Nestled in the picturesque Scott Able Canyon of the Sacramento Mountains in Southeastern New Mexico, Southern Rockies Camp and Retreat Center stands out as a unique destination for individuals and groups of all ages. This serene campground offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and a welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal setting for learning, relaxation, and recreation. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, visitors can immerse themselves in outdoor activities, explore nearby hiking trails, and enjoy the tranquility of nature. The camp's history dates back to 1948 when a dedicated committee of County Extension Agents and 4H State Leaders sought the perfect location for a camp site. They prioritized essential features such as ample water supply, a level play area, and accessibility. After thorough exploration and collaboration with the Forest Service, Scott Able Canyon was chosen for its abundant safe drinking water, thanks to a free-flowing spring that has served the camp well over the years. Fundraising efforts began in April 1949, and by June 2, enough funds were raised to start construction, led by Mr. Ray Matterson of Alamogordo. The community rallied together through various events like pie suppers, carnivals, and dances, with the New Mexico Co-op Improvement Association making the largest single contribution of $1,000.
