Extraordinary Camping Experience

Sugar Hill Woodworks Campsite
Four-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever, Molly, and I camped for four nights in our travel trailer on Kevin's, Shawn's, and Elsa's property. Elsa is a very friendly eight month old herding "sheep dog" puppy who showed Molly hours of off-leash joy around the campsite and property.
The camp site is behind Kevin's and Shawn's home on a beautiful mountain overlooking the Mescalero Apache Reservation. The site has stunning mountain views with a nice view of a "tree framed" historic mission church across the valley. The sitting area that I set up outside the camper's door was peaceful, comfortable, and saturated with nature -- such as dense pine forests and "bugling" elk. The property also has very nice spacious "park-like" walking areas and trails that Kevin and friends made and maintain for hiking and mountain biking.
Kevin and Shawn are the most hospitable, helpful, and gracious people that I have experienced in many years. They willingly shared their knowledge of the historic area with me. They even invited me to a family cookout around a campfire the night of Labor Day. The food, fellowship, and setting were spectacular.

This was a return visit and even more interesting than the first. I brought my son and his mountain bike. Kevin took him on one of the many trails which he created and keeps nicely groomed.
The most special part was being Kevinās guests at an Apache ceremonial feast.
As before the view from the campsite was lovely and private.
Will return again!

We had a wonderful stay! Kevin was incredibly hospitable. We arrived later than planned, and he still took the time to greet us and chat with us when we got in, which made us feel so welcome right away. We set up camp at night so in the morning we were amazed by the beauty AND the dozen or so elk roaming the property in the morning.
On top of that, when our car wouldnāt start the next day, he went above and beyond by turning around on his way to work to come back and help jump it. Truly such a kind and generous person. Weāre so grateful for his help and for the wonderful stay. Highly recommend booking here- youāll be well taken care of.

Kevin greeted us upon our arrival. His mother and a friend wanted to meet the campers as well. The camping space was as advertised and we had no issues. Perfect place to spend the night. We learned a lot about life on the reservation which was great insight. Meeting people is one of our favorite things to do while traveling. I think we have a new freind. FYI I usually donāt leave reviews unless something special occurs.

Kevinās site in Mescalero NM was really special. There was a little more ambient noise than I expected, wafting up from the village and roads. But the noise died down and the skies were starry (no light pollution). The campsite was level with a good view and a decent firepit (BYO wood).
It was easy to make a day trip into Cloudcroft for lunch and rock hounding, followed by an afternoon of hiking.
I would agree with other campers that the thing that stood out was the generosity of Kevin and his wife Shawn (not sure of the spelling). I was solo camping and they invited me and my dog into their home for morning coffee. They had lots of suggestions and also gave me a glimpse into Apache life.

What a neat experience! The property is a perfect location for a view of some beautiful mountains! Kevin & his family is beyond welcoming. We actually booked the night before their wedding & they STILL HOSTED us with open arms! The entire family was around & friends for the big day they accepted us like family & took my kids all over to play & ride his incredible mountain bike trials. This is one of those camps that make Hipcamp worth everything because itās more then a place to stay itās an experience.

Peaceful with easy access to Ruidoso and not too far from Cloudcroft. Felt private despite the road and neighbors not far away. Very faint road noise in the distance, was not noticeable. kevin was very kind and showed us a trail behind his house and was able to run an extension cord out to our trailer. Would stay again.

Sugar Hill was just wonderful! Kevin's property was perfect for my dogs and I - quiet, in the woods, lots of trails that have been maintained by Kevin, so nice. Kevin was an amazing host - he was there when I arrived and got us settled in, later he guided us on a hike through his land. I couldn't have asked for a better experience!

Kevin is a super friendly host. The site near his house is a beautiful spot and there is water and electricity available. We really enjoyed talking with Kevin about the area and his experiences there. He also showed us some trails we could hike right by his house.

Kevin's places was a perfect quiet, safe place to camp for the night. Also, Kevin is so welcoming and easy to chat with. I got to meet some of his friends and family, see some of his gorgeous wood working, and I wandered a little ways down a hiking trail he is working on creating. Perfect place for car camping, camper vans, and tent camping - complete with a fire pit. Kevin also offered to run a power cord out if needed, or move a pic nic table. He really is a fantastic host.

We loved camping at Kevinās in our motor home. The views of the forested mountains are great and the walking trails on the land were beautiful. We didnāt see any elk but saw much evidence of their usual presence on the property. The campsites are close to the house but feel private. Kevin was a great host, inviting us into his home and sharing the history of the land and of the Mescaleros. He was open, friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend this site!

We absolutely loved camping at sugarhill woodwork! We were apprehensive at first, especially since our stay was on Christmas Eve, but Kevin made it a stay to remember. He was incredibly hospitable, and we loved talking to him. He was an incredible host and would recommend to anyone that it is worth it 10x to stay at sugarhill woodwork. Be aware, this is not your typical campground. This is land that is owned by the host that he has offered as a camp spot.

So many wonderful things itās hard to pick just one. The host Kevin was great at welcoming me, the site is absolutely fantastic. Easy directions and safe. Walking trails and beauty all around. I was greeted by sounds of the elk nearby.
Having coffee and real authentic conversation with Kevin and Shawn about the tribal community and culture was my favorite.
āEarsā his dog kept me company as I watched the stars from the onsite hammock. ššš
Oh and wood work is beautiful.

I didnāt know what to expect as a first timer for Hipcamp but staying at Sugarhill Woodworks was great! My big dog was thrilled to be off leash like normal for us and meet Kevinās very nice german shepherd. The camp spot was level and had an outstanding view. While setting up in the evening a bull elk walked through! This marked the end of my dog off leash just in case but was super neat. Elk bugled all around through the evening and into the morning (because itās fall). It was a short drive to go disc golfing in Ruidoso or golfing and visiting family in Alamogordo. It worked out perfect!

Enjoyed my camping at Sugarhill. Kevin was a great host. I rode some of the NMBDR on my T7 during my stay. The campsite was very peaceful but also close proximity to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. Will be coming back to Sugarhill next time I'm in the area.

Sugar Hill was my second Hip Camp and experience. Kevin was an excellent host and made sure I was safe and comfortable. His land IS as peaceful as his description. I enjoyed our insightful conversations when we had those welcomed opportunities. His pup, Ears, is so adorable and loving. I felt very comfortable and blessed.
