grafton or Coffs (via back way). 2WD access to our house is from Nymboida only. 4WD/AWD from Lowanna or Glenreagh and 4WD/AWD down to the river/campsite area - Not suitable for caravans. All proceeds from Airbnb and Hipcamp are invested in the continuing conservation of Black Mountain.

Black Mountain 4WD- Drongo Dell
Black Mountain camping is great for an off-grid nature experience with the luxury of sparkling amenities. We loved that the Drongo Dell site was so close to the river with easy access to toilet. The walking trails through rain forest are a highlight, as is the abundance of wildlife. Merryl and Alistair are welcoming and very helpful. They take great care of the flora & fauna, and us humans too.

Black Mountain 4WD - The Ant Shack
What absolutely amazing place to stay. It was so peaceful everything was so well presented and maintained. You must like isolation as there is no phone service. Merryl the host was wonderful so helpful from when we made our booking and even allowed us to check in early. I would recommend the ant shack to anyone who loves getting away from civilisation. Everything was supplied except food, clean tidy.

Switch off in the bush
The Ant Shack was a fantastic experience. It is a very well equipped 2 room shack, and a good set-up for a couple or a family to stay with everything you need including linen and towels. It is nestled in the bush on a beautiful and remote property with the Nymboida River flowing past just down the hill. Toilets and a hot shower are just up the hill. Merryl and Alistair are excellent hosts and we enjoyed chatting with them about their property and all the work they have done on it. Floating in the river on tubes at dusk was just perfect.

Slice of untouched nature
The ant shack was stunning. It overlooks beautiful country and the River. We were met by merryl who guided us to the cabin. They have thought of everything from newspapers and firewwod for the campfire, solar energy to run a fridge and fan, and even an array of camplights, mosquito coils and repellent. All the utensils are available you literally just turn up and relax. Merryls commitment to conservation and ensuring the environment is preserved is a much appreciated value and our time spent at the cabin reflected her hard work.

Remoteness at its Best
If you are looking for a place that is remote this is the place for you. We so enjoyed staying in The Ant 🐜 Shack. The bed was so comfortable and it had everything we needed. Waking up to nature at its best with the Nymboida river not that far from you and the singing of the birds in the morning. In the evenings enjoying the open fire place and looking up at the stars ✨ it truly is a place to unwind. We took our kayak up stream and enjoyed some challenging but fun times on the Nymboida River. Merryl really has a special place - please be mindful that you are out in nature and there is native wildlife that you need to respect as we are the visitors. We hope to go again - 💕

Black Mountain 4WD- Drongo Dell
From driving through the trees and up to trail, to reaching different mountains, to being greeted at the front gate and escorted to my campsite by lovely property owners. It was one of my favourite camping trips ever. Surrounded by The River which goes upstream all night, it’s the most peaceful sound to sleep to. Such a remote place to do your thinking, carving wood out of a variety of timber, reading a book and doing some cooking, something you can enjoy with the family and kids, friends or even just on your own. Amenities were great, beautiful shower room and compost toilet was very clean. I would 100% stay here again. Don’t second think coming here! Just do it!

Great place to unwind for a weekend
Great place to stay, was far better than expected. Toilet and shower were clean and well maintained considering the off grid location. Camp site was flat with some grass, ground was extremely hard and difficulty to put in pegs but otherwise amazing.

We had such an amazing time at Black Mountain, views were just beautiful and the campsite was great. Merryl is absolutely lovely, we had an issue with some stolen gear prior to our trip and she went above and beyond to help us out and make our stay as comfortable as possible. Wow. How special.
What a special hide-away this is! Thank you to Merryl and Alastair for their gracious and warm hospitality, which knows no bounds. They took very special consideration of us; we who decided to come and camp during the most atrocious weather. This is an extra-special gem of a camping spot, made even more amazing through the unwavering conservation efforts of these two, very big-hearted people. What they have created and continued to take care of, is something very unique and beautiful. Extra mentions to Alastair's nifty and creative little additions around the property, and to their care and cultivation of wonderful hiking trails. We cannot wait to visit you again. X

Pristine location with great hosts
Wonderful location with wonderful hosts. Merryl & Alastair couldn’t have been more welcoming or helpful during our visit. We had a problem with a slow leaking valve on one of our tyres when we got there and Alastair got stuck straight in to changing the tyre in the mud as I had some difficulty getting the jack in place with my bad knees. Merryl kept us hydrated with refreshments throughout. The weather wasn’t kind while we were there and our hosts went above & beyond the call of duty in making us as comfortable as possible. The location & property itself is stunning & great amenities as well. Throughly recommended for the 4X4 enthusiast looking for something out of the ordinary.

Black Mountain 4WD - The Ant Shack
Wonderful experience staying at the magical Ant Shack on the equally magical Nymboida river. Getting there is half the fun, its a navigation exercise through fire tracks and densely populated forests. Take it slow and trust your instruments, it's worth the journey when you find it. Warm welcome on arrival, made to feel right at home from the minute we arrived. The access road down to the campground is a bit of a challenge for our car, so Merryl and Alistair went out of their way to solve that issue for us. Most appreciated. Down to the campground - magic and enthralling. Everything needed for a safe and comfortable stay has been well thought out and well executed. The shower facilities are first class, with super strong water pressure due to the excellent layout. Well defined campfire area with ample firewood. Multilple fresh water taps spread around the various sites too. The shack itself is well made and beautiful. Could easily stay there for months :) The kitchen is fully stocked, as is the camp cooking supply box outside the hut. Beds are big and comfortable, and with the doors and windows open, it's like sleeping in luxury amongst the trees. And then there is the breathtaking river ... see photos. There is a kayak under the hut that you are free to use if you want to go for a paddle up the river too. In addition, there are several level camping sites artfully placed around the area. You could easily accommodate larger groups of tents with good levels of privacy, access to facilities, and fire safety. Loved it, will be back as often as we can.

Black Mountain is a fantastic place to stay. The river is terrific to swim in and the amenities are second to none. Alistair was a wonderful host - nothing was too much trouble. He towed our trailer to the campsite, charged our battery and made us feel exceptionally welcome. A great place to stay
